  1. I hunt in Friendship NY. I've seen plenty of big bucks. The problem is they have so much more cover to hide in then up by the lake. Hilton/Hamlin/Kendall/Ogden/Brockport.....it's nothing but fields and funnels. So it's much easier to track down a big buck when he has only a few spots to hide. Take a look at the topographical maps of the lake vs the southern tier. I have a very hard time getting a mature buck on trail camera in friendship, But once the rut comes they all come out to play. Hunting them mountain bucks is fun!!! But they taste like **** compared to deer that i harvest closer to the lake. My thought it because of the food sources they have access too. Good luck hunting this year
  2. Bow hunters will understand this....How many hunters have seen the biggest buck of a lifetime at 50+ yards during bow season. Only to watch him walk away for another day because he was just a little to far away, had it been GUN season i'd have A LOT of giants on my wall. NYS needs to have more restrictions on ANTLERS, this is a half ass step in the right direction. They need to let the hunters make the laws and not the idiots in Albany. Muzzeloader season is a shame to lose because i know of several hunters who have taken the biggest bucks of a lifetime in those last few days...but anything to help save some little bucks is worth it. Last year i sat at hunting camp and saw on facebook all these hunters holding up tiny little 2-1/2 to 3-1/2" 8 points, acting like they made some giant kill, When i passed up several 3-1/2" yr old bucks last year because of the TRUE bruisers i was actually hunting. If all the hunters in NYS passed up the standard 8 points and let the bucks grow we could have a state like OHIO/ILLINOIS....etc. But people think a 120 class buck is a "Trophy of a lifetime" when it's a young buck with potential. I've talked with several true BIG BUCK hunters and they all tell me the same thing. Let a buck walk because next year he will be even bigger, And if you hunt and manage property in only a few short years you go from 4 and 6 points to 8 and 10 points with mass. But the biggest thing in hunting is this, Make sure you have fun and take a kid or new hunter hunting and fishing and teach them ethics and good management and maybe 10 years from now people will talk about BIG NYS bucks. Do i fully agree with the new laws...NO, But i hope it's a step in the right direction. Good luck this year to everyone
  3. Did you cut it open....i wonder what it had eaten...baby duck or a big frog.
  4. Nice Report Dave......Team work was the biggest part of this victory....Even when we had to hand line in a 22lb king...Fishing is all about making memories you can share for a life time. Good fishing and a memory i'll never forget. Watching that steelie jump was worth waking up at 3:15am. Or not sleeping at all for sum people. ha
  5. Perch......My only tactic for perch is to fish bigger minnows. Use bass minnows or BIG perch minnows for bait. Walleye.....Fish at night....or troll deep diving stick baits after sun up....and before sun down. Good luck !!!!
  6. wait for the ice to go out. Go back to work, Save the PTO day. for turkey season or ice out.
  7. Cows and other animals are starting to have babies.....use baby animal noises along with coyote vocalizations. Starting tonight i plan on hunting hard for the last part of the season
  8. Personally...ice fishing on IBAY is a waste of time. spend the time and money to drive to sodus or a fingerlakes.
  9. I was on conesus this weekend and watched and have video of the 1st and 2nd place fish getting catch then brought to weigh in. It's a shame that pike have to die in a tournament. But unfortunately it's probably the only real way to prove someone wins that tourney. Since honest is hard to come by in this day in age. And only 1 Tiger was caught in a 2 day tourney....which suck, But it all boils down to catch and release. If all fisherman practices catch and release through out the year, then Tournaments could afford to kill a few fish. Personally i would throw back any pike i ever catch, except on a rare occasion when i'm hungry for some fresh fish and the perch aren't biting. The DEC needs to step in and put a slot limit on northerns or just have a 5 to 10 year ban on keeping northerns. I loved fishing for northerns in Irondequoit bay as a kid. Would easily catch 5 to 10 fish a day. Now.....maybe 1 or 2 a season. Don't even bother putting the boat in the water if you are looking for Northerns in Irondequoit bay, just my opinion. Good luck fishing to everyone

  12. panfisher, I got mine in early spring right after the ice went out. 6lb test on a perch minnow. Just a big female who was spawning and got hungry. I was looking for perch after the ice went out......got lucky.

  14. Rochester NY. But heading to sodus this weekend. So i'll try bay bridge. thanks Prays Mate. And i'm ordering a set of Fish 307 now So i have a new set and a back up set. thanks guys.

  16. Please share pics and stories from this weekend. I was apart of a team that had a lot of fun and missed opportunities. We hunted from Dusk til 930 am on friday night into saturday..No sleep. Then got a quick nap in and headed back out around 4pm and hunted until 3am but the wind was so strong we headed home for another 2 hours of sleep. And started up again at 7am. Overall it was a blast. Missed a fox on our second set of the hunt..Snuck in on us from behind. Then missed another dog at about 200 yards around 1145pm. Finally got a great shot on my fox at 540am saturday. We had lots of action all weekend and learn a lot from our mistakes. I look forward to this hunt every year, love to hear more stories. We put on about 275 miles on my truck and walked well over 20 miles in the time we hunted. Good luck to all hunters and stay safe this year! -Tim
  17. Barrington Trapper...Nussiance permits are the problem with this state. Some farmers shoot 50 or more deer in 1 year...then people **** because they don't see deer. This state is nuts to not to have an antler restriction. Everyone shoots tiny little bucks and then complain because they don't see big bucks. Instead of Nussiance permits they should just issue hunters more tags for does. Let the little bucks live and then we can have a state like Illinois or Ohio. An average buck in this state is 1-1/2 years old.....which is ridiculous. They need restrictions on all bucks, Button bucks included. We need more big buck hunters in this state....It would change the deer population so much and more people would see deer and enjoy the time in the woods. Instead of everyone shooting the first little brown deer that walks by...for 20lbs of finished meat.
  18. anybody ever hear of using ferrets? Old timer i know said his dad, back in the depression used a ferret to hunt rabbits. Sometimes the ferret would stay in the hole and eat the rabbit so he left his hat at the base of the hole and would come back later on and find the little guy sleeping in his hat. Cool story about the YOTES though!!!
  19. Feb 28th...but tickets are limited. But i got mine already. Good luck everyone!
  20. Has anyone heard any news on the squirrel slam this year? went out the other day with the 12ga and knocked down a few tree rats, Ready for a fun day of squirrel slams!
  21. looks like Fun!!! Good job. Kill the yotes!!!
  22. tractor supply sells live traps
  23. community scrap. I've seen active scraps in april, scouting for turkeys. Does, fawns, bucks. They will all visit a scrap just to see who is in the area. I found one last year in September, that was the size of a car hood. camera showed several different does and bucks visiting thought the season, but not much action during the rut. Gotta love chasing whitetails!
