  1. I'm going to hold you responsible if we don't crush it in the morning after making this call! =0)
  2. Im assuming that the issue is getting wrapped around stuff and chewing up your line and not "snapping the line" due to "horsing" them in.
  3. I am going to try some other jigging type lures that I have from my west coast saltwater days. A couple of them are similar to a heavy rattle traps where the line connects in the middle of the lure and they have two treble hooks. (mirrolure mullet????) I think you are much more likely to stick one on the fall with something like this than a typical spoon that rocks back and forth on the fall (with the hook in a bad position 50% of the time) I will report back if I have any luck.
  4. As a light line purist, I cringe a bit at the thought of using heavier line than absolutely necessary but you have me thinking. I'll be out in the morning with someone that is more inexperienced than I normally fish with and I have 15# on a few rigs. Probably a good idea to swap out some leaders this evening..... Leaders on F/F shouldnt matter much anyways but 50# flouro is getting pretty stiff. Wonder if flouro even matters. A bit of stretch with mono isnt a bad thing with newbies behind the reel.
  5. Pretty sure I have lost a fish or two because of this but never bothered getting out the epoxy. Now that Im reading this, there really isnt a reason not to do this. I can probably do the majority of the rigs in my "go box" in just a few minutes...... Not sure how I feel about those FishUSA hooks. Seems like overkill to the point that it takes away some of the gap of the hook.....
  6. I can't seem to get mine calibrated very well but its reasonably close. No reason not to try and get it as close as you can even if its really just for a reference. Interested to see what others have to say about this. I fiddled with mine for a long time and couldnt get it as close as i would have wanted to. If there is a trick, Im all ears......
  7. Excited to give it a go this weekend! Thanks for the intel. This lit a fire under my butt to focus on jigging! These things are a riot on light gear if you can get it done!
  8. This is awesome! I got one jigging early in the season and cant wait to give it another shot. Unfortunately life and lousy weather every time I can get out has gotten in the way of getting after it. Was there any particular technique that you think worked the best? Were they, primarily hitting, it on the fall? FOW? Thank you! With a little luck I hope to get out there next Sunday and will be bringing the jigging rods. (Sandy)
  9. Having a fishhawk helps build intuition about speeds very quickly. Once you have some intuition, it isnt that hard to tell whether you are going too fast or to slow MOST of the time. Id say 80% of the time my GPS speed is between 2.2 and 2.7mph this time of year and I am pretty confident that my gear is running right. I set gear at 2.5. My fish hawk isnt calibrated perfectly but it is a good baseline. Where a fishhawk really shines when you are fishing with or against a stiff current. There have been a few times I have been out there and it amazes me how big of a difference there is between GPS and down speed. That said, your divers will also tell you if you are off quite a bit. Fishhawk gives you better information but you can certainly catch fish without one. I think its also worth nothing that boat and speed control are a big part of this as well. I would rather go without my fish hawk than the throttle control on my kicker.
  10. "Sams Pro" releases were designed for braid and work well once you get the hang of using them. They are directional and the way you wrap the line does matter. This is worth it for me as I dont want any extra line connections if i can avoid it. I run braid backer on everything so these are a good choice for me.
  11. I'd love the opportunity at some bigger fish. A 15#er on 20#+ gear really isnt much of a match. That said, Im not sure Id trade the current state of things at a chance at some big uns. Last couple of times I have been out this year we caught a lot of nice fish and didnt have to work very hard for them. We didnt do nearly as well "back in the day" but my electronics, gear and knowledge is way ahead of what we had back then. What we really need is lots of really big fish! Really like the idea of putting a few 50#ers out there. Sure be a good excuse when something goes wrong!
  12. I think this is wishful thinking. Looks like most of the taxes arent really specific to a "road tax" although most of the revenue is used for highways and bridges etc. One could argue that your boat on a trailer uses the road but what about my mower? She uses a lot of fuel and doesn't use the road at all. =0)
  13. Another slide diver guy here. I have been running 35 foot of 40# mono as well to a 6 foot section of flouro. I ran 30# mono for a bit but felt I was replacing it too often. Ive been running black slide divers with the clear mag ring (no mag weight) Works well for me.
  14. Lots of good info on this thread and LOTS of people on here that are willing to help. Next time you go out, share some details (in a new thread) of what you used, how you did etc. The more details the better. This is very technical fishing and there is a learning curve. For me, confidence was a big one my first couple of seasons. I changed things up a lot and tended to overthink things. I now have a pretty good bag of tricks that I am confident in. If you are running 12 foot dipsey leads that should be fine.
  15. Some good advice above. I second the salmon school. Ive done the last two and picked up some good info each time. How long are your leaders on your dipseys? I ran 6 foot leads for a season and they didnt catch fish for me. I switched to very long leaders and it has made a world of difference.
  16. I have two cheap lithium batteries and one charges "weird" sometimes. It charges faster than it should every once in awhile. Really not sure if it is the charger or battery. If I unplug it for an hour and plug it back in it charges normally. This caused significantly lower run time until i figured it out. When I was troubleshooting the issue, I picked up two cheap LCD voltage displays from amazon so I could see the voltage when charging and using them. They use hardly any power. May be worth picking some up so you can monitor voltage on the water. Like it was mentioned above, if one battery has more capacity then the other, the lower one will die real quick.
  17. I hope they throw the book at this guy. Cant fathom the reasoning behind wanting to do something like this.....
  18. I use an app called Windfinder. It has some cool features but like anything else out there is giving you an estimate for future dates/times. I have found it to be pretty good at giving me an idea of what's going to happen throughout the day. Interested in what other folks have to say on this.
  19. Standard rings with a twilly tip will work fine. I would be concerned that a shorter rod doesnt have enough forgiveness for a diver especially a large one. Big advantage in running a longer leader with a longer rod as well as working fish around riggers, outboards etc. A short one will work fine I'm sure but most of the rods specifically designed for wire divers are 9 or better. I think all of mine are 10 footers. Most of my shorter freshwater rods designed for trolling dont have near enough backbone for a diver. If you have some heavier ones they should work fine. If you arent sure, run your TDR. At least if something goes wrong you arent out an expensive rod.
  20. Airmar P66 is not listed as compatible on Garmins site but works fine (you just need to set it up manually) I believe that has the widest cone out there. Looks like it may be similar to the B117 you listed but its not very expensive if you didnt need a through hull. I love mine and am using it with an adapter cable with a 93sv along with a gt54 for HD and side imaging.
  21. I can see someone running out of fuel due to a faulty gas gauge. My gas gauge is pretty sketchy. It tells me weather Im full or not full. In between that it kinda works if I slosh fuel around but i do not trust it at all. While I agree you shouldnt be out on the lake not knowing your fuel level, its a mistake many smart people have made. (for the record I have not) =0)
  22. I had the same issue the first time i fired it up this season. I had spider webs/eggs? in the hole. Ill be putting blue painters tape over the hole when I store it next season. Weed eater line is a good idea.
  23. I run 32# copper on Daiwa 57Lc3bs which is pretty much the same size. Like it was mentioned above, you can get over 200 yards of cheap 50# braid and 300 ft of 32# copper on there. You can probably get close to 300 yards of backer if you went down to 40# and ran a thinner braid like power pro. When I dont know the exact capacity, I fill one reel the hard way putting the copper on first and then filling up with braid to just over 100% and then taking it off, transferring it to another spool with a drill and winding it back on braid first. I use a clamp on line counter when the braid goes on so I have a reference for future reels. This is not fun but I really dont like reels that arent full nor do I like running 286 feet of copper because I put too much backer on.
  24. Mentioning a warm or cold weather oil seems strange to me. Almost every modern engine uses multiweight oil which I would think just about any common flavor should do fine in 35 degree weather. Wonder if your oil pressure sensor is just a bit sensitive....
  25. If you got a bunch of water in there and think the thermostat will take care of the problem, it would be a good idea to do a second oil change after one trip to make sure you get it all out. Personally, I would do a third after another couple more trips just to check it. You could also change it, get it up to temp and run for a bit on muffs or barrel and then change again right after. No reason not to run cheap dino oil for this purpose.
