I want to purchase dipsy rods + reels for my Dad

Hi all,

I'm looking to buy some wire rod + reel setups for my dad for Father's Day. I'm in college...what is the best way to get some nice rods and reels for a decent price? Last time my brother bought a setup, it snapped off the rod holder and fell in the water, $300 gone.

We only use 2 downriggers in a small 16' boat but I want to take the next steps and get wires out there.

Which rods/reels do you use, where can I buy them, and how much will they be?

Not sure how much you are looking to spend but I run the shimano tekota 600 with a line counter. They run around $185 but work great. As far as a pole just about any dipsy pole that is 9' will work. I would recommend probably a medium heavy action rod.

We use Ugly Stick 10' dipsy  rods with Diawa SG47LCA reels filled with Torpedo 19 strand wire and could not be more satisfied.

Okuma classic pro GLT dipsy rod for $35-$40. Okuma Magdalena pro reel for about $60. Twili tip for $7. Awesome setup. Sometimes you can find this exact setup pre spooled with 1000ft of 30lb 7 strand wire for $149 at gander mountain or dicks. Super good deal.

I like simple Penn 209 level winds. They are bomb-proof with smooth drags and easy to maintain. Set the dipsys on 3 and let out as much line as you would tolerate reeling back in!
