3/15 Brownie Fun
Yankee Troller replied to Yankee Troller's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
It was a blast to get out and definately a blast to catch 'em on bass gear. I was using a 6' baitcasting rod with a 100 series curado. I use these rods for jerkbaits and top water plugs when bass fishing. One lure caught them all! I took a white x-rap color code GGH and hand painted the entire back with a yellow sharpie. This used to be a buddies favorite color on a chug bug, and it was a special salt water run color. So I hand painted a fex x-raps this color last spring. We tried other colors like black and silver and orange and gold, but no takers. The retrieve must have been key too since my buddy wasn getting any hits. I would crank the reel a few turns and let it sit. All the fish hit on the pause. -
Went to fish for smallmouth ended up smokin the perch. Not real good size but enough to have some fun and a fish fry.

spring kings - the bar
Yankee Troller replied to slapshot's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Only the first weekend that was needed. We started doing the kings in front of Wilson the following weekend, and never headed back to the bar. On the last friday of the event my charter took home and ate what could of been the 5k fist place fish per the scale at the boatyard if they entered the derby like i asked. Last year was the latest year Ive seen up there and I have been going for almost 10 springs now. The dumb lakers were there in swarms though, so at least there were fish! -
Folks this is why it is highly recommended that you at least finish High School (college helps too). Mis-spelling words usually isn't a HUGE deal, but when you cant spell the word "on" its obvious you were tokin' up before and after school.

It was pretty depressing!

The problem exist with the slip owners who dock there for the season. He starts to put those boats in mid May. That is the reason why he has room for the derby only. There are about 6 of us who come back every year for the month, and he accommodates us each year. Then there are the same guys who have been there for the Pro-Am for YEARS. So, what you need might be a problem since you want to stay through the Pro-Am. But, if you need something for just the derby you should be all set.

I e-mailed the guy and never heard back from him. -
Did u fish with Lenny and I the one day we had the slob Laker on? I think we had to back down on him.
-
Sure! I'll take your money

i agree about fighting fish on core and copper. Its not very fun, but you know that your big boy of the day WILL come off it. As far as fighting i would choose the rigger rod with a spoon. Now there is a clean/fun fight.
-
They make a special bead for the braid line
-
Im a leadcore/copper guy b/c I know that throughout the day our big boy will fall victim to one of those set-ups!

I just got a call from Kevin Jerge and he wanted me to let you guys know that he has slips available from april through May15th. So if your fishing the derby he can accomodate you. I stay here every year. It is an upscale place with great people! The facilities are the best I have seen on the lake (and I have been up and down the south shore). To contact him: Kevin Jerge 716-863-1001 or [email protected]

Yeah, no other chip showed me contour lines. So, yeah it was nice. Not that the lines mean a whole lot most of the time becasue we open water fish a lot, but it will be nice for following the bar in the spring or fishing shoals for browns (yeah like I do that). I picked up a apair of Eagel 500c's for $175 a piece brand new in the box. -

Something tells me I may be buying 2 of them if we keep the boat we have now! I bought 2 brand new GPS units for it, so I need a chip to go with them. -

Yankee Troller replied to Erbyjoe's topic in Open Lake Discussion
When I was at bass pro this weekend we played with all the chips they had and the only chip that showed the Lake O topo was the Navionics Gold. Now im sure if it shows the bar it would show the rest of the lake, but don't quote me. -

Gander mountain has it. I have heard it isnt as good as the real thing. There are some other imitation cut bait strips out now that I saw on GLA. You may want to look into that too if your looking for a substitute.

J- plugs in the spring?
Yankee Troller replied to slapshot's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
I have run them up at the bar on a wire rig on and off and I have yet to take a shot on it. Although I have taken shots on stickbaits from spring kings. I did hear of a guy doing pretty well on a Lyman a year or so ago up at the bar, but it was a one day thing. -
Yes it is. Like I said I have two of them that way. Im not saying its the best, but thats the way they do it in the bass boat industry, or at least the top of the line manufacturers. If I were to buy a brand new furuno u bet Im having a marina drill the holl in my trolling boat and mounting a true thru hull.
-
Yup, I have two of them. One for my digital lowrance flasher and another for my lowrance fishfinder. You epoxy it center of boat near the rear in the bildge area. Like I said I can keep bottom up to 65mph (except for when i jump a wave). It marks fish too, but I only really loo at this when im idoling. Bass boats use this becasue at the speeds they travel and the amount of boat that is inthe water when trimmed out anything that an offset the boat can create a chine walk or the boat not to handle and hard to drive.
-
A true thru hull transducer requires you to cut the hole into your hull. Basically if you laid under your boat on the trailer or at dry dock you could see it. I used epoxy to secure my lowrance thru hull trasnducer to the bottom of my bass boat without cutting any holes and i can keep reading bottom unitl i go over 65mph. I got the 2 part epoxy from autozone i think.
