All depends on the transducer. If the transducer recommends one then there is a substantial improvement in performance. The B60 through hull I had installed on my Penn Yan doesn't require a fairing.

Been running snap swivels to spoons for as long as I can remember. No shortage of fish here.

Shimano Talora roller rods. 8 footers

Sounds like you need to do some maintenance on those Tekotas. Absolutely no reason for sticky drags on those 600's other than neglect. At least on the 16 I own anyway. All with the original drag washers. No upgrades. Probably just need to grease the drag washers.They are a wet drag system. Counter window I can't help you with as I never had that problem. Been running the same two Tekota 600's with wire for about 9 or 10 years now without any complaints. They have taken many big kings and still going strong. Also have an older set of the Blue Diamond roller rods and a set of Tolara roller rods and I prefer the Shimano Tolaras over the Okumas for Kings. Either way you will be happy. Convert to hydraulic steering and you will have a much greater selection of AP's and better performance from the unit you put in. I wouldn't say there is a "cheap " way out if you want performance. I know plenty of guys that took the cheap route and they are happy until the wind kicks up a bit. Good luck with your decision.

In general I would say yes, there is a benefit to running hydraulic steering with an AP. Not having any experience with the Raymarine units you are referring to I will leave it at that. Good luck with your project. Glen

Andy the rods I was talking about are Okuma BD-C-1002MH-1 10' I ran them last winter on Seneca with my slide divers and they worked well. Enough backbone to run the full size divers but limber enough to detect hits from some really small LL's and enjoy a battle from those 3-6 lb fish we hit. They work excellent for the LO Browns as well. Good luck with whatever you end up with.

I run a couple of Okuma 10 ft dypsy rods for my slide divers with Braid. Great for LO Browns and Finger Lakes fish. I'll post up the model # after work Andy..
