Looking for a kicker!
mudflat replied to the KATHLEEN's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
I would go with a 9.9 hp, high thrust 4 stroke with at least a 20" shaft, maybe even a 25" would work better depending on the kicker mount. I also strongly suggest getting power tilt and electric start, it's a long reach over the transom on a Penn Yan. This is what I have on a PennYan 255 and it does a good job. -
You definitely want a filter/water separator in your line, especially with ethanol gas. It will have 2 outlets so you can hook the kicker's fuel line up there.

I've used a Yamaha T9.9 with both a 20" and a 25" shaft length on my PY 255 Intruder, the 20" worked OK but the prop would ventilate some in 3-4 footers and the motor would rev up and down. The 25" works better. I would also recommend using a solid mount like the one from Adventure Marine and go for electric start and tilt/trim. Add a TR-1 Gold and you'll have a great package, gives you excellent boat control and lets you relax and fish.

Depends on what you're fishing for. For stripers all you need is a marine licenses all the way to the Troy dam but if you're going for bass, ect you need a NYS license. Best to get both just to avoid any problems.

Look at an Airmar B60, 50/200 Works great with my HDS 8, much better picture than the stock 83/200 Here's an installation video from BOE Marine, you might want to check with Jim for a price. It's not that difficult of a job to install once you drill the hole in the bottom. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QcBdkjCtifA

Fleet Tracker You are on the right track, check out Fish Doctor's video tips: http://www.fishdoctorcharters.com/videos/video8W.html Spro swivel at each end of the copper with a haywire twist knot, it will be difficult to get the copper through the swivel eye 2 times but it can be done. Use a Palomar Knot for the Power Pro and your favorite knot for the leader. You can also use back to back haywire twist knots to splice the copper back together after your first fubar.

how much line for downrigger reels
mudflat replied to tbulhead's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
A 47 size reel works well with 20lb line and will hold 280 yds, if you want to use 30lb line for fleas you will only fit a little less than 200 yds on one. Probably still ok for a rigger rod but I would prefer more line just in case. I use either a 57 or a Saltist 40 for 30lb line. http://www.fishusa.com/Product/Daiwa-Sealine-SG-Line-Counter-Reels -
Could be the condenser is breaking down when it gets hot. Try replacing the points and condenser if you can find a set.
