  1. I bought some Cabela's Nylon fishing pants. They are very thin and cool and the flies absolutely leave me alone. I have not been bitten once while wearing these pants! I had my wife hem them long so they bunch up around my ankles even when I sit. A great feature is that I can wet them and the water quickly evaporates and keeps me very cool on hot, humid fly days. They are so thin and lite it is almost like fishing buffy.
  2. Andy: I thought you used bailing wire for everything.
  3. I guess you mounted them on the sides, correct? You should be able to turn as sharp as you want while trolling without worry. You will know withing 5 minutes on the water, just make some tight turns and watch your cables. Problems come if you go into nuetral in a stiff cross wind. That can put your cables into your prop as you drift accross them. Keep that in mind if you ever do that. You need to ensure your cables are clear before shifting into gear. Shifting into nuetral is not something you will be doing too often with your riggers deployed. It is kind of an exrtremis situation thing.
  4. Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name: Dapper Dan with Breaktime and Under the Float ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s): 7/9 to 7/11 Time on Water: Weather/Temp: Wind Speed/Direction: Waves: Surface Temp: Location: LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: Many Total Boated: Most Species Breakdown: 19 Major kings, 1 nice atlantic, lots of steelhead, several browns, several lakers and fewer skippies than usual Hot Lure: Green E-chip with Sweet Pea fly Trolling Speed: Down Speed: 2.0 to 2.1 and 2.5 to 2.7 Boat Depth: 130 and 200 to 300 Lure Depth: 90 to 125 ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS ==================== Breaktime fished his boat on Friday evening before I arrived. He did 8 adult kings in 2 hours in front of the Plant. We fished the Dapper Dan on Saturday and had a good day on large kings, We found them between the watch tower and Oswego in 200 to 300 FOW and then again at 130 FOW in front of ALCAN. We boated 9 for 12 on the big boys and threw back a number of teenagers, skippies and trout. We lamented that we didn't enter the Pro Am because we had a box that would have place high in the standings. Hit the water on Sunday morning on Breaktime and filled our box again with large kings. This box would have cemented a high finish in the Pro Am. We may enter next year. We kept 5 large kings and a 9 1/2 pound steelhead. We fished the same water as we did on Saturday. We turned a double and one tangled the 300 copper. While I was working on the mess, holding the line, a 3rd king smashed the lure. Can you say ouch? Power Pro cuts your finger when you are holding it when a mature king swats the fly! We fished Monday morning on Dapper Dan and came up a fish short. we were 5 for 6 on large kings but reserved a space in the box for a derby fish. We trew back a number of keeper kings and steelhead but never did find the derby fish. Can't fill the box every trip! Breaktime was working a 15 lb king when the other rigger fired. It was a nice 20 pound king with a wild streak. He jumped 2 or 3 times and then charged sideways and tangled a 450 copper and a 10 color. We got both in the boat and then started untangling the FUBAR. I was still working on the mess when a dipsy fired followed by a rigger. That was the 2nd double in a row while the FUBAR was still trailing behind the boat. I would appreciate it if the tan boat who made off with my 400 copper, Pro Troll and fly in front of Oswego on Saturday would return it. I miss the $50. Lukily, I needed to drop a chummer off in Oswego and St Peter's Outfitter had another 400 copper on the shelf so, it was back in action in an hour and took some more fish. After dropping the chummer off at the pier, I decided to make a pass through 130 FOW between Oswego and ALCAN where I had good luck several days before. The crew complained all the way into the zone but as soon as we leveled off at 130 feet we nailed a tripple on large kings (450 copper, rigger and a dipsy). They quickly stopped squawking. It was a great weekend which resulted in 19 for 23 hits on large kings and a good number of trout and teenagers. I manged to break a new Okuma Blue Diamond rigger rod while popping a rubber band release. I do hope the warranty covers it. We found 2 decidedly good speeds. We took good fish between 1.8 and 2.2 and then again from 2.5 to 2.8. The middle zone didn't seem to produce. We caught several on spoons, blue dophin when bright and moonshines when dim. Most of the hits came on flashers and flies about equally mixed between E-Chips and Spin Doctors. Green paddles and white worked well and Blue Bubble, White and Blue Dolphin Spin Doctors produced. 400 and 450 coppers were effective while the 600 was silent. It really seemed to be a rigger bite for us between 90 and 125 down depending on light and temperature conditions. Riggers produced 1/2 of our hits while coppers and dipsies shared the rest. Dispies were from 275 to 350 back. The last 2 weeks have been so hot I can't pass up the coming weekend.
  5. Can you add a few more nouns, verbs and adjectives so we know what you are asking? We are fisherman, not psychics.
  6. Generally speaking, no; about the same. Spin Doctors like a shorter set back than Pro Troll style flashers. I find SD work well on my dipsies and Pro Trolls work well on long lines. I adjust the holes and leader lenghts depending on the speed I'm trolling. You can run SD slower than Pro Trolls, IMO. Top 3 are my best producers, the remainder are not in any specific order: Glow White Green Glow White Blue Dolphin Blue Bubble Green Dolphin Ace Chartruese White Glow My best flies: Ultra Glow white Green Crinkle Glow Hammer Hypnotist
  7. Chris: Catfish Marina still has a camp slot and a slip or 2 open. When you say "run trips" do you mean charters? Catfish Marina doesn't allow charters to operate there but, Catfish Creek Fishing Camp does. Catfish Marina will slip a boat without the owner having a camp but, not the other way around. Send a PM if you want more info. I'm not sure I still have your phone number.
  8. Chris: Mine were on the boat when I purchased it. These are not the chairs sold by West Marine. I checked their web site last night when posting to this thread because I've seen similar chairs there. After reading the horrendous feedback on the WM site, I realize those are a "cheap imitation" made in China, not the Wize chairs. Are you still slipping at Mike's?
  9. I use the Wise Chairs as well chairs and love them; they are absolutely comfortable. I have the stainless steel versions and have used them hard for 3 years and they hold up well. Just keep the nuts tight and replace the footpads occasionally (West Marine sells replacement pads). Everyone comments on the comfort of these chairs. I'll definitely buy another set when these give up the ghost.
  10. My last dipsy hit last season started at 275 on the counter and I thumbed him to a stop on the last wrap of wire! The counter said 1150 so, his first run was almost 900 feet! I moved to larger dipsy reels this year so I could add an extra 500 feet of line behind the 1000 feet of wire. I definately suggest the full Magilla. The fish are turining out to be quite large this year. Power Pro costs more than the wire. Salmon fishing aint cheap.
  11. I had one of each and I used 12 lb balls without issue.
  12. You don't need to put it out to 200 feet to check for the proper tension. Set it out 20 feet and test it. Your dispie will have just as much tension on the release 1 foot under the water as it will at 100 feet.
  13. Rick: Gotta agree with you. It has been hot for 2 weeks now. Greens seem best as do riggers. 400-500 copper OK, 600 silent. Definately a F/F bite for me. Been taking them anywhere from 1.8-2.8 and 90 to 125 down. Limits every trip on nice adults. Heard you on the Lake this weekend. We probably passed you a number of times.
  14. I purchased a set of Tournement Pro riggers last year and have had the same issue. I'm using 15 lb balls. When the riggers are down 120 to 130, they trip the breaker around 30-40 feet on occasion when retrieving. Last year they tripped every time and Big Jon said my power run needed to be heavier. My shop added heavier wire and it seemed to fix the problem but, one of them tripped today at 35 feet.
  15. You don't need to retie unless there is some noticeable reason to do so. Kink! Never allow slack in your wire dipsy. If you get slack, carefully tighten it up ahile making sure you don't tighen up on a pigtale. IT WILL turn into a kink. Kinks often fail when you pop the dipsy. Wire dispsies are expensive to learn about without some hands-on instruction. I always recommend beginners start with braid dispies untill they master the technique.
  16. They have an important job to do. Only you knew what you were doing there. They spotted a contact, investigated, classified you as no threat and left you alone. Seems unobtrusive to the fishing. Wake on Lake Ontario? Seems a regualar occurance and no worse than the waves we fish in. Binos are a poor substitute for eyeballs. Binos are hard to stabalize on the water unless you have very expensive gyro-stabalized glasses.
  17. I snell tournament style harnesses on the water in about 45 seconds each without any tools other than cutters. Nothing ever comes loose. I use a different snell than most; I use a bait loop style snell with 50# Seagar.
  18. As always, you're welcome. I enjoyed the company! Chumming for salmon by dropping rods is not the best method. Big fish can do a number on copper fairly quickly. They seem to relish mixing long lines together. I'm a firm believer that if you aren't losing some tackle, you aren't fishing hard enough or pushing the envelope. Of course, I don't include deep-sixing rods in that theory. There's time to sleep when I die. Until then, I fish hard.
  19. Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name: Dapper Dan ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s):1 through 5 July Time on Water: Weather/Temp: Wind Speed/Direction: Waves: Surface Temp: Location: LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: to many to count Total Boated: 111 of 138 lock ups Species Breakdown: 19 large Adult kings, 6 midsize adult kings, 15 steelhead, 2 rainbow, 2 cohos, 2 browns, far too many lakers, a plethora of skippies, 1 lamprey Hot Lure: Green e-chip with sweet pea A-TOM-MIK tournement fly, Spin Doctor Blue Bubble with A-TOM-MIK glo hammer Trolling Speed: Down Speed: 2.4 to 3.0 Boat Depth: 250 to 350 and 120 to 140 Lure Depth: riggers around 115, dipsies above 300 feet, 400 to 500 copper ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS ==================== I made 6 trips over a long weekend: 5 mornings and 1 evening. All were good trips with good rod handlers: Little Boat, 5 More Minutes, Danno, Blue Magic and Under the Float. We averaged about 4 fish per hour. Found lots of kings in 250 to 350 fow. Riggers were set between 115 to 140 feet down and dipsies set back 260 to 375 feet with 333 being a good target (#1 set to 2.5). We started with a mix of spoons and F/F and let the fish indicate their preference. It didn't take long to identify a F/F bite. Spoons took a small share of the total. Coppers longer than 400 feet worked very well except the 600 which, only took about 5 fish. Our best rig was a standard Green Pro-Troll e-chip with an A-TOM-MIK Sweet Pea fly. This hammered away on the rigger between 115 and 125 down. I tried replicating the set up but, it didn't work as well. This one F/F took 1/2 of our hits on Monday. Our second best rig was a Blue Bubble Spin Doctor in front of a Glo Hammer on a dipsy. I was able to present my wife with a great morning on her birthday. We did 18- for 21 and brought in a full box of 5 adult kings and 1 large steelhead. Little Boat managed to pull off 2, single-rod doubles on Monday morning. This morning we finished the day pulling each rod on a fish. Our best speed seemed to be 2.6 to 3.0 on the ball. We even had suspended lakers chase us down at 2.6 mph. We saw the thermocline between 80 and 120 feet in different locations. Water temps were difficult with 64.7 degrees from the surface to 50 feet; 64.3 degrees at 75 feet; 63 degrees at 100. 110 saw 57 degrees. We had a new rigger rod drop over the side with a flasher and fly stowed on it and watched it sink. We were unsuccessfully attempting to save a tangled 450 copper at the time. I was a bit steamed after destroying a copper and losing a complete rigger rod set up so, I sat and tied flies for 30 minutes while I cooled down. I got back in the game when the 500 copper started screaming on a major. While I was fighting it, I noticed the center rigger bouncing a bit and I pointed out the shaker to the crew. We were all surprised (and I was happy) when we found my rod hooked by the slider on the center rigger. We trolled with that at the ball for an hour! I was surprised at the very small number of boats on the lake over the Holiday weekend.
  20. Copper catches fish. I would add a 600 marked every 100 feet. Run it down the chute at any lenght you need. You caught fish on the copper on my boat last year. I took a number of fish on 400, 450, 500 and 600 this weekend.
  21. I'm interested if still available. What size are they?
