  1. Let me know what you think about this topic. On State Forest land, you can get a camping permit during hunting season. Good news if that is your thing but I have seen the other side of the equation. At Sonyea there are groups that set up camp in the same spot every year and then have a misguided thought of what “their hunting spots” are. This has resulted in some conflicts, one of which I was witness to as a deer had passed by two parties each taking shots at it. The angst of another hunter being close to “their” spot resulted in an angry barrage of over 100 rounds (illegal 30 shot clips) in succession. This was during COVID and there was nobody coming if the altercation went really stupid. Thankfully I was at the other end of the property and represented the first and last time I hunted there. Saturday I was in the process of assisting my brother getting his deer out of the woods. The deer was way back in on state forest land and easier to drag the deer downhill than the 3/4 mile uphill. On way into the property I came into contact with a hunting party that had a permit to camp which included two walled tents and a portapotty. The camp site was well onto the property in the middle of a golden rod field right in deer central. I truly feel bad for any hunter showing up after having scouted the area only to find 18 hunters as part of a church group camping there. I wonder how others feel about this topic. This is southern tier location of 1200 acres.
  2. Finger licking good! 👍
  3. Wow 😮. What a way to get it done! I am sure your party was wondering what the hell is going on over there lol.
  4. Buck pole
  5. Three out of four guys in camp scored on state land eight pointers. Done son.
  6. I think it is safe to say we are not getting another hatchery any time soon so perhaps the focus in the short term should be on figuring out how to get better imprinting/ numbers with pen projects. Others on this thread have proposed this approach as well.
  7. Congrats! I have seen expandables plane off at weird angles after hitting a rib upon entry
  8. Sorry for your losses.
  9. Slow start. One scrub buck cruising at first light is all.
  10. Good luck Rob. This morning has not met expectations yet. Started off with a flock of gobblers roosting all around me. How they didn’t take off when I came in to stand in the dark is beyond me but they stayed. As light came they made such a racket gobbling and yelping every 20 seconds that I had to stand up and flap my arms while making alarm putts to get them to leave. I must have looked like an ahole. One yearling so far. Not sure where the deer are but the blue jays tell me they are across the creek.
  11. “……the waiting is the hardest part”
  12. Arrow looks promising!
  13. Nothing worse for deer movement than a warm south wind and approaching rain. Not seeing much movement. Two yearlings is all. Anyone try Conquest Scents doe-n-Heat bomb? I think I got hoodwinked into buying a $20 can of air. This stuff has no detectable odor.
  14. I had to lock up my brakes the last two mornings on way in because of bucks mindlessly crossing the road in the dark. Called in a nice state land 3.5 yr old eight pointer this morning with a snort wheeze and some grunts. Short tines so he got a pass. Mr itchy was not happy. Seeing new rubs and scrapes show up today. Ramping up for sure.
  15. Bucks were cruising this morning. Fresh scrapes finally appearing. Get out if you can.
  16. Hmmm 🤔 I don’t have those symptoms of dodger-induced squirts. You may want to see someone for that condition. I can only imagine what you are like when considering fish shaped flashers
  17. FishUSA has Silver Horde dodgers
  18. He is mouth breathing.
  19. Spent some time on the ground rattling and scouting remote southern tier state land this morning. Prime food is in shortage in the woods. With a poor nut crop, and no apples has deer on an AG pattern. Do some scouting this year if you are heading to southern counties as everything is really spread out.
  20. Another 6 pointer came by tracking a young doe. Everyone is still walking very carefully on pins and needles. Both parties are standing on the sidelines at the dance because the music ain’t quite right
  21. Slammed on brakes on way in to avoid hitting a cruising scrub buck with my Yukon. Same pattern so far. Two yearlings without mom. One scrub buck slowly working through cover scent checking everything. ……….and here come the squirrels! Lots of rutting squirrel chase scenes
  22. With all the problems facing Washington, Senator Michael Lee chooses to spend his time trying to pass legislation that would strip public lands from us in support of development by the rich. Please email the senator and tell him how as American sportsmen we feel about his land grab attempt. https://www.lee.senate.gov/services/forms/29DA679C-D1AA-48A7-B3A7-B636DB627659/contact
  23. Based on an avid stream angler friend, the Genny had a slug of fish run the river and there are waves of fresh fish near the mouth coming in now. It stands to reason if there is natural reproduction happening on the south shore, the runs would be evolving later into the fall due to long term weather/seasons shifting.
  24. Rob, you ever consider trying the northern zone gun season? If anything it might be a good workout while rejuvenating the soul in Adirondacks.
