  1. With all the state launches closed for probably the rest of the year, there are going to be a lot of boats for sale in the Lake Ontario basin. Boats that have never seen salt water. My guess is that there will be great boats for low prices by the beginning of August.
  2. It's closed, but on Monday there was a DEC truck that had launched a boat. The boat was in the river opposite the closed launch stopping non existent boats in order to count non existent fish. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  3. The cloud burst on Saturday night sent the lake level up by 10 inches. I spent most of Sunday morning in a canoe catching dock sections and towing them back. It is the biggest rise in the water level that I have witnessed since 1979 when I bough the cottage on Owasco lake. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  4. Torpedo wire Last January I bought a 1000 feet of 19 strand wire and 300 feet of the weighted stainless wire and while loading up my reel I found a few places where a strand had come loose. I did not think much of it and cut the sections out and retied. Then just 3 weeks ago I bought another roll which had no defects at all. I used it with 200 feet of the weighted steel line and I just love it. One rod and reel for all the different lengths of weighted line instead of 4 rods with different footage of copper. I decided to give Matthew from Torpedo a call and explained about the first roll that I bought. He listened to my issue and told me that he would send me a replacement roll. Today I got the roll in the mail. These guys stand behind their product!! I will load up another reel with the 19 strand and 100 feet of the weighted steel line. It should go down about 20 foot and then an additional 20 foot for every hundred feet of 19 strand that I let out. What I will have now are 2 rods which will replace several coppers and also allow me to use it instead of different lengths of leadcore simply by letting out more backing. The best thing about this stuff is the uncanny ability to be in a pile on the deck and not becoming a bird's nest. I had about 40 feet laying on the deck in front of me and I just reeled it back onto the reel. I am done with copper. I will have at least one Penn 340 levelwind for sale.
  5. If you tell us more about the boat we may be of some help. What brand is it? outboard or I/O is it open or a cuddy. What year is it and what VIN? For most aluminum boats a 2000 pound capacity winch will be sufficient. If it is on rollers you are fine with 2000 pounds. If it is on bunks you may want to spray the bunks with silicone to make them more slippery. all you do is a roughly horizontal pull, you are not going vertical.
  6. The reason why it does not make national news is that it is not very sexy and it happens all over the place. Face it. If it bleeds, it leads. This water news does not bleed. As for people coming from far away; If I go to a far away place to do something special I always check out on local weather and potential fun spoilers before I go. That is why I love the internet
  7. I've never needed any of those sleepy pill, but whenever I go out in real bad weather ,I make sure to munch on raw ginger. I love that stuff.
  8. I'm glad that they stopped wasting taxpayers money on a road that has no economic value and stops in the middle of nowhere Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  9. It may not be open ,but last Sunday there were pickups with empty trailers in the parking lot.
  10. I always go from Rochester on the 490 to 531 and from the end of 531 due north to the 104 west ,right on route 98 until I hit route 18. this is fastest and shortest. The roads are good. But if you come from south or east of Rochester ,the T-Way and route 98 are just as good. The lake Ontario park way is a moonscape. Maybe it should be torn out and rebuilt as a bike path or walk way
  11. We were there on Sunday and we fished for 10 hours anywhere between 20 and 200 feet. All we got was one hit in on a dipsy 120 down over 175. We ended up skunked and discussing how to make a mold for kitchen sinks with hooks. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  12. Out of the little salmon. Last week we fished Olcot and with the cold water we had there we decided that the East end might be warmer ,so we fished Mexico Bay. The lake was strangely empty for this time of year. It is probably a result of of the state launch being closed. (for no good reason!) The NYS parks authority could very easily have brought in some lumber to connect from shore to floating dock. It amazed me to see that nobody threw the barricade in the water and used it to walk to the floating docks. Once we were out in the bay we had between 59 and 60 degree nice green water. So we set up in twenty feet but the browns were elsewhere. We went to north a bit and fished in about 40 to 70 feet with good results. one nice big fat brown trout and a bakers dozen of steelhead. It was classical fishing, running in clear and green water along a muddy slick line that meandered along the shore going in and out dependent on the constantly shifting wind direction. Orange and blue were the preferred colors. It was very nice to box out and it was very good to see big fat round bellies. Even the steelies that had come back out the river looked healthy. It seems that a benign winter makes all the difference.
  13. Do I sense a bit of cynicism? I took care to stay about a half a mile away from his rig.
  14. Olcot I took my son today out to Olcot so we could partake in the horn of plenty of kings swimming in that area. I guess they were not swimming where we went. We had a blank screen most of the day apart from the lakers sticking to the bottom. Besides,we needed to pay a lot of attention to all the debris floating in some areas. So what do you do in Olcot when you can't catch a fish? You take out the binoculars and scout for a special boat. Vince's boat. Its hard to miss. When we located his rig quite a ways out, we made our way to that general area and we ended up with 3 nice steelies. Thank you Vince!! you saved our day.
  15. My experience with the OMC Cobra has been expensive and disastrous and after some reading up on the subject it seems that I am not the only one.
  16. Is it true that these outboards are made in China?
  17. I was not going to promote a kicker although I would not go out without one, but when you mentioned that your main engine is an OMC Cobra ,it caused me to react. The track record on those engines is not great and that kicker is much needed insurance!
  18. With the water this high,it is probably a good idea to use the south end launch. For once, you will not get stuck in the mud and the weeds.
  19. Those extra 3 inches will make a difference, but shifting the weight on the boat farther towards the back can make a difference. Trimming the engine all the way down is not good because it will push the bow down and the stern up. You want to try to raise the bow a bit, that will bring the outboard a bit deeper. As for changing the pitch? I would say BS
  20. That is how its supposed to be,but...the big contractors have their servants in the local and national government positions and plans on infrastructure projects are not built according to need but according to politicians needs.
  21. Try home depot wall mounted bike hangers. They are $1.98 a piece and a pair can easily hold 3 or 4 rods.
  22. If you are going to spend some serious money on a fish finder, you might as well spend it on a real good one with great service to boot. Go Furuno 628 or 588.Combined with a good transducer you will have the best! reading the comments again, I should mention that the Furuno is very userfriendly
  23. East end versus West end I have fished both the east end and the west end ,but mostly the east end over the past few years. I'm just wondering about the good fishing out west and center and the steadily declining fishing in the east end for most species both in size and numbers. The little Salmon River used to have full slips but every year there are fewer boats and some charter captains are relocating farther west. Is it because the nutrients coming down from lake Erie and the other rivers are gobbled up by the Zebra and Quagga mussels and there are not enough nutrients left this far east, or is there another reason? There is of course the possibility that I am just a lousy fisherman, but it seems to be an opinion shared by many other fishermen. There seems to be no shortage of Lakers, but that is mostly on the sand flats farther up north and quite a ways to go from The little Salmon. The grounds in front of the power plant just are not what they used to be.
