  1. Lot of detail for an apparent newbe ! 20 lb. mono of fluro works fine for salmon ; as posted can go lighter for spring browns maybe 12 lb. We have stopped using wire braid is easier for us but use what works for us ! IMO after 34 years fishing on the south shore tackle did not mare much difference to us ie. what was at the end of the tackle starting with quality swivels and the bait [ lures ] changing every year is the bottom line for us ! Captain Dan Keating has several books on salmon fishing , the latest is " Big Water Wisdom " with detailed Q & A . His expertise is on Lake Michigan but the general advice still works !
  2. Ditto on reading the " Owners Manual " first !
  3. The question was " fogging " the engine ! ie. spraying fogging oil into the cylinders while the engine is running .
  4. My bad news story on the topic ! Was fishing on an exfriends boat ; on my boat the fisherman with the fish on directs the boat . Not this guy ! I get a nice keeper King maybe ~10lbs. putting on a good fight ; boat owner is on his cell phone with fishing pal . He puts the boat in NEUTRAL and the Chinook salmon charges the boat at the same time ! I cannot real in fast enough , with slack line the fish getting to the stern of the boat . The line wraps around the prop and BREAKS OFF ! Things got bad nasty between us ! We do not talk !
  5. What about battery drain on the electric riggers ? My concern ! I have yet to try and start my old 70 3 cylinder OMC by rope start the engine with the rope start , maybe worth a try ? My 9 hp. Yamaha does not charge ! One of my several DUMB rescues on Lake Ontario was 3 guys in a 19ft. IO V8 ? motor 5 miles off the east pier of Port Weller with a south west wind and ONE dead car battery ! { with that wind they would probably not made it to the north shore with out being swamped ! I was able to jump start their boat with my cables { they did not have any ! I have two batteries deep cycle one over size for my boat !
  6. Have a BigJon and Scotty manuals and no comparison the Scotty wins hands down ! The bigJon cracks at the handle/spool . The Scotty is a well thought out design and support for Scotty is excellent ! Good comment on used electrics , the motor on my bigJon burned out !
  7. Mollie our 11mounth old GSP has changed in a hound ! It looks like she is going to be a " two year dog " ! { ie two years until we can do field work with her ]
  8. Ditto on the super fine steel wool ; allows the new paint to stick better ! If you can add a " harder " to the paint and start with a primer coat if you can !
  9. Thanks for bringing up the thread ! Bottom line " Mollie " is presently at class as I post ! She is 11months old and may be a" 2 year dog" ! Generally dogs are 100% genetics [ less 10 % ] . She comes from a long line of field dogs and is CKC recorded ! It was clear too us that she was born to hunt and point ! { We have a large yard enclosed on a creek .] She is smart and stubborn and does not like to be told ! " You get out of a dog what you put into it " { again less 10 % who are hopeless and make good pets ! ] She is not " gun shy " but will run away which is a major problem ! To soon to post if she can be field work !
  10. Bottom line for us is the more you run the greater chance of tangles ! Until you sort out the new boat run 2 downriggers ,in deeper water & add 2 Dipsy's if you are good at it then " mix and match " ! [ plus stackers or sliders on the riggers ] IMO less can be more !
  11. Falling barometric pressure [ esp. if it is falling rapidly ] can be a good sign of bad weather !
  12. I had a similar concern putting the Yamaha 9.9 on my 16 ft. Starcraft with a 70 hp. 1984 Evinrude [ should have got the 60hp. instead for better trolling control ; my 8hp. Evinrude kicker was getting old and tired ] Have had the Yamaha for 2 years and never looked back ! The 4cycle engines are an amazing improvement ! To deal with your specific concerns stern weight was NEVER a problem for us !
  13. One aspect I dealt will more than once with a 16 ft. Starcraft is the bigger boat friends ! ie. generally looking for a "cheap " charter ! I will take out a " newbie " even some one I do not know to try salmon fishing [ for free] Their usual first reaction is the size of the boat and generally goes down hill after that and they do not ask again !
  14. Braid has been catching fish for us and easier to use IMO !
  15. Lot of different opinions ; consider a 270 as a # 1 chose ! A 30:06 is a big gun but has been posted with the proper ammunition will work just fine ! Bottom line [ unless you hand load ] do not get any gun that you cannot get ammunition for when you need it ! Eg. I was given a 257 Roberts Remington 7600 pump ; very little ammunition available ! We hand loaded 88 gr Hornady V Max but never got to use it on coyotes !
  16. Unless you are good at it I would forget it ! Sk8man touched a lot of the bases ! We see expert fishermen out at ~ 3am and come in at sunup and they do it every day ! Launching at 6 am form a trailer is enough of a chore for me ! In the dark it gets a lot more complicated along with the possible meeting weird people at the dock !
  17. No doubt that coyotes hurt the turkey population IMO !
  18. Check out " Spoonpullers " site for Niagara bar reports !
