  1. Just out of curiosity is it a I/O or outboard ? Filling it with water and putting it in the water are two different animals as far as finding leaks go . When in the water you have pressure trying to force water into the hull through any opening. When you put water in the hull,it's pretty much gravity with very little pressure /force trying to do its thing. A example ,put some water into a plastic container with a slight crack, but the crack is tight against itself, maybe a you get a drip out of it,maybe not. Now put a lid on it with a valve and put some air/ (pressure ) into it,watch the water pour out in seconds.
  2. Glad you didn't take it the wrong way ! I heard through the grapevine that one Pro team got DQ'd and another got by on the skin of there teeth as there were questions about there storage of fish as well.
  3. Nice report . To the best of my knowledge the Pro's are not allowed to cull there fish ,so whatever they catch that is legal in size goes in the box . Many of the Pro's were in by 9-10 am because of limiting out so quickly. That may be a reason why you landed the biggest fish vs the Pro's not having the option of culling there catch. Please don't take this the wrong way ,you did a fantastic job out there ,just wanted people to know there are different rules for each division. Maybe next year fish the Pro division and see how you fair against them straight up. Again nice report and congrats on the big fish !
  4. Have never seen that before, at any rate if it was designed that way I would leave it alone.
  5. To the best of my knowledge the "over fill " line is on the front of the carb and goes back to the fuel pump ,not the valve cover. Why would they have raw fuel possibly being dumped into the valve train ? Most Mercruisers have a hose on each valve cover that goes to the spark arrestor air filter. Any oil-residue that is generated by the engine that ends up in the valves covers is pushed and drawn towards the carb where it gets burnt , in theory with the gas. Not aware of any vacuum lines that would be attached to a valve cover , if anything there would be pressure not vacuum associated with the valve covers. So if its a 4 banger and only has one valve cover then leave it there. Doesn't hurt to clean the metal "air cleaner ' maybe wash out with old gas or carb cleaner , then wash-soak in a old bucket with dishwashing detergent.
  6. I would go to there website, furunousa.com. and post your issue on there forum. Or use the search icon with your model etc. Or maybe thehulltruth.com and there electronic forum, If no one replies on here.
  7. I would not worry about your putting it where it is in the picture. I would say 99% of fires on a boat are started by fumes [ and a errant spark ] .Fumes will drop to the lowest point in a hull , your bilge ,not in the area you want to put the tank.. That's why your blower duct hoses are set up to suck air and fumes from the bottom of the hull , not mid point or higher. If your bus bar and batteries are properly set up and all connections are doubled check I would not give it a second thought.
  8. Have FCV 600 L. No transducer , gain is with a + or - key pad. 150.00
  9. I took someone to small claims court ,he never showed up, I won the case . Here is the good part ,I was told to find out where he works ,good luck with that , then give info to Sheriffs dept , they collect it in small payments over many months , then I had to drive downtown to collect the monies from the Sheriffs Dept. It was a few hundred dollars , I never bothered and it cost me the small claims fee as well. Had to do it in the village he lived in as stated above. There is no guarantee that he will pay the judgment even if you win the case.Sometimes your better off cutting your losses and moving on. If the block and everything else is good it may be cheaper [ in the long run ] and easier to buy some manifolds off Craigslist or ebay. Good luck
  10. The price point on the Metalz for the quality is spot on. The swivels bases and rod holders are as smooth as it gets . Own 3 with the small risers and mid length booms , opted for 300 of cable and faster motor , the slower one would of been fine. The owner was bought out by Traxstech years ago and started up again. I also have 3 Traxstech on the primary boat which IMHO are the best ,but with the swivels etc your close to spending as much for 3 Metalz as one Traxstech would cost you. If money was no object I would go Traxstech all day .

The only time you should ( might ) have fumes is when your putting fuel into the tank. Yes. You should ways run the blower before starting ,even if you did not just fuel her up. Your boat is sitting in 40 * + water and that in itself will conduct enough heat to keep the block from freezing.
  12. No cons on that endeavor. All pro's. Easier starting in most cases , less maintenance , more reliable , no adjustments needed . Make sure you get the proper coil that is suggested , something to do with ohms , stock ones don't cut it in the long run, they burn up. Have two 305's and two 350's ,all converted.
  13. Ground in the water ? UHH I don't think so.
  14. ^ This... or a solar charger. In the long run the extra batteries vs trying to set up a inadequate charging system would be the way I would go. If you have a separate battery for the main I wouldn't worry about it,Carry some jumpers and see how long you can go with your house battery before it dies. And or buy a jump pack , which is good to have on the water or in the car during the winter
  15. Never ,got stopped at customs and didn't have a passport.
  16. It would be the 4.3 GM block with a Mercruiser outdrive. Or just text Roy as suggested.
  17. 3 year old topic .I would bet the OP has a boat by now.
  18. May want to replace the Fish finder with a combo unit. The one in the picture looks slightly dated. VH radio ,riggers ,rod holders and or tracks ,Fishhawk, updated safety gear ,2nd battery and selector switch ,new impeller and outdrive gear oil , thermostat , are all possible items that you may want to look into. Or none of the above and just use what you feel comfortable with.
  19. Salmon banger ? Out with jumper and back to back seat or seats, can't tell from the picture.. Pair of captains on swivel bases. Sound insulation on the engine box.Carbed engine ,you may be able to get it down to trolling speed without putting a plate on the outdrive. Whatever you paid for it is going to be at the very least matched or doubled by what you put into setting it up. I know this from first hand knowledge by doing it to a couple boats in the last few years. Good luck with a barn quality find !
  20. Hmmm , I thought I read someplace that it takes a year for a "drop " of water to move from one end of Erie to the other. I would think if they opened up the dams as much as they can on the St Larry that they could keep the levels somewhat under control. Not going to lose any sleep over it , just deal with it when the time comes.
  21. Not sure where the original post is, this one does not mention Volvo D4. Correct in doing your homework ! Personally anything under 30 or so I would prefer gas ,from a cost standpoint , ease of replacement, troubleshooting and being more familiar with working on them.
  22. Yes Advantage is the dealer I was thinking of ,a few doors down from Milton. The bigger question may be what year is the Volvo he is looking at. Marine engines seem to be a few years behind land engines, so it may have minimal electronics on it to even worry about. If the boat was what I was looking for along within my price point and the engine was a "basic" diesel I don't think I would back off the deal worrying about a mechanic to work on it, [ knowing who is in the area ,or having the ability to pull and trailer it to a shop if need be ]. They are fairly bullet proof , can run twice as long as a gasser if maintained ,gobs of torque, more efficient ,not to smelly if you have a side exhaust or run a additive.
  23. I did write " in most cases " and did mention diagnostic equipment as the biggest difference. There is no real differences in the actual design/ working parts of any diesel. The main differences are USUALLY found in the electronics and fuel delivery. Pistons, glow plugs, injectors, crank. cooling system are all basically the same, whether a Cat/ Volvo/Detroit etc. Just like all 4 stroke engines work the same ,except the Wankle .There is a Volvo dealership with certified technicians in Batavia. Just down the street from Milton Cat. One of the techs in there is a big speed boater on Ontario, but I haven't been in there in years to be able to give you a name. They have road technicians.
  24. Unless it's a newer engine and must be serviced by a " certified " Volvo tech to remain in warranty I see no big upside in " certification" . I call on mechanics all week long and the certified ones at dealers in most cases is just a piece of paper. The independents might not have the car makers dedicated scanners ( can't buy them ) which makes it easier for trouble shooting, but they figure the problem out ,might take a few more minutes because of that.
  25. Dan the Diesel Man ( Dan Chappman ) works independently out of his service truck. Keeps his boat at Bootleggers and is there at least every weekend and then some from mid April to late fall.Dont know what his expertise is with Volvos, but to me a diesel is a diesel with the only factor being the electronics involved. Probably can get his number if you want to pick his brain.
