Please Email DEC on proposed creel limit changes
HB2 replied to Gill-T's topic in Open Lake Discussion
They can change all the limits they want ,but IMO , it won't make much difference . The fish are about 2/3 the size they use to be . And the LOC leader boards are a good indicator of this . We catch what is out there . The lakes ecosystem has change since the first stocks . The bottom of the food chain is way smaller . Maybe the alwives don't have the nutrient value to pack the pounds on . Or it's something else . Also both lake and tribs guys are better at catching them . You can c&r , but there is a percentage released ,especially lake caught ,that won't make it . Caught a winter early 1980s Skamnia 38" that weighed a little over 13# . Got it under the driving park bridge . Was easy back then to catch 15# plus steelhead . Caught a bunch up to 20#. Now if I get a 12 # it's an event . Although I have landed a few the last few years maybe 14# . -

Close all tribs during spawning season ? So no fishing tribs from Sept to May ? Yea that'll go over big !! A very selfish ,short sighted statement.and not very well thought out . The reason our governor keeps giving money to perpetuate the fishery is all the revenue it brings the state . When the money stops coming in , he might funnel the hatchery/ management $ to a finger lakes wine center or to downstate . Where is voter base is So all those out of state snagging trib anglers some hate so much on here, are a necessary evil to keep the dollars flowing our way . Some of you guys need to wake up and smell the coffee on this . We need as many guys fishing as possible for bargaining leverage. -
It was all over for me after the call for the tackle made in the backfield . Instead of third and long . It's 15 + and first down . They are ruining the game . That was a textbook play .

Talked to the lampry guys at the Niagara show . Told them I caught a fair amount of kings with lampry the past few years . He seemed surprised by this or so I thought . Asked him when they were going to treat Sandy again as I have not seen the trucks sporting Canadian plates with the pipes from them running into the creek . He didn't know . Also asked if the lampricide they use has any collateral damage . He told me in a roundabout way that it did .

Advice on first “real” lake O boat (Penn Yan 212)
HB2 replied to Jto97's topic in Open Lake Discussion
21 ft a great boat for LO trolling . I have launched / loaded my 21 many times alone . Just have to be organized . But it is a pain to troll alone without remote steering . But I absolutely love trolling for staggers out of my 16 ft side console aluminum . You will love the Penn yan . But bigger boats cost way more to maintain . And gas , I can troll all morning on 2 gallons in my 16 . That much doesn't get me out to the fishing grounds in the big boat . B.O.A.T. Bust out another thousand . -
Easiest technique for keeping cimeter sharp?
HB2 replied to landingzone's topic in Open Lake Discussion
X2 on the diamond steel . The secret to a sharp knife is to keep it sharp . A few stokes on it during and after use . Those rapala things are great but don't last long. I like my electric knife . It's effortless . -
If you are open water fishing ,I have great luck with jigs under a small float just off bottom 1/64 , 1/32 or 1/16 max head Plastic bodies of various types I like crappie magnet , jawbone to name a few . I constantly look for new bodies everywhere I go . Not a fan of twisters as the tail comes around and gets hooked ,but they work .tubes work well also . Anything 1 1/2 to 2". Natural to crazy colors . A drop of fish attracting works wonders so you don't need to tip, which I never do. Long rod ,8 to 11 ft . 6 or 8 # mainline , 6 or 4 # tippet . I catch everything with this technique, especially when water is cold . I would think this method would shine on rock piers / shoreline like Oak Orchard .

My dad had a place in Venice about 20 miles south . I went out on a head boat a few times and had fun . I also fished the north jetty a lot . I found shrimp under a float drifted along the rock in tide current was best for me. Also jigs tipped with shrimp .

I just bought a lite bite with the ultimate ring at the show Friday . How did that thing pull ? -
... Rods and reels did you break this year ? I broke 2 of my favorite bass spinning rods . 1 in a door ,one I stepped on . They never break on fish . I usually am good for 2 per year . Some I can fix. Wore out one spinning reel Clicker went on a 47 H ,I think I can fix .

I put a 3/4 oz egg sinker just above my snap slid down over the knot . Helps to keep it from curling when the dipsy is not attached . Doesn't seem to affect performance . Might even help. Put a 2 oz on my riggers to do same Thing . Works great .

Thanks Gator for your technical explanation of your view on the aclimatation of LO kings over the last 40 years . Kind of confirmed my suspicion . You sound like a brainiac. Volunteerism is low in all groups / organizations. 10% of the members usually do 90% of the work . And it's,usually me doing it . I can't sit around and watch . Money should be no problem at all . If everyone gives a little, it can total a lot . No domestic rainbows in upper Sandy? I have lived in Holley for almost 60 years and you don't know what you're talking about . And I troll j plugs almost exclusively after labor day for many years . I do pretty well on them and have NEVER Snagged a salmon . And yes ,there are guys pier heading and trolling staggers off Sandy . Also last year I launched my small boat 2 days after we released the fish at Sandy . There were a bunch of cormerants having breakfast on all the little ones you could see swimming around . I imagine the smallmouth bass were well fed also . -
Another 20% CUT in Chinook Stocking for 2019

So more or less ,half The kings are Nat reproduction . The state stocks half and mother nature stocks half . We are like what, 15 generations removed from the first stocks way back when ? Seems to me these fish are not Pacific salmon ,but are now a lake ontario strain of Pacific salmon . And maybe they are evolving to the LO ecosystem right before our eyes . I think we may have to throw some of the life cycle stuff for our fish out the window from the ocean fish . Jeff Goldbloom said in Jaracic park that " life finds a way " . We were told at the beginning these fish don't reproduce . I'm curious if over the years to know if the percentage of Nat reproduction is increasing. -

The Dr was used as a pawn by the Dems . They knew about this six weeks before and held it till the last second and then somehow miraculously,it gets leaked at the last possible minute only to delay the vote . And nobody knows how. Six FBI investigation and #7 after the Dems demanded it. and they found NOTHING . And the Dems are still not satisfied. With what they drummed up on this judge . Sexual assault, drunkenness, wild parties, gang rapes, fights . And not one witness to any of it .This guy was a wild man . I want to party with that cowboy. Neanderthal ? Seems sexist ,don't you think?
