VHF licence

New boat, new radio, no licence. Does this mean I can monitor but not transmit ? There is a course in Kingston in the fall that i will take. And has anyone been charged?

Little guy in US doesn't need it. I believe it required of all "north of the fence."

Oh yes it is required in Canadian waters and a few years back I had heard they were charging people even if it was powered but not sure if that was true. I have had one for years but have not been on big water for about 7 years.

I had this same question many, many years ago when I got my first boat and started using it mainly on the lake. I was told I did not need a license and the radio did not have to be registered. If I were a freighter, that was a different story. But, yes, those of us in the US don't need a license for our VHF radios. With our lovely government, however, anything can change...

Does anyone know if you need a license for the hand held walkie talkie type radios? I got a pair of the 36 mile range ones and it seems like you need to get a license to use certain channels?

the motorola type radios do not need to be licensed however the ones that only have channel one and two like the police and emergency people us do have to be.
