be carefull when buy online  I  got  a guy  who told me  he got them the  exp  date  was done  and u cannot return them I got a  set at wallmart  for $30,,,orions 4pack  here  in ny  coast gard  approved u need 3.......

Before you buy, pick them up and check the expiration date. I have seen big retail outfits selling six months old flares.

I had a box of boat flares from 1984 in my garage.  I used them to start camp fires last summer and they worked flawlessly.  The expiration dates are BS.

It is good you test them, why save them when they are not approved and are an unnecessary hazard on your boat?

I never thought of using them to start campfires. I have a load of them to get rid off but couldnt figure out how to safely. I understand them still be good past expiration date but tell that to coast guard or other marine authority.

For whatever it's worth, it's not illegal to have expired flares on board as long as you have the unexpired flares on board as well. Nothing wrong with back ups if in the event you needed them. That was from the coast guard. I would make sure you have them labeled. Or use them for fire starters lol

It is a good idea to test a couple of old flares so you are experienced with them in an emergency. The Coast Guard has their people test them annually.

Also don't test them while on the boat incase something wrong. Give them a test on shore to make sure you know what you are doing. My step mother's cousin watched a guy strike one at a car accident and it broke off and went down his boot. Not a good situation, be careful they are not toys.

haha it was a fireman it burned through his pants instantly and fell into his boot.
