  1. TH - Welcome to the board. Where is Insula Santa? We usually run flies behind the attractors, however some guys may occassionally run a plug or spoon behind the attractor. (flasher, dodger, Spin Doctor, e-Chip etc) For myself, I like dodgers & run flies between 1.5 & 2 ft behind. (18-24 inch) The longer the lead the less action you'll have on the bait. Downspeed (speed at the bait) in the range of 2mph should be a good starting place. Tell us something about the trout and techniques used in Norway. Ever run into any Atlantic Salmon? Good Luck on the 10 Kg'r. (That's 22 Lb'rs for youse yanks...) Tom B. (LongLine)
  2. I'd put a couple drops of oil in each cylinder and turn the flywheel by hand a few times before firing her up. If you've got any fuses under the cowl, I'd make sure of good connections. I.E. no corrosion on the ends of them. Also, I'd look at the grease on the starter gear/shaft. Tom B. (LongLine)
  3. Thanx, I'll give them a try Tom B. (LongLine)
  4. You guys find any particular brand 9v battery in you probe works better in the cold water? :?: :?: I've been using the Ti Everready and find they're great as long as I stay in the 50's. Once I dip into the low-mid 40's, temp readings go nuts till I bring it up for a little while. Tom B. (LongLine)
  5. Played hookie today & launched before sunup at the Genny this morning. Clear sky & slight SE wind. Made 1 pass at river with J’s, looked behind me & saw 16 boats  so headed towards Russell in 20-25 FOW. Lots of marks in the flotsam to about ½ way. Spent some time off Russell & had a huge brown up to the boat off Russell on a Mongoose 28 (14 over 22) but blew it with the net. Headed out to 100 FOW & picked up a small colorful Brown on a Blk/Slver dodger-Fly at about 90. Very exciting screen in 85-90 FOW. Didn’t see bait clouds like that all year. Drastic temp change over 95 FOW with 100 ft of cable out. Blowback difference between 1 & 2 ½ mph took it from 44 to 62F. Back in front of the river just before noon. Some screen activity in 55 FOW but no takers. Saw a charter net a good sized king in front of CG station in the river. Met Jax & Fishinman at Launch. Nice meeting you guys. Tried to call on VHF couple of times. Oh well, hope you did better that I did. Man, water at the launch is low :!: Tom B. (LongLine)
  6. Mark, I'd like to thank you & Steve for starting this board many years ago. I agree that I'd like to see the boat name for all entrants making the leader board posted. However it is a private business & ESLO Promotions can do anything they want. If it's their way of thanking "sponsors", "supporters," "consultants", paying back charters for selling a lot of one day passes, or recognizing USCG capts., then it's their perrogative as it is a business decision. However it does look "fishy" that only those guys can get their boat names posted. Although on the other hand it is kind of "interesting" to see some charters get creamed by the recs or some charter not even making the leader board. (i.e. obviously you know a rec beat them when the boat name above them isn't listed) Tough dilemma. They want to do something for the "parties" that may or may not be listed above, yet not make it appear to the general public, that may not know better, that the derby is rigged. I'm not saying it is, but rather it could appear that way if the top 5 money winners had their boat names listed, star-ed or in colored fonts and the rest not. Another question that could be asked is how did a rec get on the leader board with no name listed? Didn't he fill out his form completely? Tom B. (LongLine)
  7. Possible that's it's noise or interference. Next time turn your engine off for about 10 seconds & see what happens to the screen. Bait usually shows up as "clouds." Tom B. (LongLine)

  9. What’s with this “pocket-saverâ€Â
  10. My top 10 j-plug colors are: Silver Silver Grn Glo LdrBk Pearl Silver Grn Glo LdrBk Black Silver Silver Silver Next time out (hopefully this weekend) will have at least one of them on a rigger. Tom B. (LongLine)
  11. Welcome Sparky. Yes they bite at night. Sometimes a better bite. Tom B. (LongLine)
  12. Gene, Pittsford Lumber carries it and will cut anything you need, but take your charge card. (It ain't cheap) Tom B. (LongLine)
  13. ND Welcome to the board. Don’t know how much luck you’ll have finding a charter with this short notice, but drop King Me a note. (Left hand side) He might be able to put you on to someone with an opening. Lots of high quality charters from Fair Haven, Oswego, Mexico way. Your time period should put you at the first third of the King Salmon run. Many caught off piers & from shore. Keep a real good eye on the weather especially if you’re serious about a little whaler on the Big-O. Lake Ontario is not the ocean but a even small chop can be a real challenge to the little guy, especially when fighting a 25 Lb'r. Browse through the site for up to date techniques. Good Luck Tom B. (LongLine)
  14. Today’s sunrise. Looked like something on fire off to the east. But it had a silver lining at sunup. Today’s fish: King, 27 & change. 9:00 AM, Off Russell. 75 over 137 FOW. Blk/slvr Howie behind a Blk/Slvr/red Glo dodger. (Love it when they hit a homemade paint job.) 2 ¼ down speed, headed N. Best I’ve done this year. (Lousy photo, knees were shaking too much.) Lost another but happy with this one. Luck to all, Tom B. (LongLine)
  15. dre, I can't advise you to mount it or not. I can only state my personal opinon which is that the company is being overly cautious. I run an 8 ft antenna on my 18 ft aluminum boat as do many other guys. When I stand, the base is at butt level and it's just on the passenger side of my boat. It is impossible on any of the boats I've seen to have the base 3 ft above every ones head. (except ragboats & the Stephen B. Roman) Tom B. (LongLine)
  16. Andre, Temporarily mount your antenna somwhere between you & your fishing partner. Try transmitting while night fishing. When you transmit observe your partner. If he lights up like like one of those Halloween skeleton costumes, then you have a problem. Unless of course you have a 100,000 watt clear channel transmitter, then I wouldn't try that and I'd go strictly by the instructions. Seriously though, Ray K didn't pay any attention to those instructions and there's nothing wrong with him. (sorry Ray, couldn't resist it) Really seriously though, just don't transmitt without the antenna attached. Tom B. (LongLine)
  17. I use the probe to find the quick temp change. Generally it then runs on the bottom of it & the other rigger runs in or on top of it. Till the next time I'm out  Tom B. (LongLine)
  18. Which is breaking? Where is it breaking? At the splice? lure? If the knots are good then something's wrong with the line. If right at the lure, could be getting cut by the fish's teeth. If someplace else the line needs replacing. How old is the line? Any line that leaves a white powder on my fingers is history - fast. Don't assume that the line you bought from the store last week is fresh line. (It may have been sitting in a store window for a couple years.) Do you snug your knots wet? Most monos/fluros dry out quickly, especially if stored in the sunlight or in a hot covered boat or side porch. Tom B. (LongLine)
  19. Agree with MissD, probably a good size king. Have had a few charge the boat & go deep. (Turn away from them and crank like crazy.) If you're ever lucky enough to hook an Atlantic, you'll know it by the aerobatics that most of them put on. Tom B. (LongLine)
  20. "oldies but goodies"...eh? hmmm...I got a few 25 yr old Honeybees... Upwelling was totally weird. Miss your pics man. What's a Fishlander Shark look like? Tom B. (LongLine)
  21. Out of the Genny at 1st light. Haven’t been out in a couple weekends. Water has definitely gone down. River low 60’s, short plume to the East. Brisk south wind. Headed towards Russell & then out to 90 FOW, just looking. Surface in close - high 40’s. Trolled out to 175FOW where surf temp was mid 60’s. Down temps unstable. Found the edge of the upwelling in 157 FOW & worked the outer edge for a while. (see other post). Apparently staging Kings were hanging out on deep side of the upwelling as caught 3 of these on an Antifreeze Howie (Green) behind a char/glo dodger. 37-45 down, approx 30 back. (This one is 16 ½ Lbs) No lamprey marks on any of them. All same shade. Quite a few seagulls swimming around just on the warmer side. I could hear a couple of other boats but couldn’t see them so guess they went way out. Tom B. (LongLine)
  22. Whenever the coastwatch site shows shades of gray or black areas, check this site out. (This satellite seems to penetrate clouds better.) http://www.glerl.noaa.gov/res/glcfs/glc ... pe=N&hr=00 Tom B. (LongLine) p.s. don't ask why I named it 8_7_07
  23. Tom - I know hindsight is always 20-20 (excluding Ray's joke down below) but I would have gone direct to Moor. They have excellent service for parts. Might cost some $ more but worth it - no frustration. There just a few more miles than sodus from your place. (Duane gets 5 stars in my book) Tom B. (LongLine)

  25. Dre - The formula for the maximum range you can talk to your buddy is approximately the sum of the square root of your antenna height plus the square root of your buddy’s antenna multiplied by 1.4. Assuming a 3db antenna and negating atmospheric conditions. Hey Ray – Pocket saver? Nice grouping on the punctuation marks. Glad to see you're finally getting the hang of them. Anyways, next time you want more range from home with the handheld, just climb up on the roof and try it. Also if you want to see the effect of atmospheric conditions, get out on the roof and try it before, during and after a thunderstorm. Tom B. (LongLine) P.s. Dre – If you out there and ever see lightening or hear a storm's coming, drop that dam antenna.
