Friday Mike and I left the creek at 5:30 and set down in 90’ right out front. We turned West and found a great screen and a great bite right off the bat. We left that water looking to look for a plan B for the Shootout if plan A failed. We trolled out to 300+ and found fish and bait all over. The water wasn’t much different in 90 than it was in 300. Temp was down 50’ when we started and the last hour of fishing, warm water started rolling in. We went to BFF weigh in with a 17lb king as our biggest. We had our opportunities for bigger fish but never landed them. Saturday We left the creek in the fog and slowly made our way to the water that was best yesterday. When we go there, the screen was dead. We immediately turned out to see if the fish were pushed out deeper from the warm water that rolled in. We found a few fish in the 140-180 zone but nothing big. We did end up throw a very sick steelhead back instead of in our box (the fish had brown sores all over both sides). We trolled out to 225 and started marking some fish and bait. We settled in there for the mid morning and boxed a good steelhead, a medium sized steelhead, two good kings and a smaller king. Late in the day, we ran into the laker water and quickly picked a good laker to upgrade our small king. At weigh in, we ended up in 7th place and won the big laker prize. Congrats to Rob, Billy, Paul, Matt and Hunter on an impressive win! Congrats to all the other winners!

Trolling without a Fish Hawk?
GAMBLER replied to FowlMood's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Cable angle is another thing to watch. If you catch a fish, look at the rigger cable and duplicate the speed that gets you the same cable angle. -

Wednesday I took a customer / friend from NH and his two buddies out for some brown trout and lake trout action. We set up in 45' of water and stayed there for the morning. We had good numbers of browns and great size. Lots of lost fish and fish falling off in the net with the exception of the rods that we were running Strike assists on. The more I run them, the more of a believer I am in them. Stinger Stingrays in Black UV Tuxedo was the best spoon by far for the morning. Divers, leacores and riggers all took fish. Saturday we wanted to find some kings. It didn't take long and the first diver that was still creeping out got smashed by a nice steelhead. We settled in 130-145 and did some kings. Late morning the guys wanted to get into some of the brown trout action. We pointed in and settled in 65' of water. The brown bite was very slow compared to Wednesday but we did pick up some good kings in there. Hawks Tackle Black Jeans and Double Jeans mags were the best two spoons, Atommik UV Grinch Meat rigs with Rigged Cutbait also produced some great kings for us. for the day.

It's the third time since i came to Sandy in 2006 that I have been checked by the DEC on the water like that. All three times, they were great and let us continue to fish. I offered to clear the lead core, divers and rigger on that side but they said that wasn't necessary and they wanted to do the check with as little interference as possible. I'm glad to see them out there.

They were good guys. We hooked up three times while they trolled along side us asking us our info.
-
USGS, US fish and wildlife, DEC and Brockport college fisheries are three that I would think could do it. A boat came out and checked it and hauled some fish over the rail. Couldn’t read the side of the boat while we were passing them. The two DEC officers that stopped us didn’t seem concerned with it.

While Brown trout fishing, we came across a gill net in 50’ of water off Lighthouse point East of Sandy. It runs north south right off the point. It is well marked with two tall Buoys with three red flags on them.

Some have been saying it was rebound the past couple of years. There are still doubters that can't adapt to challenging fishing. It's great to see it coming back!

Cool study! It was cool to catch one of these tagged lake trout. It is back swimming and hopefully it will give years of data to this study!

Good luck Brian. Without you guys, we are screwed!

This could affect the baitfish assessment on the Great Lakes. If this program is cut, you can kiss this fishery goodbye unless the states step up and run the program.

This will not be good for anyone with land near Mennonites.............

I purchased 8 of them and like them. I did have to repress the pin back in over the winter. Not a big deal. The overall quality is great. My one buddy is a machinist was impressed with them. -
Public Meeting – Lake Ontario Eastern Basin Walleye
GAMBLER replied to Pair of Jacks's topic in Walleye
It is well know that the walleye are affected by thiamine deficiency from eating alewife. The Alewife biomass has been climbing and is really high this year. Alewife population is up, therefore walleye population will decline. Another factor is the ice fishing toll. Lots of publicity of the trophy fishery has drawn a lot of guys and a lot of big breeder walleye have been plucked from the system. I would think a Slot limit would be a great option of the area. Why not protect your prime breeders? -
