It depends on where you park your trailer... If it is in a heated garage, you should be ok even now. I usually try to wait till mid April, but sometimes the bug hits me and I go earlier. And at the end of the day I just drain the block completely which really is not very difficult.

Just south of the Oregon Inlet camping , route 12 goes over a long bridge. At the south end of that bridge there is a an old section of bridge that has been turned into a fishing spot. You can cast into the current in 2 different ways. Either by using a very heavy sinker or by using a big bobber with a 2 ounce sinker under it and let the current take the bait. I have had success both ways. As for an offshore day trip, It is really touch and go. By the time you make it to the gulf stream, the engine noise has woken up the sharks and instead of fighting the fish, it is mostly a race against the sharks. the sharks usually steal whatever fish you got on your line before it reaches the boat. It is very reminiscent of the seals stealing the stripers from the line at the Race on Cape Cod. For surf fishing you should bring gear that allows you to make very long casts. The terminal tackle would be a one two rig. The propeller like thingies that gambler uses on his rigs are a very good addition. The Oregon Inlet is a maybe 10 ,15 minutes south of Kitty Hawk

Usually there are a few slips in the salmon river. Or you can go in Wrights Landing, Oswego. Quite a few people have moved from the Little Salmon to Oswego, Because from the Little Salmon to the fishing grounds it is a long distance with slow going in the Little Salmon, while out of Wrights Landing it is max 10 minutes away. On top of that, there is good security. From Rome to Oswego is about 15/ 20 minutes longer than it is to the little salmon, But you don't have to suffer through the insult of what they call "live Music" at the grilled chicken place

What I am saying is that we have to try to enable the DEC to be as effective as possible, given their obvious manpower limitations. Sometimes that means that certain rules should be eased. As an example there is speed limit enforcement. The sign says 55 , but everybody does 60 + zooming right past state troopers who do not stop them. This enables the state troopers to chase and stop the cars that do over 70 and to punish these speeders. If they had to stop all the 60 + a little bit cars , those tickets would over power the judicial system and a ton of these tickets would be thrown out of court . This would discourage the state troopers the same way the DEC officers are discouraged now.

Another way to ease the burden on the DEC Officers would be to revisit the regulations. Some of these rules are iffy. Like making flossing illegal. How many fisherman are skilled enough to successfully floss? Those experts do not need to floss to fill a creel. As for snagging salmon in the Genesee river gorge. The snaggers do have a point. These fish are about to die without any chance of successful reproduction under the falls. At least the salmon will be eaten by people who often cannot afford to eat salmon. This would lessen the pressure on the judicial system and the DEC can free up officers to be effective in other ways. Now night vision trailcams placed in parking lots and known poaching spots could be very effective, so there is a great way to enforce the law and catch perpetrators. We also have to ask ourselves if following the regulations makes us the best thing. For example: We catch a fish but we set it back because although it is of legal size it is not as big or too big for what we want and sometimes that fish we set back has become a floater left behind the boat to die while we are on our merry way. Some people would think of that as worse than snagging dying fish.

A drone or a trail camera in a tree sounds like a good idea. But.. how is a drone or a camera going to measure the length of a fish or recognize what kind of fish is being caught and what is the action radius of a drone? Never mind making it stick in court. And Gambler, NYS does not favor criminals.

I just read Gator's report about the quality of his new riggers and they sound impressive. However, I am just as impressed by the Penn electric riggers that for the past 30 years have performed with amazing accuracy and reliability. I tried the Big Jon , but felt that they were too close to the boat , the cannons , but there always are problems with the up and down button , The Scotty is too bulky for my taste and the autostop is not something I trust. But the Penns are narrow, powerful and are slow enough when stopping so as not to snap the cable . The auto stop is instantly adjustable by turning a wheel. I have four of them and enough spare parts for the next 20 years. Does anybody aside from DRLFC and me still use these? Or am I just defending something that everybody else dumped in the trash can of time? If you have any of them sitting in your barns gathering spider webs , give me shout. I am interested in taking them of your hands for a reasonable price.

There are a ton of online dealers who sell new engines online. to hang another outboard on a transom does not require a doctorate. What it does require is a cherry picker or a sturdy tree with a hoist. A one ton capacity cherry picker is less than $200 at Harbor freight. Often a new engine turns out to be cheaper than all the local repairs. This is mostly because the online dealers compete in the Florida market where there is stiff competition.

Is it complete with monitor, probe and transducer? Is the new type probe or the one with 4 batteries?
