  1. its also important to think about the type and timing of fishing as well as location. if you are mostly sport or fun fishing the longer coppers though productive may detract from the fun. If you are doing more tournament or derby fishing than the productivity is more important. also do you fish year round or early season or late season and where in the lake. these questions will set what kind of depth your more likely to target. If you dont already have it a good option might be one copper and one leadcore. lots of versatility there as well. personally i will typically only run long weighted lines during a derby. That is purely my preference for what i want from my fishing experience. i would rather do fewer rods and if i want deep stealth do a short core off a down rigger or some such. the other part has to do with boat traffic if you fish a lot in heavy traffic such as the Niagara bar than longer coppers are less conducive to maneuverability. I've not been there but if your on the east end fishing the trench area it sounds like a similar scenario
  2. I run a Honda 7.5 hp tiller as my kicker on my 19 ft sea nymph prior to that it was the kicker on my dad's 24ft trophy it pushed both boats no issue and same top end speed on both the motor is 30 year's old and still runs like a top my vote is Honda 9.9 with the 12 amp is nice piece of mind for electrical and a couple extra mph when it's an emergency and you need to get in but the smaller one will work nicely Sent from my XT1080 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  3. A very fisherman friendly launch during the season couldn't say if it's ice free right at the moment if it's not sodus and Bear Creek are both pretty close bear Creek you need a permit but you can get those at the park on Knickerbocker rd Sent from my XT1080 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  4. had a chance to find the link https://www.glerl.noaa.gov/res/glcfs/glcfs.php?lake=o&ext=sfcur&type=N&hr=39 interesting to see it as it is in the winter noticeably different than in the summer but could be due to wind or ice or other.still an excellent example of how there can be strong currents throughout the entire lake
  5. I fish out of Hughes a lot and there are defiantly strong currents there at times there is a website that has surface currents on it also does a time lapse animation of them it is amazing how much they swirl and change the down currents do the same thing often in different directions Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  6. The smell was so bad I almost just cut the line Sent from my XT1080 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  7. i caught a filleted rotting (weeks old) salmon carcass ironically in the mouth on a j-plug behind a dipsey trolling the pier heads once. have also caught a 10lb sheeps head on a j-plug and a 8 lb catfish on a j-plug in front of and in the genny respectively both while fall fishing.
  8. Wasn't sure the best forum to post this but thought i would try here I am replacing my tow vehicle this year. The new one does not have a backup camera. after having had one for the last couple years i'm not interested in going without. there are lots of aftermarket options out there. has anyone here had any practical experience with any? reviews seem limited and they never mention winter weather only rain. i would prefer to use a wireless version for easy install but am more interested in something that will last. looking for any recommendations or any models to avoid
  9. Consider a different brand or a used probe the biggest advantage it gives you is repeatability find the speed that triggers bites and it easier to repeat with a probe this is especially true with changes in direction and moving to new areas with different currents. You can learn to do the same by watching cable angle or reading your dipseys but it takes a lot more practice and experience to do it that way. One alternative is to set up a thumper rod when its running right there is an easy to see pulsing in the rod check out fish doctors website there are some good videos. Overall a probe is a good investment but it doesn’t have to be the newest model of fish hawk especially if it only for a couple trips a year Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  10. Never hurts to try a couple different set ups to determine which works best for your needs Sent from my XT1080 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  11. how much lead core? for short cores Mono is good as you still have plenty of spool capacity. For me mono is also more user friendly/forgiving in setting certain releases. with a good drag 15# mono can handle any king just fine. as the core gets longer reel capacity matters and the drag and weight of the core itself comes into play and Braid becomes the better choice and with a heavier braid you can tighten the drag a touch and get the fish in quicker within reason. if your only chasing walleye than its a different question and its a matter of what holds up to any board release the best at that point brightly colored line is nice as its easier to see for tangles especially if you have different colors on different rods.

    Cayuga CAYUGA 1st OUT

I know browns can get finicky about action I don’t spend much time in waters that have both that close to gather but I know when on Seneca when I used to pike fish it I never had a trout or salmon by catch (used small diameter black non coated steel) I don’t winter fish the boat though so by the time I’m out there now the pattern is marginally different and these days it’s lake O which the pike and browns are even less likely to be on the same troll Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

    Cayuga CAYUGA 1st OUT

Makes me wonder if a thin steel leader would still get trout and salmon? Wish I had the little boat I would make the trip and cast the shallows just for something different. Either way that is a tasty mixed bag Sent from my XT1080 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  14. That pike is a monster it could have eaten those other fish here I am ice fishing for those should just get the boat back out nice catch Sent from my XT1080 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  15. I do a lot of similar things the difference I like my leaders for rigger rods to stay around 10 feet that is because I sometimes run spoons tight to the weights especially if running deeper down in the summer on calm days that way boat movement will translate to more action and trigger some bites Sent from my XT1080 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  16. Would also have some interest both sizes are they all sg3b models? Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  17. thats the best thing i've heard in a month
  18. If I’m only using one dip set a side and I’m going deeper than 50 I like to change the setting to a 2 or even a 1 that way I get a better depth curve and it enough line out that it still gets out away from the boat that way you don’t need the kit until you go real deep Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  19. Good bait get harder to find every year Sent from my XT1080 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  20. Same one I was there late morning he said he sold out Sent from my XT1080 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  21. better than us we hit conesus in the morning and got nothing having the baitshop out of shiners didnt help.
  22. Temp is nice to pinpoint a break but far and away speed at the ball is the biggest factor the lures have to be running right I've had days where 2 tenths at the ball difference is critical does not take much current to change that the fingers have typically less current and more consistent direction than Ontario but still enough I would rather have a probe and only 10 spoons than hundreds of lures and no probe and that's after fishing many years without one on the first boat Sent from my XT1080 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  23. I use a pair of diawa wilderness for inside dipseys heavy action they work very well and not to clunky they are shorter but I am happy with them Sent from my XT1080 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  24. I have the kicker right on my transom as well the panther is the ideal option if you don’t have budget for auto pilot I had to cut mine but that’s it. On the package it tells you to bend if needed and the main motor end clamps to the steering arm so it is highly adjustable to fit as needed it takes about a second to connect and disconnect from inside the boat without having to lean out Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  25. even thinking about the launch at the chamber gets me angry its just so fundamentally wrong. I hope they dont do the long shallow grade launch like they have at Lodi thats problematic at times as well I like sampson so will try it when it re-opens
