  1. WTG Nick and Theresa At least it gives us hope that things might be starting to heat up and that "king fever" is right around the corner
  2. The thing I'm wondering is do you technology buffs ever catch any real fish or is it just the theoretical masturbation that excites you? A lot of folks were catching fish consistently long before most or all of this electronic gear was even invented primarily because they leaned HOW to fish.
  3. They are nice fish and it looks as though you had a great time getting them WTG
  4. First of all a big thank you to Jason and Theresa my great hosts for the day on the M-Arlene (Great Lakes Lure Maker boat) on Seneca Lake. I'll let Jason provide the details of the fish caught etc. when he gets the opportunity as I lost count and he and Theresa religiously kept diary details Usually I get caught up with the fishing details but today it was even more importantly about the social experience factor and another great dimension of the LOU site....that of meeting and spending quality time with people you otherwise might not have connected with. Today also underscored for me the importance of both extending and accepting opportunities that come your way. I had not personally met either Jason or Theresa before this morning. But Jason had extended the generous invitation in a posting here on LOU to join them testing out some of his lures that he manufactures on the north part of Seneca Lake (which I consider my "home territory"). I met them at 6 AM at Seneca Lake State Park where they had spent the night after fishing and field testing lures yesterday. We exchanged greetings briefly They provided me with some great coffee and we were off down the canal toward the lake. We each set up our favorite 3 rod setups each on one side of the boat. I looked over his varied selection of his Great Lakes Lures the Oakie Doakie, Keuka Wobbler, Silver Soldier and other spoons he is testing out (which looked very cool by the way). I went with my selection of Suttons and Quick Strikes etc and one of my homemade flies behind an Echip flasher on my side of the boat. Early into it I caught a nice rainbow about 4-5 pounds on the Sutton and later a nice laker on the homemade fly and others as well and the morning went pretty well for me but the afternoon the Great Lakes spoons came on strong and started kicking butt with several nice lakers and as we ended our fishing we had a quadruple. It was like a Chinese fire drill. The Great lakes Lures were truly impressive. The fishing was a lot of fun, and I think it was a mutual learning experience and it seemed very "natural" fishing with new found friends who are very competent and know what they are doing. Theresa handled the boat like a pro allowing Jason and I to "do our thing" with our equipment in the back of the boat. It was totally enjoyable chatting about things of mutual interest and I had a blast. This brings me to the main point of this post. To those of you thinking about extending an offer to someone on LOU you don't necessarily know personally but would like to fish with ....do it! To those of you who might be hesitant about accepting an offer of such from someone on here....life is short...enjoy it to the fullest....take a chance on doing something different and perhaps even out of your comfort zone...it can turn out to be a wonderful experience. This one certainly was. We didn't take pics of many of the fish but these are samples of the day. Les P.S. only the rainbow had a lamprey mark a lot of clean native lakers
  5. Great post and very nice laker At least we know there still some big hogs out there...
  6. One way to tell is if you have a fish hawk TD - put it on and run it out all the way at your usual trolling speed. Yes it does add a little weight to the line but not much when trolling and gives a pretty good estimate.
  7. on Gambler's comment. I love the king fishing as much as anyone (have fished for them since 1975) and I have tremendous respect for them as fighters as I do for stripers in the salt water environment. Diversity is the spice of life and although the humble laker is not as glamorous as the king he surely has his place in the environment as do the other species (there's nothing like atlantics and steelies doing their thing in the air). One of the best things about fishing is something akin to gambling.....you never know what you are going to get when you "pull the lever" ( or in this case throw a lure int he water)....excitement and diversity it is what makes the sport fun. Think about if the other all species weren't there and it was kings ONLY out there...would it really be as exciting and as much fun LONG TERM? I doubt it. I'm as anxious as the next guy for the kings to heat up but as Brian indicated they aren't the only game in town and never should be.
  8. you'll be happy.....and hopefully you won't have to hear any of us repeat our advice (probably worth the money spent right there) Good luck!
  9. Nice report and encouraging action out there . My hunch is that those fish suspended may be smallies because last time out I tried them too and no takers. I've caught quite a few by accident in the past (rigs and downrigers) in the 40 to 50 ft or so range suspended over whatever. I too am waiting for the action on Lake O to pick up but right now it doesn't seem like much is happening king-wise out there...
  10. On some units you have to go way into the menu options to activate it. I had to really look for it (different model though)
  11. Last time out Keuka was stuffed with fleas o matter what type of line or diameter was used. Jigging is the major option.
  12. Good report Jim and WTG on helping those guys out. A lot of people can relate to how vulnerable you can feel when the power goes and I'm sure those guys were real grateful for you helping them out.
  13. Yep....you got it straight from an expert north ender
  14. The thermocline seems to be forming and I'd say set stuff at about 35 to 55 ft now for starters. I think the bait has started to move out so I'd be looking for that too. Probably mostly spoons right now and I'd start about 30 -40 ft and work out from there. As you go deeper I'd add flasher/fly or perhaps jerk copper if you do that and are after lakers. If after lakers go with cowbells with peanut or Spin n glow just off bottom. If If landlocks, rainbows or browns use smaller spoons on downriggers and dipseys and troll off drop offs on west side especially. Good luck.
  15. First f all Berkeley Vanish is the absolute worst line let alone fluoro line I've ever seen virtually no knot strength. Switch to Seaguar fluoro (or even Vicious (inexpensive but good) and Big game 30 lb mono or Blood Run 30 lb Sea Flea and your problem should be solved.
  16. Glad to hear they are turning on now Sean. Nice healthy looking lakers too.
  17. Cool...some good eating there. The backdrop on the one pic looks almost like Rock Harbor on Cape Cod...not sure where it actually is but I sure feel like being there Of course it is always a mixed feeling because I know the salmon fishing here should start heating up any day now....
  18. A NW wind sure sucks from Sodus in terms of controlling your lines and speed...best of luck to you folks.
  19. Hi Jason, The north end sounds like a possibility Sunday. I wouldn't mind testing out some of my new (home made) trolling flies either. Send me a PM with your cell and I'll do the same. Thanks. Les Jason you have a PM
  20. Good luck Nick and Theresa....hope the bad weather has passed by you before you took off from there.
  21. I guess I should have reviewed the total article Jason I once had a printed copy of that information back in the late 70's or so and some very specific charts of the thermocline as it moved from month to month throughout the year that was given to me by one of my buddies back then. The sampling was done in the 500 ft of water and as I remember in the month of November there was a radical drop off of temp and then it was nearly a straight line from slightly below the surface during the dead of winter of 39 degree water all the way to the bottom. There are also measurements taken by the Hobart and William Smith research buoy out from Roy's at the north end but they end in the late Fall. It includes quite a few profiles including wind speed throughout the day and water temp plots (thermocline plots).
  22. I believe it supplies power to the barge if it is the one I'm thinking about.
  23. My situation happened in the early eighties and there were no actual boundary lines or signs of any kind but the real problem is that you don't even have to be very close to it to hang up your lines - just running them very deep because the huge cables go out at an extreme angle on all sides and you couldn't see them from the boat...I was running lines down well over 200 feet...that was the major part of the problem. They do have a 17 ft Boston Whaler Montauk that transports staff between the barge and the small office/lab on land in Dresden. The sense it made fishing near the barge is the fact that a lot of bait collects near it and there are HUGE fish out there and once in a while you connect with one way down deep. I fished out there for well over 40 years and have never seen anyone ticketed but I have heard them on the loud speaker.
  24. WTG and nice report. All hell will break loose tomorrow out there with the jet skis etc. so I guess I'll have to wait until "amateur weekend" is over. The channel and launch at north end will be double the zoo it usually is.
