Setting up leadcore rod
Sk8man replied to Lakertaker187's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
The Willis knot is the one I was suggesting I had forgotten the name of it.... Tx Tim. -

Launched at the north end at 8AM with my buddy Pat who had never been trout fishing (only pan fish). We started at the treatment plant and trolled south on a diagonal toward the middle. Two small dipseys with spoons on tx 44 boards, a braid rig with greenish yellow Spinny and green tinsel fly out 200 , wire rig with Wonder bread E chip flasher with glow fly out 250 and 2 riggers with spoons and sliders with spoons on each. Both the wire rig and braid rig took hits after about an hour took out drag nobody home but trolling very fast into the 2-3 ft. waves with the big motor to overcome them. Got a five pound rainbow on the small dipsey with a NK28 (orange and silver) on the TX44 board and released him unharmed in the water with pliers on hook. A couple more hits on the braid rig...nothing on the wire....took out drag then gone. We turned east and then north about a mile north of the condos and trolled up the middle toward Pelican then angled in to 140 ft and bam the 50 ft. downrigger (with Mepps Syclops and black curly tail worm) fires and he takes line and then off to the side....knew immediately good rainbow....handed the rod to Pat and he started reeling...the bow got into the braid rig and had to be hand lined up it and then it got bound in the braid so had to net it in order to get to the hook. Got him in boat took quick pics and released him (27 inches 7.1 lb). He had seemed pretty lively when released but then went belly up so after waiting to see if he would make it it was obvious that he was finished so we pulled the lines and went back for him. We ended up giving him to some guys at the ramp that had been fishing all day....I think for pan fish...they were pretty happy.

Setting up leadcore rod
Sk8man replied to Lakertaker187's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
It is also possible to go deeper than the 50 ft or so if you add in line weights (sinkers) to the leadcore and depending on speed less leadcore can be used as well with weight to get down but it is harder to tell where your lure is running. -
Setting up leadcore rod
Sk8man replied to Lakertaker187's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
It is possible if the swivel is very tiny (# 8 or10 Spro power swivel for example) if it goes through the rod tip and eyes but the problem is tying the leadcore side of it because the knot itself won't go through most eyes, it is almost impossible to get the leadcore through the eyelet of the barrel to tie it) and most barrel swivels won't either if you go bigger sort of a catch 22....IF you are only going to use a short leader say about 6 inches shorter than your rod length you can use a larger barrel as long as you aren't expecting it to come through the tip...it is still pretty clumsy as far as the knot though...lead core is notthe most fun stuff to tie. Another thing with barrels isthat often the little ones will clear the tip and eyes and then hang up on the level wind guide...for reels like the Penns, and older Diawa's for example you can widen the aperture of the line guide to make it work but with some of the newer reels with narrower and reinforced apertures it is not possible (or advisable). -
Setting up leadcore rod
Sk8man replied to Lakertaker187's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
I use 27 lb test leadcore with 30 lb Big Game mono for backing and it works fine. I use a17 -20 lb fluoro leader of various lengths but use 10 or12 lb in the Spring prior to the flea fest. It is the one thing I don't use a Spro barrel swivel for in between. I thread the mono up through a 2 1/2 to 3 inch section of the the sheathing of the leadcore (lead removed from the section first) and tie a half hitch knot in it to prevent it from slipping back through. -
Setting up leadcore rod

The downrigger rod should work OK but depending on how much leadcore you intend to use (say 10 colors = 300ft plus backing) you will need some capacity on the REEL All you need is 18 or 27 lb leadcore not the heavier type which takes up more space but doesn't give you any significant sinking ability. -
irondequoit bay - newport marina - fishing gear stolen
Sk8man replied to jjxray's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Hope you recover your stuff....it is a real violation ...last year I had a $200 camera taken off my boat while I was getting my vehicle/trailer in the parking lot (fishing solo)...pretty brazen...just wish I could have seen who it was they would have been swimming for sure.... -

You mentioned that you live fairly nearby so Tim's point is well taken too. The silvers are better eating if you plan to keep fish and are usually readily available in the shallows in the Spring and when the water temps and wind are favorable later on sometimes as well. The matures that are coming into the creek to spawn in the Fall are already starting to "decompose" and although kings are fighters regardless they won't be as much fun at that stage as a rule as the non-spawners that seem to have a lot more"zip" to them. Pier fishing (from shore with light tackle)) for them may be a little different in that they aren't working against the weight of the boat. You may also encounter some big browns that come in close to shore after the eggs etc if the water flow is right for it.

For trolling the wall area Mark (Skipper 19) is right on target...and it won't cost you an arm and a leg for equipment. Do make sure you have VERY sturdy rod holders though as they are essential.

If the interference is from the kicker motor I'd try using resistor spark plugs in it and see if it helps. The transducer should be mounted as far away as possible from any turbulence from either engine or that produced by the hull itself. It was unclear to me whether you were referring to electrical interference or interference with the transducer signal creating a "clutter" appearance on the screen. The power cable and transducer cable should be separated as much as possible too to prevent interference especially if the wire shielding is compromised in some way. I would think that if that were the problem though it would be there regardless of which motor is on. You might also consider getting a transducer board (plastic piece that fastens to the transom and to which you mount your transducer (s)which allows you to reposition the location and angle of the transducer at will without drilling into your transom again.

Those fish were driving me nuts yesterday and today trying to tell what they were ....nothing like curiosity yes on the pickerel Mike ...and I used to get some real hog pike through the ice near Canoga way back when...those pickerel have been prevalent there though...even back in the late fifties when my folks rented a cottage summers near the park. My dad and I used to hammer them with red and white daredevils....right off the docks and in a boat. At least you fished it bud. Les

Was sitting at home after having some coffee figured that since the wind wasn't too bad I'd give the rainbows another shot today.launched at north end about 10:30 AM and dropped a couple down at 50 and 60 with spoons and sliders with spoons and a wire rig with green/chrome Spinny and blue-green tinsel fly at 200 ft out over 100ft. Nothing for awhile but marked a bunch of fish 50-65 ft down over110 and again at 170...wouldn't hit and were modest marks so I became curious and went back through a couple times...had some follows no hits...just wanted to know what they were so I took spoons off and put different sizes of stickbaits to see if I could get them to hit...to see what they were. Each pass I got one to hit....all small lakers that were suspended within the thermocline well out of their preferred temp. OK solved that....out of there....decided to scrap one downrigger and go with a braid rig with flasher and fly blue flasher and green fly. The wire rig then fired (about 80 ft down over 234?) and ended up 5-6 lb bow released unharmed by shaking the treble out with pliers while he was still in the water and he took off. trolled for what seemed like days but was hours - one small laker and two small rainbows. Reached Cooks Point and turned around and bam the wire rig got nailed....4 lb rainbow...swallowed the treble...had hard time getting out and he "bought the farm" so I threw him in the cooler. Decided to put the Seth Greens in (3 of them)....trolled for a couple hours and only caught one small rainbow about15 inches...released unharmed. Quit at 6 PM and headed for launch ramp. While taking my boat out I noticed a kid about10 or 12 fishing in the little pond near the ramp and I said to him " Would you like a rainbow trout?" He said "Wow...sure" so I had him take my pic with the fish so he'd feel he did something for it....good day... everyone happy...also took a pic out the back of the boat as I ended up the day.

Thanks for the video exploring this topic. Along the lines of what Nemesis said over the years I've talked with a number of DEC people and biologists and folks who are very experienced fish "handlers" and the one thing that all have said is never place your fingers or hands in or near the gill area as it can be easily damaged (yet perhaps unseen at the time) leading to later mortality of the fish. The example here is concerning what appears to be a mature Chinook (King) salmon which will die shortly anyway but with other species such as trout (or Atlantics for example) this factor becomes much more important. Additionally, any time a fish is physically handled the protective slime on the outer surface of their skin may be removed or compromised potentially leading to fungal or bacterial infections later on. For fish other than mature kings it seems best to release them in ways that minimize or eliminate actual physical handling (or netting) such as the Boga Grip type technique mentioned.

Nice going Dave....just don't mention to ERABBIT how you customize your lures....I got accused of having "girly lures"
