  1. Hey Nick I'll bet you really impressed them at the meeting the next day with your watch dangling from your tie Couldn't resist it.....
  2. Yes I had some yesterday on downrigger mono, and leadcore at the connections but it wasn't real bad yet and seemed to be worse on the deeper presentations. I trolled Canandaigua both east and west sides yesterday mainly north of the pump house to about a little south of Danny's place and changed lures and presentation every few minutes without a touch from 8:30 AM - 1:30PM and got soaked in the process. Marked mostly suspended bait in 59-73 ft of water but not many fish....marked nothing out deep at all (went to 250ish)
  3. The diameter of the wire is a factor in your decision if it is normal 30 lb 7 strand you can tie it but if it is much thicker diameter you will find tying difficult to impossible depending on just how thick it is. I use crimps despite all the comments on here about breakage etc. I've been doing it for well over40 years without any substantial problems but usually on wire heavier than 30lb. My current wire rigs (7 strand 30 lb) are crimped and then I hot glued over the terminal connection with clear hot glue so I can still see inside to inspect for potential breakage....thus far no problems. This prevents fraying of the wire at the terminus as well as limiting the potential "wiggle" at the terminus potentially creating a bend or break. I haven't ordered crimps in a long time but Jann"s Tackle used to have them in various sizes. I've always used the single wire crimp just a slight bit larger than the wire diameter but there are also double wire crimps that allow you to separate the wire from itself. I think it is primarily a preference issue. When I crimp I crimp it in the center with a couple or three depressions but not too hard to compromise the wire and don't crimp on the very ends of the crimp so that the wire has a little freedom but doesn't work against the edge of the crimp itself which can cause breakage. Hope that helps....I know many folks may have very different ideas about it but it has worked for me for so long I don't even question it any longer.
  4. Which part were you talking about that was twice your size Ray?
  5. Best of luck to you Chris. Your last sentence sure sums it up....I've thought about it many times having grown up in this area. It is especially in my mind as the fishing season rolls on and I see folks coming from the far reaches of Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Ohio etc. and other states and driving many hours just to get here to do some fishing. I used to do a lot of photography and I would meet many tourists coming here to the Finger Lakes region and Lake Ontario and they would say "man....you are really lucky to live here...this place is one of the most beautiful spots I've ever seen" I often wonder when I hear the folks on here from different places and their long drives etc. "Would I be that committed to the sport that I love?" I think the answer is "yes" but I'm not totally sure...I do maintain a healthy respect for those people who go out of their way to take part in this great sport of ours.....especially considering gas prices etc. these days....it's not easy.
  6. I beg to differ on the point I made and you are correct about the rest. Japanese General officers were interviewed quite a while after the war and they confirmed that the above was a factor in their decision not to invade and they subsequently went with a "ruse" attack on the Asleutian Islands....as a distraction. I know you just seem to want to argue with me as on a previous post so this is my last comment on it.
  7. Matt, Great job on the boat and neat selection for a name.....you summed up boat ownership pretty well too Best of luck with it and the fishing.
  8. You're welcome pardner. Best of luck this season with the fishing. Les
  9. On the Finger lakes Seth Green rigs (if set up right) will out fish most other equipment or methods perhaps with the exception of someone who knows how to pull copper real well or effectively jig in the case of lakers. In most cases it isn't NECESSARY to use flurocarbon line on them either especially if wire is your main line....a little stretch can actually help in that case, and because you are running deep most of the time the effect of line visability is a minimal factor. Once the thermocline sets up running jug rigs run well behind the boat can be real productive on rainbows and browns.
  10. Yeah poor Ed...first he loses a big brown and now no doughnuts.....what's next? geez hope that doesn't fall off too
  11. "leave the Vanish on the store shelf......" The point is well taken. I experimented with Vanish for awhile on both Seth Green rigs and downriggers etc. and no matter which knot I used it broke right at the knot (despite lubrication etc.). My hunch is that when looked at under a microscope the line itself may be irregular (not symetrically round) as well as being "brittle" and when these two things are combined at the knot it serves as a "cutting" force as the lines at the break appear more like a cut than a "break" to me. I know the better fluoro leader material is expensive but I think the quality control in its production appears to be much better than the cheap fluoro line. If you add up the loss of a fish and the five or six dollar lure (or worse yet attractor and lure) it seems worth the money to buy the "good stuff" OR stay with a brand of mono that you know works.
  12. That too Nick....it is inconceivable that our government has become this incompetent not to properly safeguard ( at least encrypt) information of this nature and scope. We are talking extensive detailed service records of millions of our citizens. The real scarey part is that with that very specific information foreign governments can make very accurate calculations about specific aspects of our military as well as the potential military "preparedness" or "readiness" of our civilian population as well as many other important considerations I won't mention publicly. After WWII it was disclosed that the Japanese had discussed the potential invasion the US but they believed it would be impossible because they thought so many Americans had guns in their homes and would be prepared to use them against them.....so there is considerable value in keeping actual information out of the hands of our enemies and this applies to Russia and China in today's world.
  13. This could be much scarier than credit related stuff. Those records are much more extensive and relate to much more than credit records and especially in the hands a of a foreign government....(security clearance related info etc.)
  14. Sweet! They should be packing on the pounds by late Summer/early Fall...
  15. They allow too much stretch of a good hookup.
  16. Happy Birthday Nick! I'll give ya a break and not make any pink jokes today
  17. I know this is not fishing related but I also know there are fellow veterans on this site. Apparently the VA records have been hacked into by various governments (Suspected China and Russia among others)....including SS numbers etc. we may be potentially screwed already. http://www.legion.org/security/216119/foreign-hackers-steal-va-data
  18. I think Marty was just joking with Ed on that post above....I don't think he was messing with you.
  19. Sean, I think this is the guy Andy is talking about: http://www.lakeontariounited.com/fishing-hunting/index.php/topic/36167-forsale-custom-rod-holders/?hl=holders
  20. Great footage. It leaves me wondering if trolling speeds should be slower or leads to fly should be adjusted to slow it down. Looks as though they have a hard time actually nailing the fly
  21. That's great.... and even better that you get her into fishing! Good to see kids actually getting out and doing stuff instead of staring at the TV or video games.
  22. Try going the the main home page and in the SEARCH block at the top type in Troutman87
  23. Go get em Ed! Maybe you'll connect again with that Loch Ness monster that got away recently.... These weather guys are really ticking me off....They say thunder storms and then nothing happens....if I didn't get "spooked" it would happen sure as h....guess" living on the edge" out there has made me too conservative now... Have a great day out on the pond folks.
