To clarify: They still stock the Army Corp lakes in PA with walleye fingerlings. Some of these do end up in the Chemung water shed.

My brother gets them that big. He just waits until they are calm and sprays some wasp killer in the hole. Leaves it all intact. Creeps me out because I keep waiting for the bald face b a s a r t d s to come after me. Hornet King (YouTube) uses a bee suit and a shop vac. Fire scatters them. When I use non poisonous means, I just use free and clear detergent and water in a sprayer. I prefer to just go after them with copious amounts of wasp killer. This is the time of year that the new kings and queens will be leaving the nest so it is a good time to get after them. I do like the idea of filming it whatever you decide.

How do you get the "Fishy" taste out of trout?
BSmaster replied to Speedy's topic in Fish & Game Recipes
Like others stated, I don't keep trout/salmon from Lake O or the fingers. Exception is probably a false run rainbow in December or an atlantic. My experience is that the fish are edible but not tasty. When I do get a laker, I usually give it to my mom who makes a chowder. I save the head for my Chinese friend. If there are any eggs I use them for fish bait. (Like others have said) I always recommend bleeding them and I also think it makes a difference to cool them down on ice as soon as possible. Remove the skin and the fatty layer beneath the skin and the lateral line. No belly meat. I do not think lakers freeze well so try to eat fresh as possible. Simplest recipe is to submerge filets in a baking dish with normal italian dressing (400-450 - 30 min). This is the one I recommend to novice fish cookers. Dry brine might be the second easiest. Any rub on inside of the fish. Put cut sides together and leave in the fridge overnight in a bag or a dish. The salt will bring the water out of the fish and then reabsorb it with the spices. Rinse off the rub, pat dry and coat lightly with spices of you choice. Then you can bake, grill, or smoke it. 3rd easiest is to chunk it up and poach in steeping water containing celery and salt. dip the cooked chunks in garlic butter and imagine you are at red lobster. My overall recommendation is to let it go and go buy some wild caught sockeye or pink salmon. As others have said the fish don't taste as good since alewives became the primary forage fish. Catch and cook a trout from Erie and you will understand. I have a hard time believing anything that is puking up smelt in the boat is going to taste bad - I wasn't wrong. They taste really good. -
Interesting, I thought it was catch and immediately release. This sounds like catch, fumble for bump board, find phone, get camera ready, get control of fish, snap pic, a quick "yeah!" and let it go hopefully not too far away from the nest so the little fish haven't cleaned it out. At least with MLF, it is a big solid boat which won't be dragged, they get penalized if the fish hits the deck, a quick weigh in on the boat and it is back in the water quickly. I am indifferent to it. I am not and do not foresee ever being a tourney guy so I shouldn't judge. If the DEC made an exception than there must be (maybe, probably) some money implications. They know more than an average fisherman such as myself so its ok by me - no joke. I think it is the hypocrisy that bothers me.

James Haynes Emeritus-Professor [email protected] I haven't talked to him since I graduated (93). He changed the whole way I looked at pollution. He knows and if he doesn't know, I doubt anybody does. Send him an e-mail. I remember Lake O was a passion of his. I am pretty sure he will respond if he has time. I respect everyone and their input. I believe there are many variables happening simultaneously - enough where cause and effect is a just an educated opinion and not facts.

I was just telling someone this morning how things change. In the 80s, 30#rs were average. Now, that's a trophy. Small to mid size streams were hot in the beginning of OCT and totally done by November. Now, 20lbs is a good fish and it heats up later in OCT and fresh salmon are caught into the following year. Water temps and precipitation. I remember snow and having to wear a winter coat and water everywhere. I have witnessed some people wading with cargo pants because its so warm and creeks are crystal clear. I can't comment on the lake fishing but definitely the stream fishing is different. I can go into how hunting has changed too... but I don't feel like typing that much.

I asked the DEC many many moons ago about putting striped hybrids in Conesus to help improve the panfish/walleye populations and the reasons not to were twofold. Stripers migrate or wander and were likely to leave and the bigger reason was that the state would have to purchase from another state's hatchery and they prefer not to do that. I think at some point forcing things is going to be too big of an uphill battle. Bodies of water will have to be managed by what does well in them and not what people want to be in them.

I watched the Bigwaters podcast with the LEWT and another tournament director and they were absolutely drained emotionally. I don't participate but I do appreciate the amount of effort that goes into these events. I hope things improve for them. I know a lot of suggestions come out of Monday couch quarterbacks but I was thinking that it could be not as insulting to require a calculator of weight as well. (Length) (Girth) = expected weight. Make it a rule in the beginning of the season that if the fish falls outside the accepted range that it needs to be inspected. I realize they can add girth but it seems hard to believe that they could add more than half a pound without making the fish look grotesque. You can add another limit of girth per length. It may not solve the problem but like I said it isn't insulting a fisherman as much as cutting the fish open. Because if you are suspicious and the fish turns out is legal you hurt your tourny but if it is agreed upon that any fish that falls outside the accepted fields gets inspected then there is no singling out of any angler. Just problem solving. No hate mail please.

Spinner bait fishing on hemlock will get you chains and bass. soft plastic (texas rig) works well once you find the right size, color, tail. Cranks work great too but usually later in the summer. Biggest issue with plastics is the large amount of voracious small gills that destroy em. fish deeper with drop shot too. The bigger bass follow the bait schools. But there is little bass pressure on Hemlock so there are willing takers and they are good sized. Honeoye is fun on a week day. We don't count bass. We count doubles. A lot of fun. Good luck

Reminds me of the first brookie I caught. 15inches in a culvert hole in Allegheny county. You could cross this creek without getting your sneakers wet. Mine was lighter color than the one pictured above and my first words were - what the h e l l is a laker doing here? Then I looked closer and the square tail - I never saw one that big before without all the color so I instantly went laker. Nice fish. BTW - I have seen natural reproduction in the creek that crosses the road on the way into the boat launch.

I have caught a couple slob white perch in Ohio. Even though they are called perch they are not like yellow perch at all.

My worst season ever but not because of deer numbers. No noticeable second rut (which IMO is good for herd health) and good afternoon browse near bedding areas. I had no heavy snow to knock down golden rods so the deer had areas that they could bed in that in recent years they didn't have cover. I am in the south eastern part of 8X. I can say that neighbors who put the time in to make sure there was an excellent food source for afternoon did fine.

Bass boats on the River
BSmaster replied to Prof T's topic in St. Lawrence River Fishing Reports - 1000 Islands Fishing
I have waited to post on this topic. Kind of went sideways. I have never seen, other than stream fisherman shouldn't keep steelhead argument, fisherman so divided as bass fisherman. Live bait versus artificial and it goes on from there. I don't think electronics catch fish. I think fisherman catch fish. I also think for me, personally, I like to keep it simple. I fish with people with electronics and I will be honest. sometimes it is nice to find fish quicker. Other times I am bored and annoyed of just searching with the graph. But with that said I don't like shrimp either but I don't give a rat's ass if you do. That is how I feel about these really expensive rigs. Not my money. Speaking of money, How many businesses in the thousand Islands region cares about what equipment they have? The community is better off having them there. I loved that river as a kid. Last two times I was there, I didn't feel it. Zebra muscles have changed it a lot. Makes me happy when I see Kevin and Prof T posting successful trips out. If I offended you, I sincerely apologize, I know your heart is in the right place. I just don't agree with your assessment. MLF is the only tourny fish show I watch and it is because of the format. -
Off topic - deep sea fishing out of Glouster MA
BSmaster replied to Bike and Boat's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
I only remember all day trips which were 8hrs. I looked into Yankee Fleet but I went with Clipper Fleet. I think he folded. The slots were killing his business. You would catch haddock and cod all day long but only end up with a handful of keepers. Most were an inch too short. It was still more fun than shopping with my wife. Good luck. It's the east wind you have to worry about if you got a weak stomach. -
Seneca (rumor)greenridge power plant got approved
BSmaster replied to Roys Boys's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
I need more information. I don't grab my pitchfork and get my panties all bunched up over concern which may be warranted but not necessarily of sky falling proportions. I don't remember these issues when it was a coal plant. I do remember the fishing. Checks and balances - something our governments aren't very good at. Example - Walmart gets to develop wetlands and no one else does. Think about why... IDK any of the FL lake's organizations but they should be focused on human waste being discharged into the lake. This is my "whataboutism" for today. -
I was on vacation in old forge about 10 years ago and they had a rack in one of the touristy type stores and it had 3 inch ends polished white tail antlers for $12. They were from younger age class bucks too. Made me go hmmmm.... If you can find something Yuppies want you can make a decent living. They will pay $7.50 for a boat cleat in the kayak section while we pay $2 for the same cleat in the marine section. A friend of mine was doing antler art and he was making handles for grill utensils etc. If you have a lot of antlers of the same side and same general size you can make chandeliers. Most people I know do nothing with them - even the better ones.

I have never seen a yote that big. I hear they are getting more aggressive but not in my area.., I guess keep shooting at them and they stay in their own lane. I have May pics of them following Does that are ready to drop. This year I did a sit and deer were spooked and I was wondering how I got busted with the wind in my favor. Pretty soon the deer were running back and forth in the brush with a Yote chasing them. I was hoping the deer would bust out in the field so I could get a shot but never happened. Going at them next month with the call - meat pile has been quiet all season so I figure they have an easier (and safer) meal somewhere else.

I would feel more comfortable if they did a pilot program with a few bodies of water that are different from one another with at least one significant attribute and then track changes. Do perch etc. and see what correlates well with the changes. If this approach is solid then expand to the entire state.

Is this a response to ice fisherman? The Crappie changes they made before I got behind but I am not sure what good this is going to do. I am worried about unintended consequences. Doesn't matter much to me. I usually keep 20-30. But more bluegill doesn't mean bigger bluegill.
