  1. I eat deer... I will try to chew slow as to not trigger Bill's driveway alarm. Seriously good luck everyone - already got my meat pile but no action. I think they have safer sources right now.
  2. The two floods in the 70s created huge holes very deep in most cases in the Chemung watershed. The flood control reservoirs has reduced high water and the DEC very seldom lets property owners fortify their shoreline so water is spreading out and filling in those deeper holes. I remember the hole above Patterson bridge in Corning was like a lake and you couldn't see bottom. Now I see geese standing in the middle of it in the summer. Coincidentally, My best Walleye catching years are from wet years with big storms and not dry like this year.
  3. The fawns can visit her in your freezer.
  4. Mine went off 2 days after I shot my doe. Figure that one out...
  5. Bob, I am in Steuben County. Some holes remain the same but where I caught them last year all the structure left with the high water. Even the bass relocated. I do not know much about Susky and how much change it goes thru with high water but rivers can change. I thought I saw that there are good numbers of young fish up in Vestal. I have always found river walleye fishing challenging but rewarding as well.
  6. I have a Barnett vengeance. Inverted limbs. dampeners so it is not too loud but still louder than my compound. Stock scope is very reliable. I have killed 2 deer over 40 yards. I have wounded one deer at 30 yards. The tiniest of twigs do not show up in the scope. All the deer I have missed or wounded have been because of twigs I didn't see. This would be the same for a compound but you get tunnel vision with a scope sometimes so you need to be aware before you see deer where your scenario is. The two I killed over 40 yards were open mowed fields and the bad outcomes were not. pros Crossbow allows you to hunt tucked in like turkey hunting. Con - re-cocking is hard to do without alerting every deer in the area. Other than that hunting is hunting. You still have to make good decisions.
  7. On a sunny day I would say wait. It won't hurt a thing. Precipitation days I try to evaluate the situation. What kind of blood? both sides? What does the hair look like? Any smell? If you are going to rely on the canine I guess it doesn't matter. But I would be very surprised if that deer isn't piled up just out of sight. I had a doe go 400 yards on a solid hit which somehow only took out 1 lung but I evaluated everything after 10 minutes and knew she was dead just very surprised she made it that far. But I hate to give advice when I have no skin in the game. Do what you think is best. I am interested more in the pics to come.
  8. Deer heart recipe Cook the heart whole in boiling water or pressure cooker. Slice 1/4 inch slices across the grain remove all the internal lining and any of the outer that's narly looking. Fry in a pan (iron skillet best) with butter and copious amounts of basil (you can add pepper and garlic salt etc...) If you do it right, it will be dry and tender and taste delicious. My brother and I use to ask for it for our birthday dinner. The reason not to eat is that it is very high in bad cholesterol. Sucks to get old. I had to stop eating it about 5 years ago. I use to be able to eat like Joey Chestnut.
  9. Better flows makes it harder for snatchers too which hopefully discourages them.
  10. Tell the campground owner to go to the dollar general and get some cheap yet strong perfume and cologne and soak a rag and put that in the dumpster. Use the bears' strongest sense against him/her. If that doesn't work then only a human intervention will. Regarding the fellow making poor decisions... IDK. Not much of a trophy if it isn't a fair chase. I have a saying. "I will consider that when I am hungry but thankfully I am not hungry right now."
  11. I would go with Keuka but probably for the same reason Justin would go with Skaneateles (Familiarity)
  12. Looks like a week from today will see a picture of Tommy.
  13. I don't know if it was such a bad thing. If he was polite about it I am ok with how he did it. I hate when you are respectful and ask permission and catch an earful from the landowner for what somebody else did.
  14. I keep wanting to chime in and then I chicken out... I must have that PC pathogen. Flashback 20 years - All I can say is when I go fishing I don't fish for lakers. But if I catch one, I am ok with it. (There is an analogy in there)
  15. 6 weeks from now those water sources will be important. They get a lot of their water intake from their diet in the summer. I have noticed a big change in deer movement this year but not because of the drought but because of the lack of vegetation because of the drought. I am hoping we get some soaking rains soon. Where I was afraid to drive my truck last year the earth is cracked this year.
  16. IDK how to feel about this. I can see the good and the bad aspects.
  17. Just across border in PA is Strouse's Taxidermy. I haven't been there in a while because haven't harvested anything for the wall in a long time. He use to do a lot of bear and I imagine he still does.
  18. Ohio = Walleye. I hear its pretty good.

Venison hotdogs and walleye - no better way to make friends.

Good job Kevin. I have noticed over the years that your family eats pretty good.
  21. I like this quote. Very well said Bob.
  22. You get a mix because bass eat like people. Some wolf it down and some nibble. gamakatsu circle hooks work well. I think you should be using a #2 - not sure why you are missing hook sets maybe move up one size. You can use a wire hook as well. The advantage here is that you can let swallowed hooks remain and the fish will either break it down or it will pass thru. It is better to cut than yank if you are catch and releasing. I know you are looking for an explanation for your questions - I don't really know. BTW the live bait thing gets even harder when you add walleye into the mix. And about live bait vs artificial. I believe there is a time and place for both. I have seen a lot of bass deformed from 9 hook point lures and that's why mine are like brand new. I would rather catch the fish with one hook point if I am going to release it. Cranks usually out fish live bait in the fall so I will use them - don't want to be a hypocrite.
