water chestnut the seeds get a spike on them and it can and will go through a sandal or sneaker unfortunately i know this the hard way.

Looks like you might be dealing with an aggressive patch of curly‑leaf pondweed or Eurasian watermilfoil, especially with roots that long. I’ve been down that road and found that local conservation offices can help confirm the ID from a quick photo. On a lighter note, messing with all that lake growth pushed me to focus more on my indoor setup, and indoor plant delivery was a nice break from the chaos outside.
