I used to run copper, but I hate bird's nests so I moved from copper to weighted steel. And the mess that copper often produces does not happen anymore. Still, whether it is 500 copper or 500 steel, it is still 500 feet to be reeled in, which everybody always tries to pass it on to somebody else.

Now that I solo fish most of the time, there is nobody to pass it off to anymore ,so now I mostly stopped using it.

In order to get back to using it again I started checking out on electric reels and I settled on a battery operated ( no electric wires dangling around) Electric Penn Fathom Reel. I'm going deep sea fishing in the Pacific off the Costa Rica coast so I used that as an excuse to buy it. They are for sale in the USA for $1070 before taxes and an extra battery goes for $119.  But if you buy it online from Germany they cost only $650 delivered to your house within a week which makes it way more reasonable.

Does anybody use these reels for copper? If so, what is your experience and opinion?

Cornelius,

I run long coppers as well and yes, they are a chore to bring in at times. I still use them but have also been adding weight to shorter copper rods to get them deeper without the added length. I use the Torpedo Shark and Cuda. I can get to 100’ with a 300’ copper and a Cuda weight depending on conditions and trolling speed.  You would have to run a 500’ copper to get that deep at 2.5 mph. Smart Troll helps dial it in.

It is supposed to be fun and you can catch plenty of fish without. Unless you are a charter that needs the lines, why?

As to the “Why”, there is no reason why. Tradition maybe, or something I always wanted to do. I suspect it is mostly a logical next step after having used a battery powered drill on a Penn 345 and forever thinking about removing the irritant part from fishing with copper.

The biggest fish of the day always comes on copper for us, but as I said when we spoke this week, long coppers get run during tournaments. The rest of the time, if it's even in the water, and it usually isn't, we end up trying to get somebody else to grab the rod when it goes off. I guess if I was thirty rather than sixty it might be different.

Might not, too lol.

Shattered, what size weight are you running, and how far up? I have them up to 12 oz, but was uncertain whether I really wanted to attach them to the copper itself, and putting them above it then letting out even more line seems counterproductive.
