Alternative options for Downrigger lake trout
finsntins replied to Grizzly8's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Laker fishing definitely not my thing but unfortunately have to fish for them from time to time and other dragging bells through the mud on riggers you can run mag divers on wire with a dodger and spin-n-glow and get down in that range and they will produce and usually produce bigger fish.if you can get the diver to tick bottom, that’s even better.any white/green or the yellow with orange dot dodger, I think they are like 8” and a big spin-n-glow will work, gambler, here on the lou site sells everything you need to catch lakers. -

Downrigher lines crossing
LongLine replied to Rtrucking40's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
1 - Eyelets could be bent or twisted 2 - At that depth, turns could be too short 3 - At that depth, leads could be too long. You didn't say if you switched sides with the weights. Easy way to tell if you've entered an area with a different current is with a constant RPM, watch your down speed. -

I had this problem with my Herbie weights I was using blacks releases on my cables and it was happening frequently when currents were bad I went to offshore and Scotty pinch pad releases and attached them to the back of the weight. Problem solved -

Downrigher lines crossing
GAMBLER replied to Rtrucking40's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
If your boat is crabbing bad and there is current on top of it, you can cross rigger cables letting a rigger down on the side the other cable is leaning to. -
Alternative options for Downrigger lake trout
GAMBLER replied to Grizzly8's topic in Open Lake Discussion
You can run a wire thumper rig. Use a three way swivel, a 1lb weight and your cowbells. Run a 3-4' dropper for the 1lb weight. Let it out until you hit bottom. Let it settle and let it out to bump again. dragging the weight will get you more hits. Fighting lakers this way is not fun but very productive. I highly recommend Hammerhead Cowbells and Gambler Rigs! -

Maybe you switched the position of the sharks or you accidentally bent something on one of them. Another solution would be getting rid of the sharks (I hate them) and switch to torpedos -

Thanks for the info -
So in 10 years on the lake I’ve never crossed downrigger cables til last weekend. A few times the cables caught each other and every time the lures tangled. We were fishing 110 and 135 down on each rigger most of the weekend with the 12lb sharks I’ve always used. I don’t no if currents were just that bad but it was happing time after time! I have a 9’ beam and even tried kicking both booms out the the side with no luck. Maybe gotta try heavier weights but I can’t figure out why all of the sudden!

too much??.. anyone want both for free?.... come get them, hate to throw them away. They sell for $100+ these days... -
I have one manual Downrigger. Don't have room on the other side. what are my options outside a rigger that can get my lures down to 120-140 feet? I have a wire rod and another mono rod. i want to run cowbells because I've had success with the one rigger. Should I use a three way swivel? Bottom bouncing weights? can I get a reccomendation on best practice for my options on how to functionally get that lure down? Looking for recommendations on lures, weights, rods, lines, etc. I appreciate the advice!

Reccomended probe for depth, temp, speed
GAMBLER replied to Grizzly8's topic in Open Lake Discussion
I have a fish Hawk and smart troll. Smart Troll is more versatile. I Run both systems together. Smart troll probes on my divers and the fish hawk on my riggers. IF I had to choose, I would go with the Smart troll system because it is more versatile. -
