  1. OKAY here it is dont get mad! Paul came to me in a pro am a few years ago when copper was catching on and told me he was going to throw his copper setup in the lake. I asked him if he was running it like lead core. He said yep! I simply told him its not lead core, its a downrigger! The next weekend he got mad at me cause he caught a brown trout on his copper and it cost him the lead on day 1 at Sodus! I had run copper for quite some time at that point. It was nice cause I could buy 600ft of it at Dicks in Ithaca for 15.00 boy do I miss those days! So there you have it the big Secret!! Ice out any day now!!!!! Brian
  2. Everyone is entitled to there opinion. Thats what makes the world go around.
  3. http://sports.espn.go.com/outdoors/salt ... id=4975762 I cant tell you guys how important it is to stand and make yourself heard! We are going to have to fight for what we believe in.
  4. Sorry, I should have been more clear. You need to be registered in a mandatory drug testing program. This link should help get you started. http://www.apcadrugtesting.com/ It doesnt mean you will be tested just that you could be called anytime to take one. Thats what the CG wants to see.
  5. The way I understand it the mate does not need a TWIC, but you do need the Drug test card. My father not only mates for me but another captain in Oswego and this is what he has been told by the CG. He has always had his drug card. It should only cost you around $50 for this. Good Luck in your search! Brian
  6. THought this had some relavance: DEC releases Galloo findings TWO TURBINES CUT: Agency says layout would threaten bird species By NANCY MADSEN TIMES STAFF WRITER THURSDAY, MARCH 4, 2010 The conclusion of the state environmental quality review process has led developers to cut two turbines from the plan for Galloo Island Wind Farm. The state Department of Environmental Conservation, which has been the lead agency on the review, released its findings Wednesday. Those findings included the elimination of two turbines to preserve habitat for the upland sandpiper, a state-listed threatened species. That process leaves the project with 82 turbines and a nameplate capacity of 246 megawatts. "In DEC's judgment, as set out earlier in these findings, avian impacts have been mitigated or avoided to the maximum extent practicable," wrote Jack A. Nasca, chief of energy projects and management. "The same applies to impacts to other coastal resources such as scenic qualities." The findings pave the way for DEC to make a determination on eight permit approvals, some in conjunction with other agencies. DEC concluded that the greatest possible effects of the wind farm are the change in the view from the mainland and the possibility of bird and bat deaths. The department determined that the layout would result in a loss of habitat that supports state-listed threatened or endangered grassland bird species, particularly the short-eared owl, Northern harrier and upland sandpiper. In addition to the two turbines that are removed from the plan, four other turbines are next to the grassland area. To mitigate the loss of 58 acres of that habitat, the developer will purchase 250 acres of suitable habitat on the mainland to replace it. As part of the requirements of the state incidental take permit, DEC placed restrictions on construction activities, required the developer to mow every three years after nesting season and called for a control program for pale swallowwort which already has been submitted. If state-listed threatened or endangered species are killed, DEC may require additional studies and operational controls, including turbine shutdown. About two-tenths of an acre of forest wetlands and 1.8 acres of land adjacent to DEC-regulated wetlands will be filled permanently. To make up for that harm, the developer will create a half-acre of wetland and 3.65 acres of protected forestland on an adjacent area. Though the project is at least 5.6 miles from the mainland, the department noted the project is visible from a wide swath of shore and many historically and culturally sensitive locations. DEC concurred with the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation on several possibilities for mitigating those changed viewsheds. They include funding improved access and interpretation at Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site, renovation of Pickering Beach Museum and Stone Hospital at Madison Barracks in Sackets Harbor, additional amenities and signs at Robert G. Wehle State Park in Henderson and upgraded signs at Westcott Beach State Park's scenic overlook on Route 3. The environmental review process began in April 2008, when DEC wrested lead agency status from the town of Hounsfield Planning Board. After the developer Upstate NY Power Corp. released a draft environmental impact statement, DEC required additional bird and bat studies. The developer submitted the final environmental impact statement Dec. 23. The town of Hounsfield Planning Board conditionally approved the site plan for the project Jan. 6. This is not enough!! We need to put some MAJOR pressure on the DEC to do there job or explain to us why they have come up with these findings! This should be a big question at ALL STATE OF THE LAKE MEETINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We need to show them that we are paying attetion to what they are doing! Brian
  7. ReelPower- I dont think we are trying to attack you, just pointing out that we have had a Thread on this issue for awhile now and its a big issue for us here in NY. It is very sad that any state would allow these in the Great Lakes, but do a little research and I am sure you would change your tune in how you feel. I am in the Environmental engineering field myself, Air Quality to be exact so I deal with air emissions on a daily basis. CO, NOx, SO2, particulate, all the above. I see nothing green about a Wind turbine. The process in which they will build these is going to do some serious damage to the lake bed, stir up all the ugly ducklings from the past that have silted over by mother nature. There are communitys that get there water from the lake. I wonder if they will still be able to after construction. There are 1200 gal of oil in each one, what happens when it leaks? It seems it is unproven technology in an open water situation. There are to many unanswered questions that make this project no sense at all.... Oh and by the way wind power will cost you more money in your monthly bill. Savings at what cost and who's math??? Capt. Brian Garrett Tall Tails Charters
  8. I would think your Hauler would be able to help you with this. He must have a Broker at the border who helps him get his equip thru. I have no expierence with a boat but I have hauled fish across the border a fair amount with my old job. We had a broker that helped us get our product thru all the inspections. Good Luck with it! Also you may want to try this site, as it is nothing but very serious boaters from all over. www.thehulltruth.com Brian
  9. The answer is YES!! Its like any other knot, should be checked frequently and just retied every so often. Brian
  10. I can tell you they are still ice fishing there! The perch are biting thru the ice! It is still early yet. I would look for river access somewhere at this point if you want to get out on the lake.
  11. Kingsalmon22 you have a pm. As for the rest of you April cant get here fast enough!!
  12. Mono backing is fine on anything less then 300ft as you will have a tough time getting enough backing on your reel. The haywire twist is only used to connect copper to copper or copper to spro swivel. Figure out what works for you and stick to it just check all your connections OFTEN and you should be fine.
  13. Its only March!!!! Thats right Paul dont forget it! Oh and go back to fishing your copper like lead core see how that works for you! You know what Rick even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in awhile! It was the right price!!!!
  14. Dont listen to Paul he has been sniffing duck feathers all winter! We have good fishing in the summer Kings are inside 200 depending on temp. All the Lake trout spots are just a hair west of the plant just inside 200ft. Feel free to PM anytime during the season I will let you know whats goin on!
  15. And whistles fellas as well as batterys with the experation date on them!!!!!
  16. I have 2 Low profile cannon downrigger swivel bases. $40.00 each If they have to ship buyer pays shipping. Otherwise they are located in Cortland, NY.
  17. It will be nice to see the county take it over!!!!
  18. There was a News story this am in Syracuse that all the people that had reservations at the parks scheduled for closure where cancelled and all money returned. Seems like a done deal without listening or discussions. I am sure they will put gates with locks up I know they have a gate at Wilson state park I am sure it is locked. It will be a legal issue to use them, as well as insurance liabilty. Very Sad Day
  19. Now is the time to contact your local State rep!!!!
  20. I will call you!!!! I got the guy for you. My dad fishes with him all the time and He is the Best 3 time Redfish champ!!!! and reasonable rates to boot!
  21. I recieved this from Dave Turner of Oswego County a few days ago and I wanted to pass it along. It seems the Oswego County Legislature is looking at the turbine ban in the lake just like Jefferson County. Gentlemen: The resolution to NYS stating our opposition to windturbines will be on the agenda of the Oswego county legislature when they meet at 2:00 PM on March 11th. Persons who desire to be heard on this matter should plan to attend the meeting and sign-in on the sheet that references items on the agenda of the day. Please pass this on to those who care about this issue. Dave -- David Turner, Director Comm. Dev., Tourism & Planning Oswego County Office Bldg. 46 E. Bridge St. Oswego, NY
  22. Most of the time in July and early August the coated cable rigger is the hottest rigger for me. The explanation could be that it is fishing like braid but not catching fleas......
