A nice 15 pounder. So it went on with plenty of light hits,mostly on the free sliders.but only the big steelheads hit those hard enough for the hooks to set.Around 11 we had to bring the planer boards in because of the wave action and we ran the copper and the lead just from the sides,which made for the mother of all knots and while we tried to undo the mess the copper got around the prop and stopped the engine.So I went for a swim with my plyers and solved that problem. This trip was not uneventful but in spite of the troubles we had a fantastic time.I think I will be back next Friday,unless Rochester heats up. Cornelis. ====================

Walmart batteries will give you a 2 year warranty.That is about their life expectancy.They are junk. I tried them and although I kept them inside on wood with a trickle charger over the winter,they crapped out in a little over 2 years Right next to walmart in Henrietta on 391 Clay road there is an Interstate battery dealer.You can get cosmetically blemished Interstate batteries with interstate warranty for about 30 dollars less than regular interstate batteries.This makes them the same price as Walmart batteries but a much higher quality and warranty.They are open until 5 or 5.30 five days a week.Just give them a call at 359-3150 to make sure that they have what you need because their stock has a very high turn over.

At least their concept of cost is closer to reality than the current wind mill plans on the southern shores. They clearly state that building these structures is affordable in 12 meters,roughly 36 feet,but unaffordable in 60 meters,180 feet. Around the southern side of the lake the plans are for structures in 150 of water. Or are we on the USA side just being misled and will the plans for out generators really turn out to be in 40 feet of water??

This weekend I was an observer at the Pro-Am out of Wilson.The boat I was on is called "Spoonfed". It was great to be on this rig,even only as a spectator.The captain,crew and rig worked together like a very well oiled machine.They got their limit,but four fish had to be put back because of their size.Even so they ended up 6th out of a very large amateur field.Besides,they caught the biggest steelhead of the tournament. The pro crews were very lucky that the Spoonfed crew had decided to just go amateur for this competition.I am fully convinced that if they had joined the PROs they would have been even more on their toes (if that is possible) and they would have kicked some of the bigger boat crews a few notches down. Spoonfed captain and crew,thank you very much for allowing me to share and learn from your rich experience and please do come back next year even though it sucks that the price for biggest steelhead dissappeared together with a nuclear sponsor. See you guys next year!!

This Saturday I was lucky enough to be an observer on the "Spoonfed" fishing the Pro-Am derby out of Wilson.The Spoonfed captain is a nice and very experienced fisher man,while captain and crew are a very well organized and highly disciplined team who, together with their very well set up rig, are a very hard act to beat.It reminded me of my naval recon days 40 years ago. As luck would have it they caught their 9 fish but 4 were under sized.Still coming in 6th in a very large field is no mean feat! Thank you Captain and crew for not only allowing me on board,but also for freely giving information and tips. While fishing, a south-western breeze picked up and became brisk during the morning.While this wind picked up,so did the temperature at the ball,it went up about 6 degrees.Where we were marking fish before,the screen turned empty and I saw some boats, that had earlier fished roughly in the same area ,moving farther eastward. The captains comment was,that the fish do not like these temperatures and had moved.Then it struck me.We were on the same coordinates,but not in the same water.The water column containing the fish,had been pushed by the western winds and the Niagara river current.Relative to their environment the fish had not moved,instead their environment had moved. My first thought was. If only Garmin could have it's GPS show us temperature and water movement.Maybe they can. Could it be that this is how the salmon slowly travels east during the summer months? I can just see all that food rich water coming out of the big meat grinder, we call the Niagara Falls, attracting the salmon in winter so they congregate around its outflow and in early spring as shallow lake Eerie warms up gathering the fish around the Niagara river mouth even more.Now later on this Eerie water becomes too warm and the salmon stay suspended in their comfort zone with their bait and slowly this comfort zone travels east and thus arrives in the eastern parts. Maybe this migration is for a large part a water movement,carrying both hunter and prey.Of course the lake warms up at the same time because of the outflow of other much smaller rivers and the sun. Does this make sense or am I chasing windmills?Captain Vince suggests that instincts pull the fish away from the Niagara to their spawning grounds.
