  1. Not trying to be a smart azz but if these mature kings are out there someplace in numbers WHERE are they.in the lake? The guys on the north shore don't seem to be banging them and not on the south shore either or in the east or west basin (in the numbers in the past anyway the bar etc. I think it unlikely that they are all piled up out in the middle....regardless of temps etc. I will be very surprised if the streams see big runs of matures this year.....but as has been noted the immature fish seem strong so far anyway offering hope for the near future. P.S. I honestly hope I'm wrong on this one.
  2. Just another take on this but I'm wondering if something major happened to a couple of the previous year classes whether weather wise or other stuff such that they are showing up in very poor numbers now. There have been reports all over the place that few if any fish are being marked as in years past. I know this won't be a popular comment but I also wonder about the cumulative effects of fishing pressure all around the lake now that many more folks on both sides of the pond have "dialed in" and are much more effective than in years past because of better understanding of the areas fished, improvements in equipment and technology, and increased effectiveness of the harvesting methods. Although Ontario is a big lake and there are a lot of fish in it....kings are very heavily targeted by many people and this is not an infinite resource folks despite what we all might wish to believe. This is also not meant to be "accusatory" in any way of us sports fishermen, charters etc. just something to think about as a possibility when trying to figure out what is going on out there.....the picture is very different that it was a couple years ago.
  3. Welcome! and best of luck to you guys out there. The folks on this website are second to none as far as generosity of information and fishing knowledge. You'll be a "happy camper" Have a great season. Les
  4. I guess my talk on it after a few times out this season is that the kings of the past just aren't out there period now. I think DEC better get going on increasing the stocking or the next few years will be dismal because whatever happened to the year classes that didn't show in numbers may happen to these juveniles as well..
  5. Ed and another for getting up the courage for reading the instructions
  6. Ah OK I wasn't sure and was going to say one or the other and the "golden" tipped me toward carp they might be homely but they are fighters and are fun
  7. Great report Jay. Glad you had some action.....was it good ole Mr./Ms. Carp at the end?
  8. Great photo Sean I too was unaware that they could have that many cubs at a time....usually a couple. Very cool and Carey did a great job with the photo. Best regards bud.
  9. If you use Gamblers general strategy together with the other info (cowbells and peanut or Spin-n-glow) or the flasher fly approach near bottom it is as close to a guarantee as you will get in fishing.
  10. Using Fish ID is usually less accurate on most finders and often identifies irrelevant objects debris or anything with a detectable signal as fish. On the Lowrance it should be displaying fish as "arches" or if fish are moving "lines". If the fish are at the outer edges of the cone angle they may appear as partial "arches" or lines. When jigging and boat is relatively stationary arches may change to diagonal lines going after your jig. In the pic below there was a significant chop on the water at the extreme top of it shown as turbulence, the massive blob is bait, the "arches at bottom and in top portion are fish. The dark lines going through are downriggers.
  11. Zack and Keith are certainly "go to" guys for those bodies of water Kevin so have your buddy contact them...it will accelerate the learning curve for him. They are indeed tough lakes to consistently fish.
  12. Nice report and results Nautitroller! Good luck with the trip and the rebuild Nick!
  13. If it is light weight it is probably not the one I suggested....probably a stinger as they are usually lighter.
  14. #6 (80 lb test) SPRO swivel with #5 duo lock snap at the terminus and a #8 (50lbtest) for inline connection.
  15. I've used Sea Flee for the past two seasons and it works pretty well but has a lot of stretch to it but again if you run through using ANYTHING with real dense fleas they will get on it to some degree. It is tough to evaluate because the density varies tremendously throughout the lake and the water column. There is no "foolproof" line that will be completely flealess at those densities. The fact that some folks report little or no fleas reflects this fact rather than any one line being "flea proof".
  16. NK's usually have the NK marking at the front (top narrow part) of the spoon....I don't see it in the pic....maybe the angle but it looks more like one of the generic blank spoons that Cabela's used to sell in the magnum size possibly and doctored up with a glow ladder and spray painted.
  17. Looks like Sheila was giving you lessons Dave if she got the fish (or were you being a "gentleman" ?) Nice work! As far as the kings go I'm really starting to believe that Vince Pierleoni's views about the need for more stocking of kings is the correct one. They seem few and far between this year and even fewer than last year and compared with 2012 not even close. I hope DEC is keeping an open mind and looking closely at what is happening out there this year.
  18. I'd like to get involved next year...tow vehicle problems kept me from it this year. a big to all participants...great event and great folks involved in it.
  19. Rod Hogs info is right on the money
  20. one for each of you
  21. I have no idea regarding the actual physical impact of the fleas on fish in the ecosystem....maybe someone else may have data on that (if it exists)?
  22. As above they can coat anything really if the density of them is great enough....leadcore isn't immune to this either nor are even the anti-flea lines (e.g. Flea Flicker and SeaFlee). They help but especially at any connection points (e.g. running fluoro leaders,at swivels and snaps etc.) they will gather fleas if the density is very heavy. The flea density is not a CONSTANT...they vary from place to place in the lake and from depth to depth in the water column and seemingly from day to day sometimes. This is why it is about impossible to evaluate whether one line or method is better than another because the density is always unknown and variable. Here are the main culprits: http://www.nyis.info/index.php?action=invasive_detail&id=35 http://www.caudata.org/daphnia/
  23. Seneca is usually a neat alternative to Lake O. but depends on the wind velocity too Seneca can be a bear sometimes too. Sampson is a real good choice for fishing a lot of different areas and sounds as though you had the lakers pegged pretty well
  24. Yes Jeff and we did real great on your rig last year too didn't we? Hope you're having a good season bud.
  25. Gator gave you some good scoop on Honeoye and BSmaster hit on a legitimate concern as far as the boat traffic situation...I would add especially at night to that. There are a lot of heavy "partiers" on the lake and a lot are out there at night going back and forth going to cottages or just screwing around and often at high speed. Caution is advised. As Gator mentioned some of the bigger fish are caught at night and there are a lot of big large mouth in there especially in the Spring just as walleye season starts up (in shallows catch and release because of closed season). If your friend has a dock you just wait until about a half hour before dark and cast Rapala like lures ( Bombers, Renegades, Rebels etc about 4 inches long) off the dock. The largemouths will hammer them until about 1/2 to 1 hr after dark usually and then the walleyes come in (as long as the wind isn't too strong....if it is real choppy they won't come to play). In summer the lake goes through some drastic changes as mentioned above (very significant algae blooms etc.) and in addition the weed growth is very rapid and extreme often clogging up the trolling lanes so that you have to look for "paths" largely up the middle of the lake (about18 ft of water or so). Worm harnesses are often effective when trolled all during the season (excluding the ice ).The deepest spot is near the middle-south (out from Log Cabin Point on the east side across diagonally from California Ranch (west side) and is 30 ft deep and despite what might be thought....during the summer it seems devoid of life (probably because of reduced oxygen levels). The perch are often difficult to find in numbers and size and best time seems to be ice fishing but the spots are a long hike from the available entry points (unless yo have access to the cottage then) and happen to be located near one of them). The nematoads seem to be present in the gills and sunnys especially in summer but as gator noted there are some HUGE panfish in the lake and you cull through them for fish without the parasites (not viewed to be harmful to people by the way just a bit on the ugly side) There are some real decent walleyes in the lake but the most frequently caught ones are about the minimum 15 inch size to about 22 inches or so. Most are caught at night but sometime right in the bright sun trolling as well....pretty unpredictable sometimes and very elusive to those who don't know or understand the lake peculiarities. Also of note Spring/Fall Crappie fishing can be exceptional if you can locate them and they are fished just as you are used to doing Kevin (bobber etc.)
