Is a fish hawk TD worth it for the price as an intro temp device?

I can't answer whether it is worth the price as that is an individual finances judgment   I will say that they can be handy for some things such as telling the temp and depth that coppers or leadcores are actually running. I have used one on someone elses boat when they lost their Fish Hawk probe and when a Subtroll stopped working on another guys boat as I carry it with me "just in case". I t can also be used to find the thermocline initially when running Seth Green rigs or downriggers  if you don't have another temp device. They are very compact, light, and easy to use but I also put an additional  safety clip on mine as the one that comes with it is in my view a bit flimsy (although I have never had a problem with it).

another gismo to play with . I got one from e bay for 2/3 of the price . tells how much blow back I got on the riggers tells where my dipsy  diver runs , lead cores run . and you can find the temp brake is if you don't have a  probe to use

I'd say yes it's worth it. But you have to periodically check, so I put it on it's own rod. You could attach it to a downrigger cable too, send down and then back up. 

 

I used one before I got my Smart Troll system. When I was finished using it, I sold it for a decent price online, so I'd say it worked out well.

 

Knowing temperature is a key issue on the lake. A lot of people fish in areas not knowing if the temp is bad or good, and waste the better half of a morning trying to figure out where to be.  The TD will help you avoid that and make better use of your time.

By the way I think Smart Troll is making a similar type recording probe. Best to check their website.

Thanks guys all good info gunna keep my eye out for a fairly cheap one I learned last year how big of a price of the puzzle temp is and I can tell that with me transitioning from Seth green rig fishing to down riggers and dypsies I'm going to have to pay much closer attention to temp!

Just be aware that the TD has a lithium?.. battery and it is non replaceable. When the battery is done...it is done. I don't think there is a way of opening it without compromising it's water intrusion integrity.

I think Mark makes a real good point . I will say that the battery seems to be pretty long lived so far though (about 5 years so far)

Les is right, it is long life. I ve had mine about 5 years. Still works.
