Charter boat insurance

Recommended Posts

Any charter captains know where I can get charter insurance for my 1988 Thompson?  I cannot locate a company that will insure an older boat.  Also, what about random drug testing for charter captains--is that really happening up here or just another governmental way of making money from us??

The requirement related to random testing is that you are enrolled in a random program if  you are an active captain....it's up to you to be enrolled and carry proof of enrollment in a random consortium that meets CFR 46 and 49.

From an insurance standpoint you will need a recent survey of your vessel most likely.

My first recommendation is to join the Lake Ontario Charter Boat Association... https://lakeontariocharterboatassociation.com/sign-up/

Charter Lakes is the preferred insurance company of the Great Lakes charter fleet https://www.charterlakes.com/

And Maritime Consortium for random drug testing program https://www.drugfreevessel.com/

Join LOCBA and we can can you discounts to both of these companies.

You are getting great advice.  Join a charter boat association - the benefits far out way the cost of the dues.  Join a drug consortium as well which can save you from thousands in potential fines from not being in a random test program.  I haven’t found any insurance to beat Gallagher Charter Lakes either.  Doesn’t pay to not do it right.

The boat survey is a good idea;  anyone know of a surveyor near the Cape Vincent area?

Message Brian Garrett on this forum - his User Name is Tall Tails - he can provide a SAMs accredited survey.
