Rolmops; Did the boat have a blue canvas? Yes. Actually a few boats broke away from the pack around that time and they all hauled @$$ to make it to the 500 FOW area. Last week I caught a steelhead with the CRAA tag in 300 feet of water in that area. I hope that they can figure out some of the migration patterns. It is good to hear that you did well there

It took a while to get away from the cold water that started at 12 feet but I found some nice breaks where 50 degrees was anywhere between 45 and 80 feet so that is where I set up. A few boats that had been fishing farther inside and one that was quite close to me in the 50 to 70 foot range went way out to what I think must have been 500 feet ,but I just did 8 knots on the way out there when I found lots of fish and bait. I set up there with spin doctors and spoons.The spoons were useless,but the spin doctors and flies were busy all the time specially on the dipsy divers which gave me a lot of big hits , a few seconds of fighting but they mostly popped loose. ( one of these days I will stop using snubbers) On a 10 color leadcore with a coho setup I caught the only king of the day, it was about 8 inches long, but very feisty. I was thinking that I probably fed that one a lot of pellets when it was in the cage.All 7 cohos all came on spin doctors and flies and so did the the laker. At the end of the day the DEC people were at the the I-Bay entrance and they weighed the 2 Cohos that I brought back ) One was 15 and the other 14 pounds. A very nice day out indeed. The DEC guys told me that they are hiring people again, mostly to work in the hatcheries Cornelis.

I run a 19 foot Sylvan.Concerning the Otterboats running like crap,try to tie the knot in a slightly different spot so the angle of the otter boat keel pulls a bit more outward. I sometimes run 500 copper and 10 colors leadcore on each side and they still work great. As for tiller motor, I run a 1964 9.5 evinrude kicker ,but I changed it to remote control,which you can do to almost any tiller outboard. Respectfully, Cornelis.

When I go solo (almost all the time) I try to put out the otter boats and the dipsy diver rods (both) but often without any spoons or flies. I do this to stabilize the boat and make it run a steady course. the dipsies are empty in order to stay legal. I find that this really helps in running a straight line when I am fighting a fish or fixing a rod. Does anybody else use this or a similar technique to run a straight course?

The better swivels on the market are the Spro and the Sempra. They are smaller,but they have bearings and they are very strong for their seize. Another thing is to allow the fish to run and let himself tire a bit before bringing him in. "Setting" the hook with 30 some pounds on the other end trying to go the other way will break lines.

You should try to use a snubber,this will cushion the first impact of a hit,and you can also set the dipsy just a bit looser. What kind of swivels are you using? You remind me of what is was like for me when I first started trolling Lake Ontario.

There the steelhead were just hitting all the time all the way out to 140 feet,at which point we got another king.Later we picked up a few lakers. If it is lakers that you are after,you will do well with leadcore. The trick is in trolling live mooneyes (sawbellies) at speeds of 1.6 to 1.9 mph with 10 colors out. At that speed you will reach depths of close to 90 feet. just speed up and slow down in roughly that range.It has always worked for me. Around this time of year they are probably in around a hundred feet of water.

The torpedo wire that I got a little while ago had one very good spool,but another one had a few problems.I contacted the sales rep and he was genuinely interested in what exactly the problem was. He traced it back to a combination of a power failure and a new girl working the machine at the same time. He also gave me another spool to replace the one that had some problems. The only thing that comes to mind is the double planers that you use.Because of the added weight they run a bit deeper and in addition they pull more than twice as hard. With all due respect to your opinions,the RFA is not exactly a sports fisherman organisation.It is much more a front of commercial fishing interests which is using the terms "sports and recreational" as a front to hide behind while protecting industrial interests and destroying what is left over of our natural fishing stocks in the name of profit. If large corporations like Walmart donate money to organizations that try to save some of our fishing stocks for our children (much like the DEC does in NY) it can only be applauded. So please do not judge the gift too quickly. Destroying what is left over after all the over fishing and pollution is not smart. Trying to save it is smart. Here is something that I would like to add. California is trying a system that has proven itself in Polynesia for hundreds of years. By closing certain areas for extended time periods,the stocks there completely rebound and then they start spilling over in the surrounding areas where the stocks also rebound. In Polynesia,which is very dependent on its fishery, it was and still is one of the responsibilities of the village headman to chose which areas to open and close for fishing. This system has successfully maintained healthy stock around the islands.

It went between 64 and 44 with the probe at 110 down. We set up and caught a few 2 year olds and then to make my son feel better,I dropped one line down to 145 feet down and went laker hunting.Thank god for lakers.They are very dependable and we caught a very nice 15 pounder. After this we trolled north and east out to 500 feet ,but it was just covering empty space and wasted time.We picked up our lines and set a course for the area in front of Slaters creek,but on the way there in about 200 feet the screen started to show some big fish that were on top of big bait balls so we dropped our lines there and the thermocline was pretty steady at 90 feet until we hit all sorts of currents and breaks at different depths,probably the out flow of the Genny. There the fun started. They started hitting the dipsy with the fly,the copper with a mag glow lemon ice and the glow frog. All were in the low twenty pound range and all were quite red. I think that the staging has started and from here on they will just get closer in. the steel head was a 7 pounder. Around twelve thirty by sheer luck I turned on channel 2 for some weather info and there was a severe thunder storm warning with a storm coming from the west, so that cut our day short. But they are there and they are staging. ====================

I second that. So now that it has become legal to run 3 rods,we will see how much more fishing gear will be sold to fishermen who try to run solo with 3 rods and loose a lot of gear because of bird's nests and other small disasters because they have to do too many things all at once. Oh well, now I can at least legally make a mess while trying to do too many things at once.

Those are your conclusions not mine. But I would not at all be amazed if you are right. It is a bit far reaching to claim that this 3 rod rule impacts the entire fresh water fishery of New York State.
