  1. justtracy i think you said it far more eloquently than I did I was limited to shore fishing for many years and saw many unethicle fisherman. However I also met many very skilled fisherman who can and do do as much or more for the fishery than many lake fisherman. I dont think they should be punished because of some people lack of respect for regs. I have seen boat fisherman keep illegal fish and out of season fish and over there limit just because someone has the money to buy the bigger toy doesnt guarentee there a better person
  2. so i'm all for catch and release and sportsmanship. when i was a kid snagging was legal for salmon in the fall. i was a lifter after that for years and have since learned far better habits and now rarely stream fish because i'm lazy and hate crowds. that being said is stocking really that terrible of a thing? rainbows are not native to seneca and are only there because of stocking in the 20s. If stocking imporves the population it could increase noteriety which will increase fishing hours and thereby bring more money into local economys and put more pressure on to preserve the fishery which is really the ultimate goal. That being said lake trout stocking is being reduced to prevent stunting so maybe that money should be used to stock rainbows? heck we could go big picture and hope the increased popularity leads to a hatchery (my wishful thinking) which could have far reaching benefits. if we increase the number of sportsman fishing it ultimatly improves the area and limits the ability of lifters and poachers. As a side note ecosystems are dynamic things that change regularly so it should be expected that populations may have to to supplimented to keep consistent numbers and on the other side they may have to be occasionaly culled like lake trout in keuka. i'm not trying to support those that lift snag or herd and I certainly am not trying to bash anyone here . I am however tying to offer a different perspective and say that banner trib fishing can if properly managed actully be a long term benefit.
  3. there all over the corn fields around here i think they are confused i see flocks passing each other going in oppisit directions
  4. had to tried stoped at the chamber in geneva and decided it wouldnt be worth the drive south the wind was due north so we fished out of there hoping there might be some browns or maybe a bow in the mud plumes form the creeks. fishing was cold and all we caught was one big pickeral couldnt find more than 1 degree gemp difference and i dont know how many trout use those creeks to begain with oh well the boat ran nice andi got all the equipment ready for the year. maybe the weather will play nice and my next trip out can be Lake O
  5. any one go out this morning? is the west side fisable the wind here is light but that doesnt mean anything for the wind at watkins
  6. no lies there i was out with my step son at the north end a couple years ago anchored on the dropoff trying to jig and use bait. wind turned south and within a few mins waves were starting to crash over the bow. we pulled anchor and got out quick was a great leason to teach him to always keep on eye on whats going on around you.
  7. i hear you on the iffy weather my last check put it at NW 12 mph i know if its west enough i can fish the west side no problem but if it turns north i gotta go. I only get a chance to get out evey other weekend so i'm going one way or the other if the water is completely unfishable i will go icefishing i'm just sick of drilling holes. I always have a back up plan but sometimes real time reports are the best intellegence to have. we'll have to see what its like tomarrow at noon when i'm ready to leave and i'll pick which gear to load than.
  8. attempting to go out sunday afternoon little worried about the wind turning north is there anyone going sunday am that can give a wave report? its a decent drive so if its rough i'd love to know ahead of time and i'll fish the north end
  9. if your willing to drive a bit north go to the genny the piers extend well out into the lake and you can get trout there from late fall all through winter and into spring some days are better than others but theres always a chance and you can hit i bay or a stream on the way home
  10. gotta love the small outboard i got my fluids and gonna get it out this weekend on seneca wind permitting driveway is thwad enought for the suv i can almost smell the grilled landlock
  11. got me excited i'll be getting the boat and gear ready this week and weather permitting heading out next saturday my favorite time of year to fish now till the lake trout derby
  12. go with the home made great on the budget and very satisfying when it works if you dont find something else for reels go on ebay and look for some used penn level winds there is a ton of them on there and they are heavy enough for board lines if you use power pro for the line you can fit pleanty on the reel get the line through ebay as well or walmart.com my first mast (experimental was a tinner walled conduit with a wood dowel inside for streanght and an eye bolt at the top worked for a single mast but than i started to fish with a partner a little more and wanted to double up
  13. I have homemade boards and mast. the mast is a 7 foot piece of gavinized 3/4 inch water pipe supported by a doubled up floor board bolted across the front of my boat. for reels i have two old penn 209s i got off of ebay for under 20 bucks each i use 150# power pro for line. I set that up 3 seasons ago and everything is still working well. the boards were homemade hand me downs that my father used back in the 80s. two cedar planks with threaded rods holding them togather pull pleanty hard enough to run lead core i even have a 300 copper that I can run pretty easily. Pm me if you like I have some pics i can dig up and send you.
  14. thats funny right there “El Apetito de Muerte†sounds like a teenager
  15. thats a good deal for the polars i have a set of 5 that i've been using for 17 years i have done minimal maintence and they still work perfect. I got a buddy that is just getting into icefishing i'm gonna send him this and hope he takes a look
  16. dont let go of the power agar handle when it hits the bottom of the ice and the throttle sticks looks funny as hell with the motor and handle spinning at high speed with the blade jammed in the ice. that agar is currently coated with 15 years of dust in my fathers garage.
  17. split it 7 and 3 but on the 7 put in a leangth of mono at 1 color on the short one and 4 colors on the long one that way you can run a rod at 1 color 3 colors 4 colors or 7 colors off a board great way to get a lot of range on a limited number of rigs espicially in a smaller boat. you can than use either off a rigger as well or even attach a torpedo weight at the mono section. I love my short cores and hated my 10 color though i did not have the right reel for it. I am probably the minority but i run a very short leader usually 8-10 feet only works very well for me started longer but didnt get the hits leadcore pulses and waves up and down with waves speed changes and turns longer leaders mute this that erractic action can trigger a lot of striks especially on seneca in the sprig or in the mornings or if you find fish over open water. real common to find bait up high and the short cores can catch fish
  18. short lead cores are my favorite rods i use them for browns in the spring and they catch most of my fish running spoons. i fish seneca the rest of the year and the short cores produce fish year round you can also run them as a SWR on a rigger if fish are real deep but i have better luck running them near the surface
  19. i once talked to a guy back in the 2 rod per person days he would bring his wife the summer she was pregnant he would run 2 extra rod not sure the DEC would buy it but it made me chuckle
  20. ifishy

    Sabiki rigs

ive used them off of docks for panfish in summer lots of catches lots of tangles though. might be better using them vertical through the ice though might have to try one this weekend if i do i'll let you know if it works
  21. fantastic idea just gotta make sure the wife doesnt see the video and find out what it all really costs she always conviently forgets about the collected over a lifetime part. might be fun to start a thread here to post the vidoes to compare collections help pass the time till sping
  22. the previous link is pretty good depending on where you go you can get a sense by where other people set up as well at least gives you some ideas dont be afraid to shy away from the crowd though just use them for reference
  23. 18 1/2 is no youngster for a cat at that kind of age just like people the chance for problems gets more and more. I say feed them the fish get the taste for wild game in them so they keep the mice down unless there like my last one who just got fat and lazy but that was because he ate everything. Only cat i know who would steal french fries from people and eat eggs in the morning if he could get his paws on them
  24. i used to give my cats fish everytime i kept some for the table they loved it. never had thyroid problems i will say though i used to work in a vet hospital and cats with thyroid issues are more common than you would think. the meds work pretty well and at least with animal meds they are much cheaper than the ones for humans even though its the exact same medicine
