What an amazing afternoon for my kid!  After not seeing a deer opening day, I was happy when he asked if we could hunt this afternoon.  The cams were blowing up with activity so we went.  Walking in, we bumped a stud buck and a doe bedded right behind the tower we hunted yesterday.  We got settled in to a blow down with a great view of the hard woods.  15 minutes in, a 6 point comes strolling through the woods to our south.  Brayden gets on the buck and has to wait minutes for a clear shot.  Once he gets a clear shot, he squeezes the trigger and click!  WTF!  The buck caught me handing him the .308 and trotted off.  He was bummed but I told him, things happen for a reason.  Maybe he will get a crack at a bigger buck.  20 minutes later, he points north through the hard woods.  Here comes a bigger buck.  I stopped him and Brayden didn’t have a clear shot.  He starts walking nose to the ground again and I stopped him again.  At this point I can’t see him at all.  Brayden fires and the buck turns north and runs 50 yds piling up in a depression in the woods.  This is Brayden’s first buck and he made a great 95 yd shot across the woods.

Really not too windy this afternoon. Glad I made it out here. Possibly a great sit if this wind dies down.

Let's just hope I picked the right stand to be in.

Let me know what you think about this topic. On State Forest land, you can get a camping permit during hunting season. Good news if that is your thing but I have seen the other side of the equation. At Sonyea there are groups that set up camp in the same spot every year and then have a misguided thought of what “their hunting spots” are. This has resulted in some conflicts, one of which I was witness to as a deer had passed by two parties each taking shots at it. The angst of another hunter being close to “their” spot resulted in an angry barrage of over 100 rounds (illegal 30 shot clips) in succession. This was during COVID and there was nobody coming if the altercation went really stupid. Thankfully I was at the other end of the property and represented the first and last time I hunted there. Saturday I was in the process of assisting my brother getting his deer out of the woods. The deer was way back in on state forest land and easier to drag the deer downhill than the 3/4 mile uphill. On way into the property I came into contact with a hunting party that had a permit to camp which included two walled tents and a portapotty. The camp site was well onto the property in the middle of a golden rod field right in deer central. I truly feel bad for any hunter showing up after having scouted the area only to find 18 hunters as part of a church group camping there. I wonder how others feel about this topic. This is southern tier location of 1200 acres.

Having seen so much of this in the ADK, I didn't realize that it happened down here too. Personally, I'm not a fan, but I guess if you know that it's possible then the onus is on you to figure it out before the hunt. And at the end of the day, it's first come, first served on public land, even minus the camping aspect.

We call it a circus for a reason...tents and all. Sorry, couldn't resist. Aim small, miss small.

I used to Hunt Letchworth.  Running into people on state land is part of hunting state land.  Just because they are camping and hunting there doesn't give them the right to push anyone out of an area because they are camping there.

I would love to know what your trail camera AP data is showing during November. From anecdotal experience of being in the woods in daytime hours during November, full moon means bucks up late chasing and cruising, bed at dawn and don’t get up until 10-10:30 for a quick cruise and back to bed until dusk. New moon means harder to see at night so the theoretical pattern might be inactivity at night with more daytime movement.

seems to me that full moon equals decreased buck activity according to my  data. However the moon phase following the full up to new moon seem great for big buck movement

We spent the last 5 days of bow and opening weekend of gun at camp. First half of the week was met with the cold and snow which really slowed down deer movement. It was a great week of making lifetime memories with my daughter and a great friend. We ended the week with my buddy taking a good 8 point on opening morning and my daughter getting an awesome bear on Sunday morning. The bear measured 5'6" and a dressed weight of 270#. My daughter also took a mature buck with a broken main beam the week before at our property at home.
