Bought my X-4 Just before last fall LOC and fished both weeks. Then went out on Cayuga a couple of times and fished the Spring LOC with the same set of battaries in the probe!

There is a new Electronic system that attaches directly to your line so it can be used without a downrigger. It is called the Acoustic Lure Tracking system...it works great and it tells you depth and temperature of the lure by sending a signal through the water to a receiver on the boat.

I have an 840 fish hawk can I just buy an x4 probe to replace the old probe without doing anything else?

Bought the x4 as an upgrade and LOVE it. A year ago I would have said to buy something else. This is the best upgrade to any product I have ever used, it is that good. Just attach on the cable and use like old unit. Always reads, no lost signal in 20+ trips so far.

Another vote for the X4 -- here is why

Tonight I was setting lines and dropping the probe and I noticed the counter on the rigger stopped working. NOT a problem with the Fish Hawk. I put the probe on the other corner rigger and had rock solid readings all night.

This is a reason why it is better than a coated cable unit. Port ability. If I loose a probe, I can just borrow one from a neighbor capt. and I am still going while my replacement is shipped.

Just better.
