Handheld vhf

agreed. used for for a few years. worked fine for talking to the guys in my immediate area, but outside of that, forget it.

Depends on what your intended use is... If you're looking to talk to people and monitor things like chatter/weather a handheld isn't the best choice. If you're looking for something as a safety precaution then a handheld is suitable and much better than not having anything.

I have a handheld as a back-up in case something happens to the main hardwired radio. True, range isn't as good as the main radio, but it does work.

i had an antenna go bad on a 8' antenna that i couldn't talk to another boat about 2 miles away. buut i was still able to contact the cc on  it. a hand held might be ok for a backup but i wouldn't want it as my main radio.
