Vhf radio

Recommended Posts

I've always had excellent success with Standard Horizon VHF radios. I also have a handheld radio as a backup should the fixed-mount fail. As with any communication device, your antenna is the heart of the entire system. Make sure you have a quality antenna, as well. VHF is "line of sight", so the higher the antenna, the better range you will have.

If you're diving into VHF radios, I’ve had pretty good experiences with Icom radios. They’re reliable and user-friendly, which is a huge plus if you’re new to this. Whether you're using them for boating, hiking, or just staying connected, I've found their performance solid. They have an excellent range of models to fit different needs and budgets. They're worth checking out because of their durability and ease of use. If you’re looking for something dependable, I recommend icom radio.

I have an ICOM radio in my boat but it has built in GPS and recorded it at boatus. but any of the newer radios should serve your purpose. but spend the money you save on a good antenna. the radio is only as good as the antenna you use. I use the Shakespeare 5225 which is a great antenna.

DO NOT DEPEND ON ANY HANDHELD TO SAVE YOUR LIFE. AT BEST THEY ARE ONLY GOOD FOR TALKING AROUND THE MARINA, BUT NOT WORTH CRAP OUT ON THE BIG LAKE.

P.S. Hook your radio through your GPS or do what I did and get one with built in GPS and register it then in an emergency you just hit the button and the Coast Guard knows everything about your boat and you need help and where you are located.
