  1. I have been using the premium synthetic in my four stroke Mercury 90 hp
  2. It is likely that you have a seal issue. In another couple days, the oil and water will further separate. These motors should have the props pulled to see if there is fishing line that damaged the outer seal. Also they need to be pressure tested to make sure that you don't have bad gaskets on the two screws and to define that there is a seal issue. Significant water would have gushed when the bottom screw was pulled, if the boat has been sitting for a while since it was last used.
  3. That is correct, water constantly is in the well in any type of wave- that was the area which upon investigation found there was a problem. You can always drill a small hole or two on the inside, enough to get the aluminum clear and see what you have. If it is bad it will be very brittle and look and feel like a waffle material.
  4. I have a 1986 Sea Nymph 19, I had the transom replaced three years ago because it needed it quite badly. The problem with the Sea Nymph is it is not easy to inspect the wood in the transom because there is no easy access to it. Knocking on it, particularly on the inner side of the transom was one way I determined there was a problem which was confirmed by taking off the old motor(I was switching motors at the time) and inspecting one of the bolt holes. My boat prior to my ownership also spent several years out in the weather. A boat stored inside most of the time is going to delay the weathering/aging process. Send me a PM is you want any further information. Mark
  5. This report was out earlier this week, whatever day it was Cabela's stock price jumped.
  6. I believe that toward the end of the run(mid 90's) the GLS and other Sea Nymphs got the aluminum floor. The last years of the Sylvan which was the 2300, I don't know about(2003 was last year) The other years had wood floor. Crestliner was either 2003 or 2004. Islander was recent, thinking 2010 or 2011.
  7. Saw him last Saturday in Niagara Falls. He was ill in 2002 and his voice has never recovered, still he is a legend and he will be celebrating turning 77 next week. He was also up in Whitefish Falls, Wisconsin on Tuesday to meet with family members of the Fitzgerald crew.

kicker was never needed on my boat, had the same 3.0 liter-actually had to bump it up a little most of the time, unless you wanted walleye slow.

Had a 1990 like this boat, towed it with a V6 GMC Sonoma(S10) easily.
  10. As deep in the water as possible so you avoid coming out of the water and spinning air on every wave. You do not have to have it even with the transom because the kicker is not going to put the boat on plane.
  11. Power plants in Dunkirk and Tonawanda closing as well. The one in Somerset has been struggling the past few years.
  12. In the mid 90's the OMC and Mercury Marine bought up a bunch of boat companies. Stratos had originally started out by making bass boats and once the company was bought there was a mixing across boat lines, so I think the bigger Stratos boats were made by some other company with a Stratos label. Do your research on line, to see if there are any issues out there, having a survey done is a good idea to check out the stringers and transom etc. $5500 seems like a very fair price.
  13. My guess is the boat has spent most of its time in the pole barn shown in the pictures behind it.
  14. You are going to find in the used marketplace aluminum boats in the 17-19 ft range. You will likely want what they call a fish and ski type boat which is open bow, with a full windshield and a high convertible top. Most of these will be outboards. Some of the names you will see are Lund, StarCraft, Sylvan, Smokercraft, Sea Nymph, Lowe, Princecraft, Mirro-Craft, Tracker, Polar-Kraft and of course Crestliner.

  16. There will be others on here who will see this post, including one who had a Thompson. A 25 year old Thompson, unless it was stored most of the time inside is going to have rot issues. From the sounds it, you seem to be describing an issue with the side bolster and then some floor/transom issues. The side bolster(wood covered by vinyl) is simply replacing that piece. The floor issues and transom are of more concern because there could be issues with the stringers which are underneath the floor and support the boat and floor. This is a major job and major expense. Should it be extensive damage, you need to evaluate all your options before moving forward. There is a marine product which was made by Glov-it-west marine has it to stop rot in its tracks but it sounds like you issue is more extensive then what that product can solve. Like I stated, others will respond who have gone through this issue in detail.
  17. Thanks for the post, I will be there for a couple days starting Friday.
  18. No increase in years, there are some tournaments in Eastern Lake Erie now that are 500.00 for 4 guys for 3 days. The marketplace decided twenty plus years ago when ESLO went down, if there is an issue this time the same thing will happen which I doubt simply because participation is a fraction of what it was twenty plus years ago. Capitalism still works and let the marketplace decide. Any yes I have owned and run a small business in the past and work for one now.
  19. Out there today-nothing and several of the boats including charters had few fish. Wind blew from Tuesday to Friday this week-scattered fish. There was a lake chop out there today.
  20. One of the largest boat brokers in WNY, been in business since 1972 and moves over 100 used boats a year repeatedly says fall is a good time to attract the educated buyer who is looking for a specific boat be it brand, condition, equipment etc. I believe there is a window between now and October 1st to attract that buyer. You set your price and see where it goes. I have been around boats and fishing for decades, several years ago I purchased a boat in September simply because it was the right boat at the right time. I concur that certainly there are far more buyers(and lookers) in the spring.
  21. I cannot think of one 25 footer that is an I/O with no motor box. It would have to be a very high sided boat. You will likely end up looking at outboards or outboards on a bracket. Bumping to 27 ft, the older Sea Ray Amberjacks did not have a doghouse, but they are also not W/A.
