My Daiwa 47 family of reels is getting tired - 40+ years for some is amazing. What do you use  / buy that has similar quality? Not looking for line counters, I have some Saltist 57's for wire, couple Okumas for leadcore, don't see the Okumas at same quality point although they have worked well - just keep an eye out for loose screws.

Any ways, Daiwa, Shimano or Okuma?

Thanks,

Bob

Ford versus Chevy question, I'm guessing.

We run mostly Saltist reels, with the exception of a couple Tekota for heavier coppers. No complaints. I also know guys who really like the Coldwater with the upgraded drags. There's a variety of good options in that $100-200 sweet spot.

I have been a strict Okuma guy for almost 20 tears. THe only compliment I will give is to the Saltist. I think its a great reel and it gets a nod but that's where it stops for me. I think Okuma has you covered on every application from small early season brown trout reels all the way to a 800 copper reel. The Convector series is bulletproof and just a heads up both the Convector and the Cold Water series have had redesigns in the past 2 seasons. IMO looks were improved and some mechanical items were upgraded but more importantly the drags are now great out of the box.

Heres a list of what im using

big coppers= Solterra SLX

coppers and cores= Convector high speed 30 and 45 series

bigger coppers= 55 series standard retrieve not High speed

riggers =Coldwater CW-30DHA

divers= Coldwater CW-30DHA

i have become a big fan of diawa even my spinning reels these days

i started off with some that my father gave me so they also ended up getting 30 plus years of use.  With that kind of history  i have confidence in the quality and have been slowly trading them out for newer reels.  the Saltists are great i also have both a seagate and a sealine for longer weighted lines

so far i am happy with them.  they may not have as many different price point offerings as okuma in the lower end range but if your buying for long term use its a good product.

Daiwa Saltist for me.  Smoothest drag on the market, drag adjustment is amazing. dependable and the gear ratio is awesome.

Thank you for getting back to me. I will keep my eyes open for deals on Daiwa & Okuma - I still feel better about Daiwa!

Happy New Year everybody

Daiwa Sealines have been bulletproof for me for many years. I'm still running the newer sglc3b reels with no problems in 3 years. But the last time I gave in and replaced the real old lca reels, so I switched to the Okuma Coldwater reels, and I love them. After 2 years, they are smoother than many reels I've used, and the drags are great so far, but I haven't used them long enough to know if they are dependable or not.
