White Backed Spoons

Recommended Posts

White backed Northport and Southport Nailers , Dr Hooks ,Flutterchucks were mainstays way back when Lake Ontario was nutrient rich and cloudy. You couldn't see your cannon ball down 10feet . When the Silver plated NK's first came out we had trouble trying to make them work . Black and purple , chartruse , dark greens with white backs were go to baits in the then cloudy water . Things sure have changed in the past 35 plus years..

Put a single hook on one and put it near the bottom this spring while trolling for browns.  If you peel out deeper for lakers put 'em down on riggers......again with a single hook so you can troll them at slower speeds.  In the summer you can put one on every rigger with cheaters for a good brown spread.

Nobody is making them anymore so don't get rid of them.  If you want to expand your arsenal contact Dave at R&R tackle and have him paint up his Mag Superlites in black face with his pearl on the cup......awesome spoon.

I guess salmon are salmon, but I'm always amazed at the parallels between Lake O and Lake Michigan fishing. I guess the water clarity issues between the two have been the same over the years also.

But same here, white backs were popular back when clarity was less and still have their place today. The old Spook pattern with white back and black belly with glow ladderback was killer. Still use it in August harbor patrol fishing the mud on August staging Kings. Got a few patterns I customized with glow tape backs in the past but the new glow paints are better.

On a side note some "banana" spoons with flo. Yellow backs and contrasing black/green bellies have their moment in the mud.

And also some Dalmation spoons with pearl backs/bellies have their times in off colored water for spring Browns and also Lakers farther out.

Pretty speed tolerant, but they shine where other spoons fail at slow speeds 1.8 mph downspeed.

Just an FYI

All painted lures made by Great Lakes Lure co. are painted white cup with a glow option. They can be ordered with a silver cup, but standard versions are allways painted white. Regarding the "slow" speed lures, we make lures that are intended to be flutter or "slow trolling" lures, 2.0 or less. The #35 and #44 are slow troll lures as well as the Silver Soldier. Those lures also can be formed in a different die to make them troll faster than 2.0 giving the buyer options to choose from depending on your fishing preference.

White cupped spooks, mulatto  and froggy down deep or low llight

Gold, copper and glow cups also work.

keep a roll of white electical tape  on board and you can tape the inside cup of any pattern as needed
