What kind of fish is this

Recommended Posts

It isn't a Common Shiner as the body shape isn't right (shiner wider and almost hump shaped back and the fins are orangish.

As far as the Spot Tail Shiner have a look at this pic and note the spot https://nas.er.usgs.gov/queries/factsheet.aspx?SpeciesID=596

I heard back from my client who is a Maine guide. This is what he said.

Hi Glen,
Ģlad to hear from you.

From the photo,, my thought
is that it's Dace Shiner, sometimes called a Black Nose Dace.
If you look at the fish that are listed in that lake, you'll see thar there are "killi" fish and that is not a killi. However ,
they don't list the Dace, which is not uncommon.
I didn't bother to look at the fish listed for Tunk Lake, only separated by a stream. I actually didn't know that Tunk dumped into that pond. I have fished Tunk many years ago for salmon.
Looking forward to fishing.
Take care.
Bob

Cause if its not a shiner I don't want it in with the shiners and it needs to be a different price.

That's not a blacknose dace.This link shows one blacknose-dace-ee-nydec.jpg

If.you want an ID take it to your local DEC regional headquarters and get an ID from a biologist. Identification of minnows from a picture is difficult at best even if you take a good picture and know the characteristics.

Maybe this is what you are getting at Goldfresh and you want to be responsible, but If you don't know what it is, DO NOT sell it.  Below are the allowable baits for purchase in NY.  Collection, transport and sale (and use) of an unidentified bait from Maine sounds risky and may.be illegal.

From the regs guide...

Greenlist

Golden shiner • Emerald shiner • Common shiner • Spottail shiner • Banded killifsh • Fathead minnow • Bluntnose minnow • Eastern silvery minnow • Northern redbelly dace • Stonecat • Tadpole madtom Blacknose dace • Longnose dace • White sucker • Northern hogsucker • Creek chub • Fallfsh • Logperch • Margined madtom • Brindled madtom

Thats a drawing of a Black Nose Dace. Here is a photo of an Eastern Black Nose Dace. And their appearance varies quite a bit.

Possibly an Eastern Silvery Minnow (Hybognthus regis)

This one had me stumped for awhile so I reached out and “the B-man” suggested Eastern Silvery. This was a new species to me, but appears we have it in LO and it can get confused with spottails  or other species. Based on the pics I’ve looked at seems to fit. Below are some of the more interesting sites I looked at about ESM.
