I catch alewives in Lake Ontario with what I like to call an "umbrella net". While trolling we often go through a school of bait. When there is too much bait in the water the target fish often just laze around and take a nibble out of the school but they don't bother chasing a lure. I sometimes circle right back through the bait school with my umbrella net at the proper depth and usually it produces a dozen of baitfish within a minute. Then I use them on the edge of the bait schools. As for keeping them alive, I use 5 gallon buckets with a max of 6 mooneyes per bucket. I add ice and put a lid on to keep it dark inside. The cold and dark stops them from being panicky and hurting themselves. Even so,you have to keep changing the water so they don't poison themselves.

So with all this talk about stocking trout in my lake, is the DEC also planning to put some ciscos back in the water?

I would disagree with the idea that there is not enough shallow weedbed area on the west side. There are long narrow stretches along the west side and the south end is one big solid weedbed. That said, I much prefer trout fishing to walleye log hauling. The inlet can be a great flyfishing spot. just think of where the two streams join in Moravia with all the currents ,holes, riffs and eddies. I fished it 30 years ago with my son who was 2 years old at the time and although he does not really remember this, he always wants to go for walks in the heron rookery or along the stream as it goes up into the hills. It will be interesting to see how the competition between the lakers and the other trout will take shape.

Not exactly shore fishing, but I did a lot of near shore fishing from just south of Camp Cory to about 300 yards north of the camp. Trolling over about 16 to 25 feet of water and even shallower. Basicly the outer edge of the weed beds, using live bait. That is where you can find out how big the pike in Keuka lake are. I have caught at least a dozen of 38 inch plus pike in that area mostly in November and December while everybody else was chasing deer. It works best when there is a good southern wind that causes enough wave action for the the light to break up under water. I usually allowed myselt to be pushed northward by the wind while correcting my depth control with a small outboard.

rolmops replied to waller's topic in Ontario, CA Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (North Shore)
This was posted in the north shore room so it can be presumed that these were caught in Canadian waters. I do not know if the season is closed on the Canadian side . I just looked it up. On the Canadian side the season is closed from October first until December 31 -
Most good tackle stores can change tip guides. You can also order them online. Replacement is mostly heating up the tip, removing the current guide, adding some glue and installing the other tip guide. I often change tips between wireline (monel 50 pound) carboloid tips and deep sea cod fishing with 80 pound test dacron for which I use a roller tip.

Is mase or pepper spray legal to carry in New York?
rolmops replied to fishless's topic in Big / Small Game
This summer I spent a weekend in New York and I was very worried and wary. That worry turned out to be needless. We were walking around the city at 10.30 in the evening and everybody was out in the streets socializing and being friendly. At first I was afraid to ask for directions, that too was needless. People were helpful, chatting with cops and having a good time in general. I felt safe in down town New York unlike down town Rochester which is still a shooting gallery after dark. -
Fishing trip with my Dad, need local advice!
rolmops replied to SBFD112's topic in Open Lake Discussion
There is a place in Olcott about a 100 yard walk from the marina where you can stay.Olcot has very nice amenities and probably the best fishing in all of lake Ontario in May. Can somebody come up with the name of those cottages on West Main street? -
Whenever I go fishing Keuka,I use the Penn Yan launch. It has a lot of parking space and at least 4 boats, maybe 5 boats can launch at the same time. The river is deep and the trip to the open lake is only about 5 minutes. The run at 28 mph down to the bottom of the Y is about 25 minutes, but there is great laker fishing in front of the church at the college in 90 feet of water. Launching is free. And last,I get nostalgic when I go past the old Penn Yan boat factory yards.

rolmops replied to Little Crappie's topic in Boats for Sale
Adnan, your question was taken seriously, but these are questions that the Canadian customs service can answer. Most of us in the US do not know much about Canadian Customs regulations. It was the other questioner asking if Little Crappie would take $3000 who was answered by asking if he is serious. ( The last time I met an Adnan Farooq was in Lebanon) -
I guess the operators were eavesdropping on some hot conversation and forgot to fly the thing

Your receipt proves that you have a license, so if you are asked to produce your license, the receipt will do fine. This very exceptional and it may have to do with delays caused by the government shut down

Whether it is a year or a day old. There is no reason to laugh at someone else's hard luck. Instead of standing at the side, it would be more of a good thing to tell the launcher about this problem. It also shows poor design of the ramp when there is no bumper just before the end of the ramp

You can use it all winter, just drain the block and manifold when you get out of the water. You cannot take it out on the water and then shut if off while running your kicker, because the water in the block may freeze. If you have a heat exchanger you can run the engine with anti-freeze in the block but you will have to drain the raw water side of the exchanger when you are done. You must trim the lower unit all the way down when draining. If you keep it up water may freeze in the lower exhaust housing which will crack the lower unit. Tell us if you catch a salmon in January!

Meat rigs/cutbait:What's your take? (Discussion)
rolmops replied to Sk8man's topic in Tackle and Techniques
My all time favorite is live sawbelly with a small hook in the mouth into the upper jaw and a second hook(treble) not in the body but just behind the tail with a small rubber band just in front of the tail to keep the line in place. I troll it like a lure usually about 15 to 20 foot behind the ball and use the same setup for leadcore and troll/jigging (moving at troll speed and jigging at the same time using copper or malin stainless). Live bait can be trolled at almost any speed and it sends out wounded fish smell which a regular lure does not. With this setup I do the most succesful fishing. So how to get sawbellies in Lake Ontario? It is what most bait schools are made of just lower a line with a bunch of small hooks and drag it through a bait school. You'll end up with more sawbellies than you know what to do with. Besides, fresh ones do not fall apart. I find trolling/ jigging the most effective way to fish and also the most tiresome. It must be done with copper or stainless because you need weight and no stretch. I learned this way of fishing in Cape Cod Bay going after stripers. Next year I will try to do it with 5 ounce bucktails at 2/3 mph . 300 feet of stainless/malin will get you 40 foot down. This is supposed to mimick squid movement in a current. I tried it while going after lakers in Keuka and it is deadly -
Sure you can,but not from the same place. First you have to replace your or reattach your bellows ( I would go with replacing). Next you must take off your lower unit and take it apart to see whether the gears have rust on them and to replace the seals specially around the prop. When that is all done put the lower unit back on and use new fiberglass washers when you screw the ol plug screws back in. If that is above your DIY level,I would suggest you get in touch with a marine mechanic. Good luck.

It seems that a bunch of years ago there was a storage cave for LPG under Seneca Lake near Ithica that was closed. Now they want open another one in an abandonded salt mine 2 miles north of Watkins Glen and use it to store LPG,but as everybody knows, fracking in NY may be just around the corner. Fracking causes minor earthquakes which is not good when you store gas in a cave. Another reason for the protest is that it is very easy to store LNG instead of LPG and this would be nice for storing fracked gas. That makes it a target for the anti fracking crowd. In a nutshell: The people who stand to make money of it are pro and the people who live there and will see no financial benefits but bear the risk of accidents are anti.
