I am seriously thinking about getting some big oars .

I fish out of my 12 ftr all the time and I row that . So why not ?

My father’s last boat burned between 120 and 200 gallons of diesel per hour while on plane.
We were frequently fishing 100 miles or more offshore for days. I remember logging over 700 nautical miles in a weekend tournament.
Full send for what we do on Lake O. Gas prices are the least of our worries.
That being said if I was a charter boat I might be spending more time taking a look inside.

Two colors:  Black is the run to the fishing ground and direction, blue is a troll path for salmon. Most guys end their troll with a "scoot" back to port or weigh-in, based on 60+ yrs of observation... But each to his own...

Other suggestions to save some gas:

1. Keep your hull clean.  Don't let slime build up on it.
2. Consider Gel or wax the bottom of your boat more frequently. (lower unit & prop?)
3. Consider using tilt/trim for speed control rather than RPM.
4. Reduce excess fishing gear.  If you have 2 riggers, why carry 5 weights?
5. Store gear in back and/or to the sides rather than in the bow. (Balance, don't plow)
6. Consider a season launch pass rather than paying for individual launches.(veteran's, senior, local or disability discounts?) Consider state launch pass.

To those who like higher prices..."Enjoy them!".  I simply offer some suggestions as to how to save a little money and a subject for others to complain about.

So we will probably spend about $1.50 more per gallon. Say we burn 20 gallons per trip ( which is way more than I burn) That would be an extra $30, which is the equivalent of a cheap lunch for two after fishing. If you bring sandwiches, instead of eating out , you break even.

Life is short.  Go fishing AND go to lunch afterwords!  Time with friends and family is worth it.  An extra $30 is nothing compared to a trip to the tackle shop.

Not only is life short, you never know how short. So go do what you love to do now, because you may not have the time to wait till later. And Gator, please do not bend over, it is unsightly.

For sure.  My nephew is a prime example.

Moving my boat to Olcott is saving me about $700 for the year.

Skipping places like Mc D s could make your life longer so you can fish longer.  What's the out of pocket expense for a heart attack? Screw the gas . Yeah I agree life is short we all are going to die .

Fine, I'll take one for the team......

#1 I'll quit my M-F job

#2 You guys sell your boats

#3 Book me for 1-2 days (or more) a year. Trust me this is much cheaper than owning a boat!

On second thought, if I did this every day I think I'd hate it. In my opinion these gas prices are temporary. I get screwed at the Oak with $5.50-6.50 gas every year. I can't imagine what this years price will be. Luckily for me clients pay my fuel bill. That being said one way to offset costs is to add another body in the boat. Introduce someone to our passion with the full understanding they are required to split fuel expenses. You might pick up a long term fishing buddy.

In my opinion these gas prices are going to continue to escalate until demand drops appreciably. Then they will just level out. Its going to years to repair the damage done and until then crude is going to be in short supply

Takes days for prices to increase, months for them to fall......
