Sandy Creek - Hamlin Launch is a Sh#hole

What a disgrace the Sandy Creek launch in Hamlin is. Are we 2nd class citizens? The docks are partially COLLAPSED and under water. You literally have to walk through 8 inches of slime, algae, and slippery crap to get to the dry part. Where is the DEC or Town of Hamlin? Its been like that for awhile. Yes I know the water is high but why no temporary planks or something so you dont have to walk through slippery algae to get to the dock. Somebody is going to slip and crack their head open. Its only a matter of time. The whole launch just SUCKS from having to walk a half mile to get to your car and then back, to the concrete structures in the water on the ramp that are easy to hit with your trailer, to having only 2 ramps with a million people using them. I just dont understand why NY cant make a nice ramp and mini harbor (like Sturgeon Pt on Erie) for us to use at Hamlin Beach. There's plenty of room. Well I'm one boater that wont be tying up that ramp any more, Im outta there. Its total BS what lake access we have on the west side. I think everybody who uses that ramp should pick up the phone and call the DEC. Floating docks could be an option too. These pics were from 7/13/26.

It’s slated to be revamped.  You are lucky it’s even open.  Last time it flooded, it was closed until the water was above the docks. They aren’t going to put money into it when it’s going to get totally revamped soon.

I use it to launch & load  for my cottage . I really don't like the walk , but that's how it goes . Same with Oak Orchard on Arcibald road . Also have to walk at Wilson and Niagara  . 

 

With the guys that use it a lot and some probably work construction  with those long pallets and cement blocks laying around , I'm surprised someone hasn't gotten the ambition to be a little proactive and do something about it . Heck , I see those things on the site and considered doing it myself . But if someone  got hurt and they found it was me who did that , they might call 8 .I  watch people all the time wading , loading people In the boat to launch and load . 

 

Once again , proves Gov sometimes can't solve the simplest of problems.The town , who I think is in charge of it , probably has what they need to solve it laying around . 

 

Some of that 8 billion Kathy sent down to bail out NYC sure could come in handy . But she has her priorities , don't you know .

Bald Eagle six miles to the west is awesome. That is where you should go next time.

Maybe the town of Hamlin chooses to spend its money on things that every resident needs more than investing in a ramp that in spite of it being less than great is still functional and maybe you should consider buying a pair of boots and concentrate on having a nice day instead of concentrate on things that are really not so important.

Absolutely. When it’s an unsafe situation which it is, they should shut it down. 
I may be wrong but I think it’s a state launch not a Hamlin launch. Hamlin is probably responsible for cutting grass.

Why should I pay for something I'm already paying for with my tax dollars ? There are a lot of bass fisherman that use that launch and fish the creek  also . 

 

Is expecting it to be maintained and usable to much to ask ? 

 

I mean  a few hrs with a crew we already pay and a few hundred in materials is really all that's needed . 

 

Again , some of that 8 billion would go a long way up here . But come on , nobody really cares about your frivolous playtimes upstate . 

 

Question 

Now if I qualify , will the state supply me with a pair of boots ?

I just double checked some things. As it turns out, the Sandy Creek Launch is owned and operated by the DEC and it is on Park land.

The launch is fine. I'm way more concerned about stepping on a hook that a "fisherman" left on the dock with 100 ft of 80 lb braid, than I am about slipping on a slimy board. If you're worried about splitting your skull in a fall, wear a helmet.....

Is it really too much to ask the state the dec or whoever runs the damn place to make it safe how come  no one's calling their representative maybe the federal representative . Joe Morelli would love to get a feather in his cap before midterm.

Given the liability issues , that is what may happen, but most people just want to launch or fish and the risk factor that is caused by having to walk six  feet through 4 inch deep water really is not very different from walking over wet wood after it has rained.

Hard to know if people are too cheap to pay$10, or don’t like trying new places, or think another 6 miles is too far. 
To also get to drop just west of the nose is a plus too. Half the launchers at Sandy burn more in gas getting there to fish than if they drove and paid. Can lead a horse to water but………..

I slipped my boat at Bald Eagle late 80s for 5 years when Oshman owned it . Many times I got pushed down on a west wind and current down to or past the pump house and had to fight my way back . Also the structure east of the nose to Wautoma and farther east is far superior to the nose west . I've been both places and prefer Sandy all around . 

 

All that being said and not mattering a whole lot , my point is as taxpayers we invested a lot of money into that launch .Why is it not being maintained to be safely used ? Once again Gov at it's best . 

And yup , if I launched , I would gladly Don the pair of boots and save the 10 spot unapologetically. Hey , that's a new Carbon 14 .

Since my first boat 1978 and when I trailered I considered the Oak my home port . I slipped at Bald Eagle 5 years . Then at my brother's for 6 at Johnson's .  Now I'm at my cottage at Sandy I think 10 years . So I fished all those areas extensively . 

 

Time of year matters for best port for kings . Spring , the farther west the better so Johnson's hands down and it was good all summer  . After let's say Memorial day and to when lake transitions and the kings disperse thought the lake from the west end , really any midlake port can be good . 

 

After 1 st week in Aug the kings start moving to their spawning streams and with the no king pens at Sandy and the Canadian natural reprodution taking over Sandy is not the best port . 

 

I find that the inshore, 70 to 150, king bite can be very good at Sandy. I find there are always at least some kings on or just off the structure . And when its not and you have to go offshore , I call that 200 +  any of the midlake ports , Olcott to Roch . Are  good. 

 

Sandy to me this time of year is best all around. Short run to the nose or Watoma. If you are a small boat guy and don't want to venture offshore there is great brown and lakera available . Of the ports I was at  , for me Bald Eagle is the last choice. 

 

And if you drive a long way and get blown off , there are bass and pike in the creek.  

 

If you are coming from Roch , to launch at Bald Eagle ,it's  another 8 miles both ways . And if you go 10 times during the year , That's 100 bucks launch  , a new fishing rod !

Congrats for having a place on Sandy Creek I'm sure you worked hard for it how'd you like to be one of the guys that parked at Sandy State launch come back from a trip out find your windshield wipers ripped off your mirror smashed and sugar all around your fill of your gas tank that hundred bucks you spent at bald eagle it's probably well worth it
