9r got in at 0600 settled in , at 6:30 passed a 3 year old 6 and with it a really nice 8 broke tine , not shooting a deer on my first sit unless it's really nice, it was a perfect start to my morning then a half hr later this stud appeared same track as others 20 yards under me . Let it fly when he gave me the opportunity I felt my shot was liver not knowing in the heat of the moment that he was cornering more away the shot was perfect.. I gave him almost two hours got out and started on good blood followed him twords camp lost blood all this time thinking liver back ,,, so I backed out not knowing he was 20 feet from me dead.... call the dogs in just to be safe . It was a short 200 yard track for Arial the blood hound . Thank to Gator for dropping walleye on his plate and helping me get him out... great day to be alive .

October 2 PM

70 Degrees

NE wind 10-15 becoming calm

sunny skies

High Pressure 30+

Sat out the AM hunt due to the fact that SE winds work for none of the sets I need to be in. However, unfortunately for me, one of my target bucks walked past my stand at 738 am yesterday morning. The wind was supposed to switch from SE to NE for the PM so I made the move to hunt that stand yesterday afternoon and boy was I rewarded. All in all yesterday was quite slow until about 6pm. Then the flood gates opened. Cameras were firing and deer were on their feet. I kept a close eye on my right assuming that if I was going to get a shot opportunity it would come from my right (bedding). Cameras have been showing me this pattern for almost a week with multiple shooters crossing just past my stand during the daylight. From west to east in the AM and east to west in the PM. On opening morning I was one step away from closing the deal however I never had an opportunity of a broadside shot present itself. At approx 620 I put eyes on one of my targets. He was on a string and I knew where he was headed. I patiently waited for him walk past me and stopped him with a mouth grunt once he was in my shooting lane. The rest is history. I hit him maybe 3 rib back quartering away. I saw blood pouring out of him 20 yards later and figured he wasnt going far. I never saw him drop but I figured he was just inside the wood line. I snuck out after dark to give him time. Tommy joined me on my search and we returned 3 hours after the shot to find him piled up just before the hedgerow. Game over! What a week!!!

Really good podcast on deer patterns of movement summer range vs winter range and why it might not be a good idea to shoot those older matriarchal does

Ya mine!!!

lol a buddy of mine down there has the same issue. He’s hoping to hook up with some Amish/Menonites that would be interested in whole bear if he happens to shoot one.

Thank God for squirrels and chipmunks keeping me entertained this evening. Only deer I saw was a back shot while riding to where I drop off the quad.

Anyway it was great just to be out.

Well my kid scored on his second buck ever with a bow this past week.

He saw this buck earlier in the week so we made a plan for him to go after it. We went through pictures and figured we had him patterned pretty good. He was a regular visitor on cam. We had a good idea on where he was bedded and we knew he was looking to fill his belly with acorns.  So we hung his saddle to intercept him a little closer to where he was going from the field and into the woods. That cold front settled in on Wednesday and he shot him at less than 10 yards on his first afternoon sit. Wide 2.5 year old.

Well since that cold front rolled in last week deer have been moving x2. Cams had been getting a little boring up to that point but deer activity has certainly increased dramatically. Lots of new bucks showing up also. Definitely witnessing the transition of summer patterns to fall patterns. I made myself a laundry list of things to do to prepare for gun season. I have one stand to hang, one to move, move a couple of cameras around, etc.
