Seneca Lake - Crypto Mining Ban

Recommended Posts

Fellow Fisherman,

I just read that there is a bill in front of the NY Senate to ban crypto mining in NYS.  Given the impact it has had on Seneca Lake I expected that this community might be interested in supporting this action.

If you want to support this bill you can go onto the NY Senate website and send a message to the Senator for your district to ask them to vote yes for the bill.  On the right hand side of the webpage you can click on a button that says Aye, once you do that you will be prompted to setup an account.  I believe you have to confirm your account via email and then login in and take the steps again for your vote to go through.  Below is the link for bill S.6486D.

it is done on large server farms. In the case of seneca they bought an old power plant and refurbed and restarted it that power is than used fully for an onsite server farm that does the bit coin mining.  The concern is that the power plant discharges warm water into the outlet near the mouth.

It does create a handful of local jobs to keep the plant running and does provide some property tax base for the county but the warm water is a form of polution.  its a natrual gas plant and they did refurbish it to be very efficent and clean but there are still CO2 emissions.

this is not as cut and dry of an issue as it might seem on the surface.  There is both positive and negative associated with it.   the discharge is by the mouth so it would not affect most of the spawning area depending on the species but the warm water could prevent fish from entering the stream in the first place.  the list of Pros and Cons gets considerably longer on this.  It is worthwhile to research on this one and form your opinion it could be an idicator of the overal direction of the state with regards to outdoor activities vs comercial activities.

If they want to operate then they must drop the water temperature that is discharged back to a normal level

Yes. She signed 6486, but remember, it is only a moratorium, not a ban.

Before too long we will find out what the stronger force is, big money or the citizens will.

I suspect that we will not hear from this bill for a long time and when we have almost forgotten we will find out that it has been attached to another bill and passed in the middle of the night when nobody was looking..

I'm wondering if the heated water being discharged into the Keuka Outlet on Seneca will discourage the lampreys from making a run to spawn---just trying to find some silver lining here.  I was swimming at the outlet last September and it was like bath water!

The best fishing in Seneca was back in the days where the power plant was running at near capacity, which is twice what they are releasing currently....And what is the environmental impact of all the vineyards along Seneca lake when compared to the warm water discharge of grennidge?

Hey there! Mining cryptocurrency and being eco-friendly is definitely a concern for many of us. One way to approach it is by opting for energy-efficient mining hardware, such as ASICs, which consume less power compared to traditional GPUs.

The news about the crypto mining ban around Seneca Lake is definitely interesting. It feels like the conversation about energy use and environmental impact is really heating up. I had a friend who started mining a while back and ran into similar issues with local regulations. It’s a tricky balance between innovation and sustainability.

When he switched to using more efficient methods and looked into renewable energy, things improved a bit. For trading and managing crypto, he found https://stealthex.io to be a smooth option. It’s great to see more platforms popping up that cater to different needs.
